Principal's Message Principal's Message

KHS Community,

That was an action packed week here at KHS. We had a great day on Monday with 9th graders supported by our excellent Peer Helpers, we had a great opening day assembly kicked off by our wonderful cheerleaders (and orange chicken for lunch!!!), a solid non-late-start Wednesday yesterday, and a fantastic Frursday with a very successful evacuation Drill, Senior Night for our Cross Country team, and our first home football game to boot! Oh and over 10% of our student body already engaging in our two incredible CTE programs SRTC and BRCOT.

Mostly though, it was just great to see all of the smiling faces.

Speaking of Orange Chicken, please help us keep it by taking a few moments to complete the Application for Free and Reduced Lunch linked below. This is an important tool for us and helps us in more ways than may be obvious.

I want to thank everyone for your help in the implementation of the "First Bell to Last Bell, Phone-Free" mandated by Maine state Law. It went incredibly smoothly because we have incredible students, families, and teachers at KHS. The early results are in, first, boy are those lunches loud now, and I actually saw students playing Uno and actually talking to each other!!!!

Beginning this school year, like all student vehicles, all bicycles and e-bikes brought onto the KHS campus must be registered with the school. This step is being implemented in response to repeated incidents of unsafe bicycle and e-bike operation on campus, which have raised real concerns for the safety of our students and staff. Unsafe operation of a bicycle or e-bike on campus will be addressed according to the Student Code of Conduct. In addition, students whose bikes are not registered will lose the privilege of riding their bikes on campus. We appreciate the partnership of our families in helping ensure that everyone can move safely around campus.

Finally, we look forward to welcoming as many students and families as possible on Thursday, September 10th, from 5–7pm for the KHS Open House. This will be a casual drop-in event, where you can stop by to meet and greet our staff. Please note that this is not a time for Family Teacher Conferences, those will be scheduled soon. Instead, we invite you to take this opportunity to get acquainted with your student’s teachers and make a brief personal connection.

Peace,

Scott Tombleson (He/Him/His - What is this?)

Maine Free Community College Signed into Law!

FANTASTIC news for the Class of 2026 grads and beyond – making the Maine Free College Scholarship permanent!

If a Class of 2026 student has already applied and/or been accepted at a Maine community college, they don’t have to do anything to have the scholarship applied to their financial aid package. It’s automatic. But we’d appreciate you doing what you can to let your seniors and their families know the good news that they now have a tuition-free community college opportunity!

For the Class of 2026 and beyond:

  • The scholarship will cover 100% of tuition costs, rather than both tuition and fees. (Full-time tuition is $2,880 per year, and fees are $1,276 per year).
  • Qualifying students must have lived in Maine for a year immediately prior to admission and during their college enrollment. (Previously, students had to live in Maine while enrolled.)
  • Students must accept federal and other state grant aid (Pell and Maine State Grant) prior to Maine Free College funds being applied as a last-dollar scholarship.
  • Qualifying students have 150% of program completion time, rather than the current 200% of time, to access the scholarship. (So, three years of scholarship money for a two-year associate degree.)
  • Students can take up to two gap years and still qualify for the scholarship. For the Class of 2026, they must enroll no later than Summer 2029.

It is also important to note, Maine’s community colleges have also *guaranteed transfer agreements* with all seven University of Maine System universities and six of Maine’s private universities. So students can knit together a plan to save considerable college costs across their higher education journey – with no admissions essays or fees.
