The Monthly Howl
VP/Principal Newsletter February/March
Spring is around the corner...
Greetings, Jack London Families,
This week is Parent-Teacher Conference Week for Trimester 2. Students in grades K-6th will be dismissed at 11:35am all week, to allow time for teachers to meet with families regarding their child(ren)'s progress at school. Please reach out to your child's teacher if you have not yet signed up for a conference.
This week is also College and Career Week, with Spirit Days all week.
- Monday – The Future is Bright: wear sunglasses.
- Tuesday – Go for the Goal: wear your favorite sports team apparel.
- Wednesday – College and Career Gear: wear apparel/hat from your favorite college or career.
- Thursday – Envisioning your Future: dress as the career you might want when you grow up!
- Friday – School is Cool: wear Jack London Spirit Wear/school colors of black, white, and teal.
Next week, we have another Spirit Week for Read Across America (see flyer below). We will also be launching the Read-a-Thon, a PTO fundraiser. Information went home to families already via email. This fundraiser will be held the first 2 weeks in March.
English Learner students are currently completing ELPAC testing, to demonstrate their progress in areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening in English. These students will work with Ms. Masadas, Ms. Jasmine, and/or a member of the District EL Testing team to complete these assessments. The results of this assessment are used when students are being considered for "Reclassification" from an "English Learner" to "English Proficient," so it's important that students do their very best on the test!
Looking Ahead: During the month of April, we will begin CAASPP State Testing for students in grades 3rd - 6th. More information will come home closer to the start of this testing. It is important that students come to school every day, rested and on time, so they can shine their brightest on these assessments!

Procedural Reminders from the Jack London Elementary School Handbook:
LATE ITEMS/SNACKS
We understand that sometimes parents/guardians need to drop off items at school for their children, such as lunches or snack. Please leave any late items with the front office staff, and we will communicate with the teacher about getting the items to the student. Our policy is to avoid calling classrooms regarding snacks, lunches, or other items, in order to reduce classroom disruptions. Thank you for helping us reduce calls to the classroom during important learning time.
LATE PICK-UPS
Students must be picked up within 15 minutes of school dismissal. Any student being picked up late must have the parent/guardian come into the office to sign the late pick-up log. The office will also need to verify identity before releasing students. Students will not be released to anyone not listed on the emergency card.
Please help us to keep your child feeling safe and cared for, as well as avoid the inconvenience of coming into the office to sign the late pick-up log, by arriving within 15 minutes of dismissal every day. If a pattern of late pick up develops, you may be asked to meet with an administrator to develop a plan for on-time pick up. If ongoing issues arise, a referral will be made to the Student Attendance Review Board (SARB).
LEAVING SCHOOL EARLY
Students are not permitted to leave the school grounds at any time during the school day without permission from the school office. Please send a note to your child’s teacher when you need to pick up your child early. The time and reason for leaving should be included. A child will only be released to their parents/guardians and those persons listed on their emergency card unless the school has been notified by the parent/guardian that they have granted permission for someone else to pick up their child. Students must be signed out and picked up in the office by an adult. Students will be called to the office when the adult arrives to sign them out. We do not have students wait in the office for pick up. Photo ID is required of the adult signing out the student. Excessive early pick-ups interfere with learning. When possible, medical and dental appointments should be made outside of school hours.
LOST AND FOUND
All lost and found articles are kept on the front gate, near the flagpole. We urge students and parents/guardians to check these areas frequently for missing items. We often post pictures on Facebook of our “lost clothes.” Unclaimed items will be sent to a charity throughout the year. Jackets, sweaters, lunch boxes, etc., should be marked with the child’s name.
MEDICATION AT SCHOOL
If your child requires medication while at school, a form is available in the school office. It will need to be completed and signed by your child’s doctor and returned with the medication in its original container. All medication will be dispensed from the office. Students are not to bring medicines otherwise, including over the counter drugs such as Tylenol, eye drops, allergy medication or cough drops. The medication form must be completed for any allergies or serious medical problems of which the school should be apprised. This policy is for the protection of all students and school staff.
THINGS TO LEAVE AT HOME
We ask students to be thoughtful of others both inside and outside the school buildings. Items that might disrupt class or cause injuries should be left at home. These include: skates, skateboards, roller blades, baseballs, bats, radios, headphones, iPods, video games, candy, chewing gum, toys, laser pointers, and other similar objects. Potentially dangerous objects such as lighters, matches, weapons (even look-alike and toy) need to stay at home.
Money: Money should not be brought to school unless needed for special needs/activities. Money for pictures, fundraisers, and field trip expenses should be paid by cash unless otherwise directed by the classroom teacher. Students are responsible for their own money. Please send all money in an envelope or wallet. Loose money is very quickly lost. Money should not be given to other students, and students may not sell nor trade items brought from home with schoolmates.
