BACK TO SCHOOL TIPS FOR PARENTS
- Help your child adjust to earlier bedtimes just to help them ease into new routines. Set a consistent bedtime for your child and stick with it every night. Getting enough sleep is critical for kids to stay healthy and be successful in school. Not getting enough sleep is linked with lower academic achievement, as well as higher rates of absenteeism and tardiness.
Have your child turn off electronic devices well before bedtime. Try to have the home as quiet and calm as possible when younger children are trying to fall asleep.
Children who eat a nutritious breakfast function better. They do better in school, and have better concentration and more energy. If your child does not have time to eat, send them to school with a grab and go snack like a granola bar.
Create an environment that is homework-friendly. Children need a consistent workspace in their bedroom or another part of the home that is quiet, without distractions, and promotes study.
Schedule ample time for homework. Build this time into choices about participating in after school activities.
Establish a household rule that the TV and other electronic distractions stay off during homework time. Supervise computer and internet use.
Attendance Matters
Every day counts when it comes to student success! Regular school attendance helps students stay connected to learning, build important skills, and keep up with classroom instruction. Families can support success by establishing consistent routines, scheduling appointments outside of school hours when possible, and making attendance a daily priority. When students show up every day, they have more opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed!
How Families Can Partner With Schools
Families play an important role in student success! When families and schools work together, students benefit both academically and socially. Parents and caregivers can partner with their child’s school by maintaining regular communication with teachers, attending school events and parent meetings, supporting learning at home, monitoring attendance and academic progress, and sharing ideas and feedback. By working together, families and schools can create a strong support system that helps every student learn, grow, and succeed!
