A letter from the Sultan School District Board President, Gigi Gouldner

Dear Sultan School District Families and Community Members,

We hope this message finds you well. We are writing to inform you that our Superintendent, Dan Chaplik, will be retiring at the end of the 2024-2025 school year. We are grateful for his years of dedicated service to our district.

As we begin the process of selecting a new superintendent, the board is committed to being as transparent as possible. We value your input and invite all parents, guardians, and community members.

On behalf of the Sultan School Board,

Gigi Gouldner

Sultan School District Board President

Counseling Corner Counseling Corner

Seattle Children’s is happy to announce the opening Sept. 30 of a new Psychiatric Urgent Care Clinic, the first pediatric-focused psychiatric urgent care in Washington state. We hope you will share this information with your teams.

What: Same-day in-person and virtual (video) visits providing mental and behavioral health crisis assessment, initial treatment recommendations and referral to follow-up resources in the community. Care is provided by our experienced team of licensed mental health therapists, family advocates/case managers, psychiatric advanced practice providers (APPs) and medical assistants.

Who: Designed for youth ages 4 through 17 who are experiencing a mental health crisis and need same-day intervention but do not need the services of an emergency department (ED). We care for all Washington youth ages 4 through 17, including children and teens with autism and intellectual and developmental disabilities.

When: Beginning Monday, Sept. 30, 2024. Open daily from noon to 8 p.m.; closed on major holidays.

Where: We see youth in person at Seattle Children’s Magnuson, located at 6901 Sand Point Way NE in Seattle, and through video visits from anywhere in Washington state. We recommend scheduling a same-day in-person appointment online or getting in the virtual line for a video visit. We have very limited capacity to see walk-ins and cannot guarantee walk-in access.

Please encourage families who live outside the Seattle area to use the virtual/video option. They must be physically in Washington state during the video visit.

How: Before scheduling a visit, learn whether to go to Psychiatric Urgent Care or an ED. A referral is not required.

  • For in-person visits, schedule a same-day appointment online. (Scheduling opens at 12:01 am daily.)
  • For video visits from anywhere in Washington state, get in the virtual line to be seen. (The first spots in virtual line open at 11:30 am daily.)
  • Please note that spots in the virtual line will open up throughout the clinic day, please encourage youth and families to regularly check back for availability.
  • Please note we have very limited capacity to see walk-ins and cannot guarantee walk-in access. Please encourage patients/families to schedule an in-person appointment online or get in the virtual line to be seen for a video visit.

Why: This new service – the first of its kind in the Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho region – is part of Seattle Children’s ongoing commitment to building out the continuum of care to ensure children and teens receive the right level of care at the right time. Psychiatric Urgent Care is intended to connect children and teens in Washington state to faster crisis assessment and follow-up resources in the community.

Please note that patients seen in the Psychiatric Urgent Care Clinic will not access other outpatient psychiatry services at Seattle Children’s faster than those referred through the normal process.

Sultan High School is a WAGAP school! What does this mean? The Washington Guaranteed Admissions Program (WAGAP) lets you learn if you’ll be admitted to Central Washington University, Eastern Washington University, The Evergreen State College, University of Washington Tacoma, Washington State University or Western Washington University before you even apply! We partner with your high school to make sure the following criteria are met:

· You have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher

· You have completed or are on track to complete by fall 2025 all the College Academic Distribution Requirements (CADRs)

· Your school has an agreement with the participating universities and college to be part of the program

If all of these are true, we can guarantee you will be admitted to all six participating Washington four-year, public institutions.

Applications for Sno-Isle and RAP (Regional Apprenticeship Program) open on November 7, 2024! Sophomores and juniors who are interested in taking one of these programs next year should apply promptly. Both programs take attendance and graduation progress into consideration as a requirement for acceptance.

ASVAB sign-up’s are now open and free for everyone. Seats are limited, so don’t delay! Why take the ASVAB? Some students take it for Career Exploration, others to meet a graduation pathway if they didn’t pass the SBAC. If you are not sure what you want to study or get training for after high school, this is the test for you! The ASVAB is also required if you are interested in joining the military. To sign up, fill out the form on our website or use this link ASVAB SIGN UP LINK

Monitoring Grades Monitoring Grades

Helping your student by monitoring their grades is very effective. Grades can change overnight. It is important that students do not get so far behind that they want to give up.

How to Login to Canvas

All Sultan School District students have a Canvas account. The best way to login is through ClassLink with the same username/password the student uses to login to computers as school.

There is also a Canvas Student App for both Android and iOS. Select "Sultan School District" when prompted to select a school. Username is the students full email address, including @sultanstudents.org and same password as ClassLink.

To protect student privacy and district security, we ask that you call our hotline if you need information on your student's username and password at (360) 793-9891

How to get a Parent Observer Account

Having a Parent Observer Account is the best way to get insight into your student's classrooms. With an account, you can view course material, review student work, view grade feedback and communicate with teachers through the messaging tool.

Ready to get started? You need a Student Pairing Code. To get a pairing code, ask your teacher or call your school office.

Once you have the pairing code, review the instructions as needed:

Academic Supports Academic Supports

Homework Club:

Tues/ Thurs Homework Club (2:40 – 4:45) * is an optional opportunity for students who need extra support or time to either stay caught up on classwork/ homework or who need to catch up after being gone. These are students who want to work and are motivated to improve their grades for either sports or other reasons. Homework Club is encouraged, but is a choice, not a requirement.

If a student is being disruptive at Homework Club they can be asked not to return, as it is only for students who will use it appropriately.

Friday School:

Friday School (ERF Fridays 1:00 -3:15)* will be a required opportunity for students who are failing classes due to not completing classwork. Part of building relationships means caring about our students enough to hold them accountable for their choices and providing consequences when they are not meeting expectations. With this goal in mind, we are implementing the required opportunity of Friday School for students who choose not to complete work or need additional help.

Friday school is assigned by teachers. You will hear from the teacher by Wednesday, if they have Friday School. If your student completes the work, the teacher can sign off and your student will not need to attend Friday school.

The goal of Friday School:

  • Improved academic performance by students not meeting expectations.

  • Increased student sense of responsibility for academic success.

  • Improved use of classroom time.

  • Increased communication between school and parents.

Friday School is from 1:10 pm to 3:30 pm on Early Release Fridays.

*Activity buses are available to transport students home afterward.

Only the parent/guardian of a student assigned to Friday School may request a “reschedule” to the next available Friday. Should the student not attend their assigned Friday School for a reason other than an illness, the student will be assigned additional consequences:

  • First Missed Friday School: Re-assign Friday School and 2 days of lunch detention.

  • Second Missed Friday School: Parent meeting, 3 days of lunch detention, and re-assign Friday School.

  • Third Missed Friday School: Parent Meeting, 5 days of lunch detention, and re-assign Friday School.

Please contact the office at #360 793-9860 and ask Laura Breen or Micki Miller if you have any further questions.
