Whaaaaaatttt?! ππ
Dear Ross Community,
Last week my tiny Roadrunner asked me when it was going to start snowing. I replied, "Pretty soon, probably next month." But what I didn't warn her or know about was the deafening wind storm that was coming in for a late-fall surprise. When my big Roadrunner had his weekly case of the why-do-we-have-to-go-to-school-on-Mondays yesterday morning, I'll admit I looked outside at the dry hurricane and thought, I might be in his boat today. I hope you have marked yourself safe from the fall leaf whipping, and hats off to Ms. Juriga for yelling "THE WIND" as I remarked that I needed to think of my intro topic for this week. Somehow I heard her over the breezy vacuum of the playground, and she nailed it.π
We have a few new items of interest for you this week: updates to Super Saturday's festivities, a new partnership event with Ted's Bulletin, an exciting new Coffee & Content series coming up early next year, and a variety of volunteer opportunities as we start the holiday season. Don't forget the Diaper Drive runs until this Friday, and you have five more days to get in your Ross merchandise order to receive your items before the holidays!

School Events
Save the Dates: Ross Auction
This yearβs annual Ross Auctionβone of our schoolβs key fundraising eventsβwill take place as a silent auction. To make the most of our resources, especially given the current economic climate, we will not hold a gala event this year. Instead, weβre exploring ideas for a community-building happy hour or similar gathering, so stay tuned for details! The silent auction will run from March 28βApril 4, and we canβt wait to share the amazing items and experiences up for bid. A big thank-you to everyone who has already volunteered to help! Weβll be convening the auction committee soon. To make this important fundraising event happen, we need help from LOTS of parents. Many hands make light work! If you have time to send a few procurement emails (template provided) to a list of local businesses, please reach out! We cannot raise the funds that Ross needs without your help! Please contact PTApresident@rosselementary.org.
Student-Run Diaper Drive: Accepting Contributions Until this Friday, November 21
3rd grade girls who are participating in Girls on the Run, an afterschool running program coached by Ross teachers, will soon launch a service project to collect diapers, toiletries and other necessities to donate to the Greater DC Diaper Bank. The Greater DC Diaper Bank is the largest diaper bank in the area, and it provides essential baby and hygiene products and expanded access to critical services for families who need them the most.
Here's where you can help: From November 10-21, you can donate any of the listed items in the Ross lobby. The Greater DC Diaper Bank accepts both opened and unopened packs of diapers. Have a few random diapers lying around? Here's your opportunity to make sure they go to good use. Other items include wipes, baby food, bottles, shampoo/conditioner, toothbrushes/toothpaste, lotion, deodorant and much more.
Ross Staff Gratitude Breakfast: Friday, November 21
To show our teachers and staff gratitude during the month of Thanksgiving, the PTA is organizing a Teacher & Staff Breakfast Buffet on the morning of Friday, November 21. The PTA will order acai bowls and avocado toast, as well as coffee. But we also need your help! Please sign up here to contribute a delicious treat -- homemade is great, but store-bought is fine, too! We could also use a little help with set up and clean up and you can sign up at that link. All food items must be dropped off the morning of Friday, November 21 by 8:00am in the staff kitchen/lounge. For food donations, assume you're feeding 12, make sure the food is nut-free, and label whether a food item is vegan or gluten free. Questions? Feel free to reach out to PTApresident@rosselementary.org.
Story of Our Schools Volunteer Event: Sunday, December 14, 10 am to 3 pm
Ross students are on a year-long research quest to uncover Rossβs history, through a partnership with The Story of Our Schools. The students (particularly 4th graders), led by Ms. Juriga, are conducting archival research and oral history interviews, as well as participating in walking tours and field trips. At the end of the school year, their findings will be transformed into a permanent, museum-quality exhibit that will be installed in our school (slated for fall 2026).
Ross is responsible for raising approximately $30,000 to help finance this effort. The Ross PTA is asking community members, organizations and businesses to contribute toward this $30,000 goal. The PTA is matching every dollar raised, up to $15,000.
Similar to our book fundraising drive that the Ross PTA organizes each spring, students (and their parents) will be tabling at the Dupont Little Flea Market (near the farmers' market and as part of the Dupont holiday market) on Sunday, Dec. 14 from 10am-3pm. Students will be talking to community members about Ross and asking them to give small donations in support of the school. This approach is very effective for the book fundraising drive, which typically raises a few thousand dollars in a few hours using this method.
Students and their parents can sign up for an hour-long (or more) shift, meeting in front of Connecticut Wine & Liquors at Connecticut and Q. Look for the Ross table! This is a great opportunity for students to show pride in their school, volunteer, and build their confidence and practice their public speaking skills! Sign up here!
