Academics Academics

Reading & Language Arts

In Reading, we will finish Module 3, which is focused on qualities needed to rise to the occasion, with a focus on the genre of historical fiction. We will also start Module 4 where students will listen to, read, and view a variety of texts that present them with examples of what makes someone a hero. Our genre focus will be on fairy tales and myths. This will provide students with opportunities to identify text and graphic features, point of view, and themes in order to better understand unfamiliar texts. Students will also encounter narrative nonfiction to build knowledge across genres.

In Language Arts, we will write responses with relevant details that demonstrate understanding of texts in short and long constructed responses, including comparing and contrasting ideas across a variety of sources. For grammar, we will learn about compound & complex sentences and pronoun contractions.

Math

In Math, the month of November will be dedicated to Fractions. Student will explore adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. To master this skill, they will build on their knowledge of decomposing fractions as sums of unit fractions from third grade. In this Take-home letter from STEMScopes, you will find some examples and various ways to support your student at home.

Science

In Science, students will finish Chapter 4 by investigating how energy travels, conductors & insultaors. Students will be given the opportunity to create circuits to understand how energy travels and test how conductors and insulators work . We will begin Chapter 5 by learning about Patterns of Friction which is a motion force the opposes the motion of objects . Then we will review what we have learned so far (chapters 1-5) to prepare for the District Assessment that will take place on November 18th.

Social Studies

In Social Studies, we will finish reading about the inhabiting of Texas before moving on to "Mexican Texas: A New Era". During this chapter, we will learn about the Mexican-American War, including empresarios and new settlers. In chapter 5, "Revolution and the Republic of Texas", we will dig into the conflict that led to the Texas Revolution and The Battle of the Alamo.
