HTPS EXCELLENCE SPOTLIGHT

MESSAGE FROM MR. TOOMEY - SUPERINTENDENT
As we find ourselves just days away from Thanksgiving, it’s the perfect moment to reflect on the many reasons we have to be grateful here in Hanover Township Public Schools. Each day, our district is filled with examples of kindness, learning, dedication, and connection—reminders of what makes this community so special.
I am deeply grateful for our students, whose curiosity, energy, and enthusiasm brighten our schools. To our incredible teachers and staff, thank you for the meaningful work you do each day to support, encourage, and guide our learners. A special thank-you goes to our elementary teachers for the time, care, and commitment they put into Fall Conferences. Their investment in each child’s growth and success is inspiring. Research consistently shows that a strong home—school partnership is a key factor in student achievement, and we are thankful for the collaboration and trust of our families.
Our gratitude also extends to our administrators for their steady leadership; to our PTAs for their dedication and countless contributions; and to our Board of Education for their ongoing support and investment in our district.
Together, we truly are "A Community That Inspires Excellence," and our students benefit every day from the collective effort and partnership of so many.
As we head into the holiday, I wish you and your families a joyful, restful, and gratitude-filled Thanksgiving!
BEE MEADOW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Halloween Activities
Ms. Maloney’s and Mrs. Healy’s classes teamed up for a fun scavenger hunt searching for “ghosts in disguise.” Additionally, Mrs. Healy’s class explored the inside of a pumpkin during a hands-on science activity, and got into the Halloween spirit as they prepared for the school’s festive parade.
Barclays
Bee Meadow School was once again excited to welcome members from Barclays for an engaging, hands-on day of robotics and coding activities for our 4th and 5th grade students. Students dove into robot exploration with robot cars and experimented with microbits. A big “thank you” to Barclays for continuing to be a part of the Bee Meadow community outreach program. Our students look forward to their visit every year!
More Halloween!
The school celebrated Halloween with a lively parade, festive classroom parties, and plenty of costume fun. Students and staff marched around the BMS loop showing off imaginative outfits and enjoying a day full of laughter, community, and holiday spirit. Thank you to the staff for their participation this year dressing as donuts!
Día de Muertos
Students in Mrs. Cobane’s 2nd-grade class created vibrant paper marigolds during World Language with Sra. Gibbs as part of their celebration of Día de Muertos. Through this hands-on activity, students learned about the cultural significance of marigolds, cempasúchil, and their important role in honoring loved ones during this traditional Mexican holiday.
Monster Stories!
Fourth graders shared their original monster stories with one another just in time for Halloween. Using flashlights to illuminate their narratives, students created a spooky, fun atmosphere as they read their imaginative tales to friends.
Student Council Elections
The Student Council held its elections using electronic voting, and the results are in! Congratulations to our new officers on their newly elected positions. We look forward to ideas they have to share as well as those of all of our elected classroom representatives.
The Science of Water
Students investigated the properties of water by pipetting droplets onto a variety of materials. They recorded their observations closely and drew thoughtful conclusions about how water behaves on different surfaces.
MOUNTVIEW ROAD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Halloween Fun All Month @ MTV!!!
Mountview Road School had a blast celebrating Halloween all month long! From the MTV PTA Trunk or Treat and Pumpkin Decorating Contest to the Student Council’s Guess the Pumpkin Weight and our fabulous parade, the excitement never stopped. We’re grateful for all the support and the costumes were absolutely fantastic. It was a truly spooktacular month at MTV!

Fifth Grade Events
Our fifth graders have been busy giving back! Students partnered with the town to help clean up Malapardis Park after Masquerade at Malapardis, and they rolled up their sleeves again to run the Bake Sale during conferences. We’re so proud of the way they are applying the skills of citizenship while raising money for their end-of-year events. A huge thank-you to all the parent volunteers who organized and supported these meaningful opportunities!
Red Ribbon Week
Our school celebrated Red Ribbon Week with a fun-filled week and a half of spirit days including jersey day, wear-red day, crazy hair, superhero day, and pajama day! Students showed their school spirit while learning the importance of making healthy choices for their minds and bodies. Way to go, MTV!
