Looking Back, Moving Forward: What to Leave Behind and What to Carry with You

The end of the school year gives us time to reflect on and refine our practices.
Here are my suggestions for what to leave behind in 2024–25 and what to embrace in the 2025–26 school year.

✅ Practices to Continue

Develop Relationships
Take time to be intentional about building relationships with students, families, and your community. When we cultivate strong connections, we gain valuable educational partners. Never let your first contact with someone be when there’s a problem to solve.

Reflect and Celebrate Your Progress
You are doing amazing work, I promise. Keep a folder to collect all those positive notes, student drawings, and words of gratitude. It will remind you of your daily impact and offer perspective and encouragement on difficult days. Twenty-three years later, I still have mine.

Well-being and Resilience
When we prioritize our well-being as whole educators, we model resilience and self-regulation. Working from a regulated state positively impacts classroom culture, which can lead to higher student achievement and improved student well-being. An investment in your own well-being is truly an investment in your students.

❌ Practices to Leave Behind

Perfectionism
Education is messy work. You don’t need every lesson to be flawless or every classroom detail perfect. Students don’t need perfect teachers; they need teachers who model imperfection and continue to show up each day and do their best.

Comparing Yourself to Other Educators
Comparison is the thief of joy. No educator has all the answers. Instead, appreciate the gifts, talents, and strengths you bring to your classroom. Healthy self-reflection is always helpful, but unhealthy comparison can lead to burnout.

Working in Isolation
Don’t go it alone! Seek out like-minded colleagues who can remind you of what’s going well. Building a strong network of peers at various stages in their careers allows us to collaborate, gain perspective, and share in meaningful learning experiences.

Thank you for another year of service to our students, families, and community. You are appreciated!

Cheers,

Jillian

Article: Using a Homework Audit to Evaluate the Quality of Your Assignments

A simple yet effective way to address this issue is through a homework audit—a structured process that helps teachers evaluate the quality and impact of their assignments. It offers insight into how long tasks actually take students and reveals hidden barriers like gaps in skills, unclear instructions, or missing prior knowledge.

Article: How Letting Go of Perfectionism Made Me a Better Teacher

I used to believe that great teaching meant having everything under control. My lessons had to be airtight, my grading meticulous, and my students’ success—or failure—felt like a direct reflection of my competence. I wanted them to feel confident, take risks, and embrace challenges, but I wasn’t modeling any of that myself. Instead, I was unintentionally teaching them to fear mistakes, to prioritize performance over learning, and to believe that struggle meant failure.
