A letter from our leader Janice A letter from our leader Janice

Imagine your work space, you look around and then you say to yourself, "How do I start?" You want to enter a quilt into a show. You have an idea and then comes that hesitation. It is a real stumbling block. It's the elephant in the room. You assemble your favorite scissors, you clear off a space on your design wall, you pickup the first fabric and again you hesitate. I don't know if Melinda had those moments, but I watched her as she started her quilt on Alaska. She had the smallest pair of scissors and she was meticulously cutting away at fabric leaving tiny pieces of the fabric behind. There was a moose and an eagle. Knowing her love for Alaska, she explained she was doing her interpretation of the state of Alaska. She was entering a juried exhibit. A juried competition, that's a big hurdle. Again, I don't know if she felt that way or not. The next time I saw her quilt a picture of the state of Alaska had appeared along with an appropriate background. Another big hurdle. I have changed the background fabric numerous times on my works in progress. Time passed. At our BeeArtful meeting in January, Melinda showed her finished piece. It was awesome. It told her story. It told about her love of the state and the magnificent creatures that inhabit it. Well done. By trusting the process and focusing on the "little wins" rather than the final result, Melinda moved forward. The end result and the proof of the method is evident in Melinda's outcome. She recently learned that her Alaska art quilt was selected for the AQS show, '50 States in Stitches'. It will travel to five AQS shows in 2026. Congratulations, Melinda. Your work is amazing. I will remember the ending to the ancient elephant tale the next time I start. One bite at a time...

Keep pedaling,

Janice

Pressing Matters (fused applique, cotton)

Have you noticed the changes in fusible web over the years? The consistency of the glue changes, the paper changes, and companies go out of business. For 20 years or more, I recommended using Pellon Wonder Under #805. This recommendation for a dry glue transferred to fabric with the heat of an iron is in my books and online classes.

But now I have my reservations.

Recently, the glue formula for #805 has changed, as has the paper backing the web. The glue is thicker, and the paper only has silicone on one side.

So I’m recommending Misty Fuse for fusing my fabrics. It’s lightweight and easy to hand-stitch through. There is also a new product called Gentle Fuse that closely resembles the old #805 and Soft Fuse that I loved. Both Misty Fuse and Gentle Fuse are available online, and I’ll be purchasing them from now on.

Another idea for hanging : metal furring strip from Home Depot attached to wall with Command strips - then either magnets in sleeves or as shown magnets on furring strip then metal pole in sleeve.

One is a checklist that can be used as a guideline when looking at a quilt - this is published on her website as part of her creative strength training class.

The second is a detailed essay she wrote concerning the process.

I hope that these documents will help the Bee Artful group conduct critique sessions that are productive.

Letter from the editor Letter from the editor

I am humbled that Janice wanted to use my Alaska tiny quilt for her monthly message. I so enjoyed making that little quilt and am so excited that it got chosen for the traveling show. I hope everyone had a safe and peaceful January without too much interruption from the winter storm. As I write this I know Gini has no power still due to damage in her area. With another storm approaching I hope everyone stays safe and warm. Enjoy your newsletter!

I am happy to convey all of these wonderful "goings on" via this newsletter. Try to get things to me in advance of the end of the month via email (mandmoliver@gmail.com) or text. If you put the word "newsletter" somewhere in the message line I will be able to find it easier (if using email). See you soon.
