Greetings Gearity Families:

I would like to thank everyone who was able to join us for the Heights Homecoming Parade! The students and families had great energy and represented our school well. The parade is a good reminder that we are a part of a much bigger Tiger Nation and it is always nice to see former students participating in middle and high school programs.

PTA needs your help: The PTA is planning a bake sale fundraiser on election day (Nov. 3rd) as Gearity hosts a polling station. We are requesting donations for the bake sale and the proceeds go back to your family through PTA programming. We sent home a flyer with a QR code to sign up to donate. If you did not get the flyer in your student's back pack you can use this link. If you would like to join the PTA, you can use this givebacks link to pay the small membership fee. Our next meeting is scheduled for October 27th.

Picture Day photos are now Available: To see if your child's pictures are available to view, please log in to your account at mylifetouch.com. If you don’t have an account yet, you can create one using your email address. To locate your child's photos, you'll need their Student ID or Portrait ID and Access Code. Student IDs should be listed in Infinite Campus. If you don't have this information, you can:

  • Check your inbox for an email from Lifetouch that may contain your access credentials and a direct link to your child's images.
  • Wait for your proof sheet to arrive, which will include your Portrait ID and Access Code.
  • Contact the Lifetouch Help Center for assistance

Please note that pictures may not become available for all students at the same time, so check back later if you don't see your child's images yet. Retakes are November 2nd.

Dentists are coming: The Smiles Program will be at Gearity on November 24th. If you would like to have your students participate in the program you can register using this link: https://www.myschooldentist.com/GPCHOH_schsrm

Parent Teacher Conferences: We will have Parent Teacher Conferences from 1-7 pm on October 22nd and from 8:15 - 11:30 on October 23rd. Teachers will reach out to their families to schedule meeting times. Students will not come to school either day as teachers will be completing quarter 1 grades or participating in professional development sessions when not meeting with parents. You can schedule a teacher conference at any time in the year by reaching out to your student's teachers. We want to partner with out families to support each student in mastering grade level standards and look forward to collaborating on your child's success.

Have a great weekend,

Mr. Mc Nichols

What did my child learn at school this week?

Dear Families,

Here is a snapshot of what students are learning across grade levels, along with simple ways you can support learning at home.

Kindergarten

Reading: Students are learning to ask and answer questions about informational texts and identify important details. They are practicing early literacy skills through phonics and shared reading.

Writing: Students are practicing writing sentences to share their ideas.

Math: Students are developing number sense, counting skills, and an understanding of how numbers relate to one another.

At-home learning tips:

  • Read an informational book together and ask, “What did you learn?” and “What details help us understand the topic?”

  • Encourage your child to write a sentence about a favorite activity or family experience.

  • Practice counting everyday objects, recognizing numbers, and comparing groups of items.

First Grade

Reading: Students are identifying characters, describing their actions, and explaining how events connect in a story. Phonics instruction continues to strengthen reading and word recognition.

Writing: Students are writing personal narratives about events in their lives, including details that help tell the story.

Math: Students are solving addition and subtraction problems and exploring strategies to make sense of numbers and equations.

At-home learning tips:

  • After reading, ask, “Who are the characters?” and “What happened in the beginning, middle, and end?”

  • Invite your child to write or draw about a memorable day and tell you about the events in order.

  • Practice addition and subtraction using toys, snacks, or household objects.

Second Grade

Reading: Students are strengthening comprehension by asking and answering questions, identifying the main idea and supporting details, and examining how stories and informational texts are organized.

Writing: Students are writing informational pieces that explain a topic using facts and details.

Math: Students are building place-value understanding and learning to represent, read, and compare numbers.

At-home learning tips:

  • Read together and ask your child to identify the main idea and two supporting details.

  • Have your child explain a familiar topic, such as how to care for a pet, using facts and complete sentences.

  • Practice identifying the value of digits in two- and three-digit numbers.

Third Grade

Reading: Students are exploring informational texts by examining text features, understanding an author's point of view, and explaining how authors support their ideas with reasons and evidence.

Writing: Students are developing realistic stories with believable characters, settings, and events.

Math: Students are strengthening their understanding of multiplication and division and using patterns and properties to solve problems.

At-home learning tips:

  • Look at headings, captions, and diagrams in a nonfiction book. Discuss how these features help readers.

  • Encourage your child to write a realistic story with a beginning, middle, and end.

  • Practice multiplication facts and solve everyday problems involving equal groups.

Fourth Grade

Reading: Students are using evidence from informational texts to explain the main idea, understand an author's purpose, and evaluate reasons and evidence.

Writing: Students are developing opinion essays that include a clear point of view, supporting reasons, and evidence.

Math: Students are working with multi-digit numbers, place value, and strategies for solving addition, subtraction, and multiplication problems.

At-home learning tips:

  • Read a news article or nonfiction passage and ask, “What is the main idea?” and “What evidence supports it?”

  • Ask your child to write an opinion paragraph about a favorite book, activity, or school topic, including reasons to support the opinion.

  • Practice multi-digit calculations using prices, grocery totals, or number puzzles.

Fifth Grade

Reading: Students are analyzing informational texts, identifying an author's point of view, and explaining how authors use reasons and evidence to support their ideas.

Writing: Students are writing opinion essays with a clear claim, logical reasons, and relevant evidence.

Math: Students are working with numerical expressions, patterns, and fractions, including understanding and comparing fractional quantities.

At-home learning tips:

  • Discuss an informational article and ask your child to explain the author's perspective and supporting evidence.

  • Choose a family-friendly topic and have your child write an opinion with a claim, supporting reasons, and examples.

  • Practice fraction concepts by measuring ingredients, sharing food equally, or comparing fractional amounts.
