Our Panthers have Great Character!

Hello Panther Parents,

At New Prospect and Fulton County Schools, we believe in nurturing well-rounded students who grow not only academically but also in their character. Through our Student Success Skills curriculum, all students learn about important character traits. Those who shine in these traits are recognized for their efforts. You can see who was recognized this month for the character traits below. Here are the traits we focused on recently, along with some ways you can reinforce them at home:

Social Competence: This means getting along well with others, being kind, and understanding how to work together.

  • At Home: Encourage your child to play games that require teamwork, like building a puzzle together. Reading books like "How Full Is Your Bucket? For Kids" by Tom Rath can also help.

Problem Solving: This is about finding solutions to challenges and thinking creatively
  • At Home: Give your child age-appropriate puzzles or let them help with simple household problems, like figuring out how to organize their toys. "What Do You Do With a Problem?" by Kobi Yamada is a great book to read together.

Self-Awareness: This means understanding one's own feelings, strengths, and areas for growth
  • `At Home: Talk with your child about their day and how different situations made them feel. Books like "I Like Myself!" by Karen Beaumont can help children appreciate their unique qualities.

Optimism: This is about having a positive outlook and believing that good things can happen
  • At Home: Model positive thinking and encourage your child to look for the good in situations. Reading "The Pout-Pout Fish" by Deborah Diesen can help reinforce this trait.

Self-Advocacy: This means knowing how to speak up for oneself and ask for help when needed.
  • At Home: Role-play different scenarios where your child might need to ask for help or express their needs. "Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon" by Patty Lovell is a wonderful book that encourages self-advocacy.

Reinforcing these traits at home helps children develop into confident, capable humans! Thank you for partnering with us in your child's character development!

Tips to Help Students (and Parents) During Testing

What can I do to help my student?

Students who are prepared, calm, and rested perform better on tests. Here are some of the many ways to help your student approach Georgia Milestones in a relaxed, positive way:

• Encourage your student to use their test-taking skills. These skills include following directions carefully, avoiding careless errors, and reviewing work.

• Explain the purpose of the tests. The assessments give students an opportunity to show what they have learned in school. They also give teachers information that helps them plan instruction.

• Point out that some items may be more difficult than others.

• Be certain your student gets plenty of sleep and has a healthy breakfast and lunch. Taking tests is hard work for many students and can require a lot of energy.

• Be certain your student is at school on time. Rushing and worrying about being late could affect performance on the tests.