Dino Man Assembly
K-5 students had an unforgettable time at our Dino Man assembly! They learned how we know dinosaurs existed, what fossils are, and how they form—all while meeting inflatable life-sized dinosaurs, magical surprises, and even a mischievous raccoon sidekick. The kids were captivated from start to finish. A huge thank-you to the MTV PTA for bringing this dino-mite experience to Mountview!
Whole Kids Garden Grant
Our courtyard garden was buzzing with activity as students teamed up with Mrs. Pratola to prepare the space for winter. Thanks to a generous grant from Whole Foods, our young gardeners helped remove old plants and learned valuable lessons about caring for a garden—and the many things it teaches us about growth, responsibility, and teamwork. We can’t wait to see what blooms in the spring!
Rotary Dictionaries
Our third graders were all smiles as they received their very own personal dictionaries from the Hanover Chapter of the Rotary Club! Students immediately dove into exploring new words, fun facts, and even a handy multiplication table. This thoughtful gift will serve as a valuable resource for years to come. We are truly grateful for the generosity and citizenship demonstrated by our Rotary volunteers.
SALEM DRIVE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Student Council Elections
Our Student Council elections for Grades 3-5 were a huge success! Students showed incredible leadership, responsibility, and school spirit throughout the process. We’re proud of every candidate for their courage and dedication.
A big thank you to our amazing Student Council advisors, Mrs. Carey and Mrs. Gavin, and to Mr. Cashen for setting up the electronic voting system. Thank you as well to our amazing PTA and parent volunteers for creating a memorable, authentic polling experience by creating the physical voting booths and decorating the polling location.
We’re excited to see our student leaders grow and make a positive impact this year!
Halloween at Salem Drive was a recipe for FUN!
Our staff cooked up an amazing Chef & Cooking theme this year, and it was a total hit! From creative costumes to joyful laughs, the day was filled with unforgettable moments and schoolwide spirit. A huge shout-out to all of our incredible staff for bringing the theme to life. Also, kudos to our students who made the day truly special with their energy and excitement.
A special thank you to the Whippany Park High School “Kids Helping Kids” Club for joining us and helping make the festivities even more amazing. Lastly, thank you to our “Care Bears” PTA for the signs used during the parade. As always, it is a team effort! What a memorable Halloween at Salem Drive School!
Kindergarten & 5th Grade Buddies in Action!
Our Kindergarten and 5th graders teamed up for a fun Thanksgiving activity. We’re so proud of our 5th graders for being caring role models and helping make the day special for their kindergarten friends!
Kindergarten Field Trip
Our Kindergarteners had an amazing day at Alstede Farms! Students picked their very own pumpkins, explored the farm, and made wonderful memories together. It was the perfect fall adventure filled with fun, smiles, and excitement!
PTA Book Fair
Students were thrilled to explore, discover new books, and spark their love of reading. A big thank-you to our PTA and parent volunteers for setting up the books, the cozy camping area, and the fun photo booth. Their hard work made the day a great success!
Caught Being TRRFCC!
These students pictured were Caught Being TRRFCC! Each day, we remind students of the importance of the Six Pillars of Character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. We teach them that it’s important to practice these everywhere they go. Kind acts are contagious and help make our school a special and caring place. We’ll continue recognizing students throughout the year for their positive actions!
MEMORIAL JUNIOR SCHOOL
Boo Bash and Fun Night
Back in October, the Student Council’s Boo Bash and Fun Night gave our middle school students an exciting evening packed with Halloween fun. Students showcased their creativity in a spirited costume contest with prizes, danced enthusiastically to music from our DJ, enjoyed a variety of games in the gym, and shared snacks with friends. The event was a lively, memorable celebration that highlighted school spirit and provided a safe, engaging opportunity for students to come together and create lasting memories.
Treats for Troops Program
This year, Memorial Junior School conducted its 21st annual Halloween candy collection to support our military men and women serving overseas. Thanks to generous donations from students, families, teachers, and the community, we were able to fill 17 boxes with candy and cover shipping costs. Students also created heartfelt greeting, encouragement, and thank-you cards to accompany the treats. The “Treats for Troops” boxes are expected to arrive around Thanksgiving, bringing a sweet and meaningful reminder of our appreciation to those serving abroad.
