Principal Update
Dear Y.E.S Families:
Here we go! It’s time to kick off another great semester at York Elementary School. This month will be filled with lots of learning, and some testing to see growth and progress! When it comes to our MAP Growth assessments, students will set goals based on Fall testing. Students and teachers will talk about strategies to help them reach their goals, but families can also help students make great progress! Ensuring that your child comes to school each day, child and/or families are reading every night, and explaining that you want the child to do their best each day have shown to have a positive impact on student learning. We always appreciate your partnership in your child’s education!
Speaking of the importance of school, attendance is crucial for students. When students are at school every day, children feel better about school -- and themselves! It can be hard to come to school when it is cold, so as a family, ensure that you are setting great habits. Get into a regular bedtime routine, and do things that can help the mornings go smoothly. Set out clothes for the next day, lay out necessary coats, hats, gloves, and pack your child’s backpack. If your child seems unsure about school, please reach out to your child’s teacher. We can make a plan to help boost your child’s self-esteem about school and work together to help them make great progress.
Project Update:
Progress is moving right along for the Y.E.S Addition and Renovation. In the future preschool area, the brick facade and roofing work continues. The slab-on-grade work is almost complete, and walls will begin to go up soon! The kindergarten area’s focus continues to be steel decking and MEP rough-ins.
It has been fun to watch progress on this project-- it has been moving quickly and is all very exciting! We have had very minimal interruptions in the school building this year. We anticipate a few interruptions later this spring, but we will communicate any impact to students.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out. We appreciate your partnership as we get ready to make it another great semester at Y.E.S!

Help Support York Adopt a Pet with YES Student Ambassadors!
The YES Student Ambassadors are excited to support a community partner this month and have chosen York Adopt a Pet. To help care for their animals, the Student Ambassadors are collecting Dog and Cat Treats.
If you would like to donate, please send any items to YES by Friday, January 16. Your generosity will go a long way in supporting both our students’ leadership efforts and a wonderful local organization.
Thank you for helping make a positive impact in our community!

Character Strong
In January, This month is all about Perseverance. One way to think about Perseverance is “pushing yourself through challenges and obstacles.” We all experience challenges in our lives. We all have moments when we feel like we can’t do it or that we want to give up on a big task. It is important to develop tools that help us work through those challenges in order to grow in those moments instead of giving up. How might you practice Perseverance as a family this month?
Science Fair
The Science Fair will be coming up in March. Be on the lookout for information to come home! Please mark your calendars for March 10th if your students have any interest in getting involved!
News From The Nurse
New Year’s resolutions can be for kids too! Resolutions can be a fun way to bring about a positive healthy change in your child’s life. Visit with your child about resolutions. Brainstorm different ideas with them. Help your child pick out a healthy, reasonable resolution. Set them up for success by offering encouragement, guidance, and reminders along the way. A couple resolution ideas are listed below:
- ·Get at least 10 to 11 hours of sleep each night.
· Establish a bedtime routine. Keep their sleep schedule consistent throughout the week. Turn off electronics at least 60 minutes before bed. Avoid caffeine and sugary drinks the second half of the day.
- Eat at least 5 servings of fruit and vegetables daily.
· Make fruit and vegetables more appealing and accessible for your child. Offer fruit and vegetables at every meal and as a snack. Look up new recipes on how to incorporate them into your main dish. Visit myplate.gov for more information.
- Brush teeth twice a day.
· Set at time so the child brushes for at least 2 minutes. Monitor brushing habits now and then to make sure the child is effectively brushing by covering all tooth surfaces and brushing long enough.
- Drink enough water.
· Amount of water your child should drink depends on age, gender, and amount of physical activity. Offer water first instead of sports drinks, sugary options or caffeinated beverages.
- Get at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily.
· The Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee recommends, “children and adolescents (6–17 years of age) engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, including vigorous-intensity as well as muscle- and bone-strengthening activities, at least 3 days per week.”
