School Attendance - Everyday Counts!
Desert Sage Elementary Monthly Attendance Challenge
Deer Valley Unified School District and Desert Sage Elementary are excited to launch our Monthly Attendance Challenge! Regular attendance supports learning and growth, and we want to celebrate students and classes who make every day count.
Each month, the grade level with the highest attendance percentage will receive a grade-level recognition and a surprise reward. Winners are announced at the monthly Gecko Gathering. To help students track their progress, an Everyday Counts attendance banner is displayed in the main hallway, with weekly updates showing attendance numbers and current standings.
Our challenge is designed to encourage students to understand the value of attending school, being on time, and making the most of every learning opportunity. It is not intended for students to attend school when ill.
Let’s work together to make attendance a priority and celebrate the positive impact it has on learning!

Fry's School Rewards: Grocery Shop & Help Desert Sage
The Kroger Family of Companies is committed to community engagement, positive social impact and charitable giving at the national and local levels. Every community is unique, but our common goal is to partner with the neighborhoods we serve and help the people there live healthier lives.
One of the ways in which we do this is through our Fry’s Community Rewards program. This program makes fundraising easy by donating to local organizations based on the shopping you do every day. Once you link your Card to an organization, all you have to do is shop at Fry’s and swipe your Shopper’s Card. Here’s how it works:
1. Create a digital account.
- A digital account is needed to participate in Fry’s Community Rewards. If you already have a digital account, simply link your Shopper’s Card to your account so that all transactions apply toward the organization you choose
2. Link your Card to an organization. Selecting the organization that you wish to support is as simple as updating the Fry’s Community Rewards selection on your digital account.
- Sign in to your digital account.
- Search for your organization here. (Organization: Desert Sage Elementary School, Organization #: WL124)
- Enter the name or NPO number of the organization you wish to support.
- Select the appropriate organization from the list and click “Save”. Your selected organization will also display in the Fry’s Community Rewards section of your account. If you need to review or revisit your organization, you can always do so under your Account details.
3. Your organization earns.
- Any transactions moving forward using the Shopper’s Card number associated with your digital account will be applied to the program, at no added cost to you. Fry’s donates $2 Million annually, paid out quarterly, to participating organizations based on your percentage of spending as it relates to the total spending associated with all participating Fry’s Community Rewards organizations.
Student Early Release - PLC Days
At Desert Sage, we are committed to helping every student succeed. One way we do this is through Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), where teachers meet weekly to review student data and plan lessons and interventions that meet students’ academic and behavioral needs.
During PLCs, teachers work with their grade-level teams, Special Education staff, Reading Specialists (K–3), and Gifted Sage teachers (3–6) to create small intervention groups for students who need extra support. These groups change as students make progress, so instruction is always tailored to their needs. Teachers also develop short quizzes to track student growth and plan lessons that benefit the whole class.
PLCs are a key part of how we ensure each student receives the support and instruction they need to thrive. To learn more about PLCs, visit the DVUSD PLC website.
DVUSD Override: Your Vote Our Future
What's Happening this Month!
This month in preschool, we’re celebrating the people who matter most — our families and our community! Children will learn that every family is special and unique, and we’ll share the many wonderful ways families care for us. We’ll also dive into our community, exploring the important jobs of community helpers like firefighters, doctors, mail carriers, and more. Together, we’ll discover the tools they use and the responsibilities they have to help keep our community safe and strong.
As part of our learning, we’re also practicing how to draw a person, talking about the parts of our bodies and how they help us. It’s a fun way to connect our art, self-awareness, and storytelling skills!
✨ The first month of kindergarten has flown by, and it’s safe to say our students are growing more comfortable and confident each day! We are so proud of the progress being made—not only academically, but socially and emotionally too.
📚 Literacy – This month, students will begin decoding simple words like sat and man as we add new letters each week. They’ll also start writing simple words on “kindergarten lines,” practice phonemic awareness through activities like sound segmenting and rhyming, and explore story elements such as characters, setting, and events during class read-alouds.
➕ Math – Students are building their understanding of “how many” while using different strategies and tools to represent numbers 0–10.
🌎 Social Studies & Science – We’ll be learning about the four seasons (which connects to our weather unit in science) and discussing the importance of rules and laws.
💡 Family Connection – Thank you for your continued support! For fun, at-home activities that reinforce math and ELA skills, check out the newsletters linked on our kindergarten website.
We had a wonderful start to our first month of first grade! Here are the skills that we will be working on this month!
- Reading: We are working through short vowel o sounds. We will also be learning all about text features.
- Writing: We are writing a descriptive essay about what makes our world special.
- Math: Students are learning to use number bonds and subtraction to solve addition problems with an unknown number.
- Science: We are learning that there is a cause and effect between sound waves and vibrating matter.
- Social Studies: Students are learning what voting is, and why it is important.
We are so proud of the progress our first graders are making each day—thank you for being such an important part of their journey!
In math, we are wrapping up our first unit. Students have been working hard learning new strategies for addition and subtraction, while also practicing and strengthening their skills with the standard algorithm. We have moved beyond rounding and comparing numbers, and are preparing to begin our second unit, which will focus on multiplication and division.
In reading, students are beginning Module 2, which examines how both animals and humans rely on their senses to interpret and navigate the world. This module encourages students to think critically about how sensory information influences behavior and decision-making.
Join us on September 12 for the 4th Grade Gecko Gathering! Come support our students as they share their presentation.
🌟 Our 5th graders are off to a great start this September and are eager to dive into new learning!
📚 Reading & Writing – Students are practicing how to compare and contrast characters and use text details to support their thinking. In writing, they are working on both expository and narrative pieces.
➕ Math – Instruction will focus on volume, multiplication, division, decimals, and fractions to strengthen foundational skills.
🌎 Social Studies & Science – In social studies, students are studying the events leading up to the American Revolution, while in science they are exploring chemical reactions, mixtures, and solutions.
🈶 Mandarin – Students are learning the Clothes and Wood radicals, practicing different types of sentences (statements, questions, and exclamations), and being introduced to linking words.
💡 Looking Ahead – September promises to be an exciting month of growth, learning, and discovery!