Ellie Leaves a Lasting Impact at MJS
We wish Ellie well as she embarks on the next phase of her training. November 10 marked her final day at Memorial Junior School before returning to The Seeing Eye Foundation to continue her journey toward becoming a Seeing Eye dog, providing independence and companionship to someone who is blind. We are grateful to everyone who helped Ellie grow, learn, and feel comfortable working with people during her time at MJS. Her presence made a meaningful impact, and we are proud to have been part of her story!
MJS and WPHS Partnership Makes Beautiful Music
Whippany Park High School visited MJS on Tuesday, November 11, to perform in an assembly for our 8th-grade students, which included a special appearance by Mr. Toomey. The following day, all MJS band students took part in the annual Pride and Passion Concert at WPHS. The event brought together over 200 talented musicians, showcasing the skill and dedication of our students while highlighting the strength of our music programs.
MJS and Ms. Dolch Honored with Program Excellence Award
We are proud to share that Memorial Junior School has received the prestigious Program Excellence Award, recognizing the innovation, dedication, and high-quality learning experiences of our Technology program under Ms. Dolch’s leadership. The award was presented at the New Jersey Technology & Engineering Educators Association conference at Bell Works in Holmdel, NJ, and was graciously accepted by Ms. Dolch, Mr. Anderson, and Superintendent Mr. Toomey.
PACT Students Participate in Mock Trials
Ms. Tracy’s PACT classes have been deeply engaged in studying Mock Trials this year, developing their own witness testimonies, direct examinations, and cross examinations before performing full trials in class. As part of the experience, staff members volunteered to serve as jurors, providing students with a realistic courtroom setting. The activity strengthened students’ critical thinking, collaboration, and persuasive communication skills, and their preparation and professionalism were impressive to watch. Each class will also be writing and submitting a case to the NJ State Bar Foundation’s Mock Trial competition, extending their learning beyond the classroom.
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING
This month, we are proud to highlight the meaningful progress taking place across Grades 3-5 as we continue rolling out our new literacy program—one of our district goals for the 2025-2026 school year. Teachers have been deeply engaged in professional learning as they explore new materials, refine instructional practices, and work together to elevate literacy experiences for our students.
A major contributor to this progress has been the support and investment of our principals, who have prioritized literacy, coordinated schedules, and ensured that teachers have protected time and resources for collaboration and growth. Their leadership has been essential in helping this initiative take root across all three upper elementary schools.
We also want to recognize the strong leadership of our Director of Curriculum & Instruction, Mr. Wasserman, who has guided the implementation with clarity, consistency, and a focus on instructional excellence. His partnership with principals, teachers, and our literacy consultant has created a cohesive, well-supported rollout across the district.
Our literacy consultant, Cindy Healy, has also provided invaluable support by modeling lessons, assisting with small-group instruction, meeting with teachers during planning and release periods, and collaborating closely with school and district leaders.
Most importantly, the impact on students has been noticeable. Classrooms are filled with purposeful reading time, rich discussions, and more “eyes on text” than ever before. Students are reading, thinking, and engaging with texts in meaningful ways that reflect our district’s commitment to high-quality literacy instruction.
We are grateful for our teachers’ dedication, our principals’ leadership, Mr. Wasserman’s guidance, and the collaborative spirit across HTPS as we work toward achieving this important district goal and strengthening literacy for all learners.
STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS UPDATE
Earlier this month, our Strategic Planning Core Team held its first meeting—and it set a powerful tone for the work ahead. The session was filled with deep discussions, meaningful dialogue, and opportunities to “dream big” about the future of our schools and the opportunities we want to create for our students.
If you would like to stay informed throughout the process, you can visit our Strategic Planning page on the District's website. We will post updates after each monthly meeting so the community can follow our progress.
Together, we look forward to shaping a bold and thoughtful roadmap for the next five years of HTPS!
EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION TESTING
With winter approaching and the increased likelihood of weather-related schedule changes, we want to ensure everyone is receiving emergency notifications. To help us check, the district will conduct a test of the system on Monday, December 1 @ 5PM.
In the event of a school closing, delayed opening, or early dismissal, the SchoolMessenger system through PowerSchool will be activated. All teachers/staff and families will receive a phone call, text message, and email.
If you do not receive the test alert through one or more of these methods, please complete this form so we can ensure your contact information is accurate and up to date.
