Cougar Nation,

We have a short week this week and next. Remember, Comal ISD has an early release on Thursday, February 17th at 2:30pm. Students also do not have school on February 18th and 21st. Enjoy the long weekend.

With tomorrow being Valentine's Day, we ask that no gifts, flowers, or candy are delivered to the high school. Students may bring gifts, flowers, and candy and hand deliver to another student. We do not have the physical space to hold gifts for every student in the office.

As the end of the 9 weeks grading period approaches March 11th, I ask that you take time to check your students grades in Skyward. If a student has a zero in the grade book, most likely, your student has not turned in an assignment. This equates to not not turning in a report at work, not putting rebar in concrete, or not putting a necessary ingredient in a cake. As Canyon High School prepares students for the rest of their life, it is important that students are reminded that they need to do the work and turn it in.

If your student is experiencing COVID symptoms, or has tested positive, please use this Google form found HERE to report: Canyon High School COVID/COVID like Illness Reporting Form

I wanted to remind you of a few things:

  • Our cafeteria doors are open at 7:30 every morning. Students will be sent to class at 8:45.
  • We are asking students to wear their Student ID visibly at all times. This is 100% for security purposes, so we can ensure that every one on campus is supposed to be there.
  • Basic Dress Code: No Hats or Hoods worn in the building. Shirts must cover midriff and straps at least 2 inches wide. Shorts, skirts, and holes in pants must not be above thumb when arm is fully extended towards leg.
  • Parents will NOT be able to drop off food at lunch. Students should either bring their own lunch or can get a free lunch from the cafeteria. Please do not order food and plan to have it delivered to the school. There will be no outside food deliveries from companies such as Uber Eats, Doordash, or Grub Hub.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to reach out to me anytime at dustin.davisson@comalisd.org.

FEB. 2022 STAAR EOC FIELD TESTING for English II (Sophomores)

The purpose of this communication is to notify all parents and students of a stand-alone field test required by TEA in February 2022.

Canyon High School has been selected by TEA to participate in the English II STAAR EOC field test. CHS will be administering the field test on Tuesday, Feb. 15th, 2022.

As previously announced by TEA, several requirements of House Bill 3906, 86th Texas Legislature, 2019, are influencing a redesign of the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) that will be implemented in the 2022–2023 school year. This redesign will include several components—transitioning to online assessments, capping the number of multiple-choice questions, and adding new item types. Although the Texas Education Agency (TEA) has made a concerted effort to minimize the amount of instructional time used for state testing purposes, particularly stand-alone field testing, a stand-alone field test is necessary to properly integrate these new components into future state assessments.

As required by the Texas Education Code, Section 39.035, administering the February 2022 Stand-Alone Field Test is mandatory for campuses selected. Field-test data from a sample of students who are representative of the state are critical to the state’s ability to build high-quality assessments. TEA recognizes the challenges campuses face regarding time and personnel resources when they are selected to participate in mandatory state testing activities. However, the stand-alone field test is a necessary component of the STAAR redesign.

For more information regarding the STAAR redesign, refer to the STAAR Redesign webpage on the TEA website. If you have any questions about the stand-alone field test, please submit them to TEA using the Student Assessment Help Desk.

SchooLinks Guardian Accounts

Parents:

The video below shows parents how the students can provide them their claim code.

https://youtu.be/o8sUdOsvbtA

Your student is now using a new tool called SchooLinks to create a personal graduation plan and navigate the journey of college and career planning. Soon, students will begin to submit their course requests for the 2022-23 Academic Year online through SchooLinks.

While counselors have been meeting with students to discuss courses, your input and approval of their course plan is a critical part of this process. Rather than receiving a paper course selection sheet, as in years past, you now will review and electronically sign your student’s course plan in SchooLinks. But first, you must create a Guardian Account in SchooLinks.

To sign up for SchooLinks, ask your student to send you an invitation via email or text. Use the claim code included in the invite to create the account.

View this video for instructions.

Once you’re in SchooLinks, you can review your student’s 4-year course plan, including a plan for the 2022-23 School Year. Take the opportunity to discuss selections with your student. If there are changes needed, your student can make those changes. Through your Guardian Account, you will be asked to electronically sign your student’s Personal Graduation Plan to approve their course selection for the 2022-2023 School Year. Each year, you and your student will have the opportunity to review, revise and approve their 4-year course plan.

Course selection for high school students (including current eighth grade students moving to high school next year) begins Jan. 24 and must be completed by Feb. 17.

Counselor Corner

Course Selection

Counselors have finished student 1-1 course selection conferences with all current 9th-11th grade students. If your student was absent for their 1-1 conference, we will be having a "clean up" day for absent students. We will have our 1-1 course selection conferences with our 8th graders this week.

February 14 - Church Hill Middle School

February 15 - Clean Up Day for Absent 9th & 11th graders

February 16 - Canyon Middle School

February 17 - Clean Up Day for Absent 10th graders

Parents please use your students SchooLinks claim code to approve their Personal Graduation Plan by this Thursday, February 17.
