"Say Something" Week "Say Something" Week

This week our school’s SAVE Club is promoting Say Something Week. This is a national effort to encourage students to recognize warning signs of violence or self-harm and to “say something” to a trusted adult. Each morning there will be a special announcement. At lunch on Friday, students will have the opportunity to write a thank note to one of their trusted adults. Students will also be able to sign a pledge to help create a safer school.

Important Changes to EOG Retesting Important Changes to EOG Retesting

As part of North Carolina’s accountability program, your student will participate in an End-of-Grade (EOG) assessment in two or more of the following subjects this school year: Math, Reading, 8th Grade Science.

If a student does not meet the state proficiency requirement on the initial EOG, Buncombe County Schools will offer a retest opportunity within the last 10 days of school. Retesting allows students another chance to demonstrate their understanding of the test subject. This is a change from previous years becuase retesting can happen before school is out for students!

These retests are an important opportunity for a student to show proficiency in course content. If your student retests, the highest score earned from both attempts will be used for growth and proficiency.

This form indicates whether you give permission in advance for your student to participate in an EOG/RTA retest if they do not meet proficiency on the first attempt (Score a level 3, 4 or 5).

Click here to fill out the google form.....all families and students are asked to complete this quick form. Thanks!

BCS Student Surveys BCS Student Surveys

We care deeply about ensuring that our students can provide input and feedback on how their school year is going. Student surveys are a way for us to hear directly from students about their experiences in school and in their classrooms. The purpose of this letter is to let you know that Buncombe County Schools will be conducting student surveys in your child’s school from March 23 through April 24,

Your child’s responses will be anonymous. Principals and teachers will not have access to any individual responses.

We will be asking your child to take a 10-minute survey to share their feedback on their experiences this year, including their academic supports, school belonging, and trusting relationships.

Students’ responses will provide us with unique insights into the current student experience. Principals and district leaders will receive a report summarizing overall responses from students.

We hope every student will take part in this survey. However, participation in this survey – and each question within it – is optional. Students can skip any question they do not wish to answer, for any reason. If you would like for your student not to participate in the student survey, please send a note to school or email our assistant principal, Dr. Takei, to opt your child out of the survey. Please include your child's full name and your full name. Please notify the school by March 23 if you choose to opt your child out.

If you need additional information or if you would like to view the questions, please contact Dr. Takei. Thank you in advance for allowing us to ask your child for their input!

Girls In Aviation Day Girls In Aviation Day

Earlier in the year we had advertised "Girls In Aviation Day" and several parents expressed interest in their daughter participating in this. It was canceled due to construction at Asheville Airport but is has been rescheduled on Wednesday, April 29, from 10:00 - 1:00 (lunch provided).

At this event, girls will meet a variety of aviation professionals, tour planes, and engage with many other aviation activities which could include playing drone soccer and meeting an airport service dog. Specific activities are in the process of being finalized. This is the first time this event has been held in Appalachia and we are very excited!

The school would provide an activity bus for student travel. This is also during the week of our school's DC trip, so it would need to be 7th grade girls or 8th grade girls not going on the DC trip. Please email Principal Honeycutt if you are interested in your daughter attending.

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 4–8, and our amazing PTO is inviting families to help us celebrate the incredible educators at our school through the “Sponsor a Teacher” initiative.

Families can sign up to sponsor a teacher which will help provide a small treat, meal, or surprise during the week as a way to say thank you for the dedication, care, and energy our teachers pour into students every day. It’s a simple but meaningful way to show appreciation and make our staff feel valued.

If you’d like to participate, click this link.

Let’s work together to make Teacher Appreciation Week extra special for the people who make our school such a wonderful place to learn!
