Message from Jennifer

What a wonderful Flag Ceremony we had this week! A big thank you to Jameson Soares, Camila Casteneda, and Bo Carnevale for leading us as we revisited our character trait of Respect and introduced our new trait, Belonging. Our fourth graders shared their Sunset View Cares Project, Socktober, reminding us how small acts of kindness can make a big difference. We also celebrated students who received Whale-Done awards. Our Foundation reminded us of the Annual Giving Drive, “Have a Whale of a Heart, Do Your Part!”

A special thank you to Sage Newton for leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance and to Bobby Neff, Finn Clements, Ryan Banach, Sam Hamrick, and Bo Bruckart for being an outstanding Color Guard.

I love these opportunities to come together as a school community, celebrate our students, and see the Sunset View Way in action. Watching our students lead, cheer one another on, and take pride in their school is always a highlight of my week! 💙🐋

Whale-Done!

A big congratulations to all of our students who were recognized with Whale-Done awards at our Flag Ceremony! We are so proud of the many ways our students demonstrate the Sunset View Way—being Respectful, Responsible, Safe, and Kind. Whether it's helping a friend, making a responsible choice, or showing kindness to others, these everyday actions make our school a special place to be.

Let's keep the positive momentum going! Encourage your children to look for opportunities to live the Sunset View Way both at school and at home. Remember, even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big difference.

SDUSD Updated Screen Time Policy

As we kick off the new school year, San Diego Unified is introducing a new learner-centered technology resolution to help students stay focused, healthy, and engaged in learning.

Beginning August 10, students will see a few important changes:

  • Video-streaming platforms, such as YouTube, will only be available on district-issued Chromebooks when enabled by teachers for instructional purposes.

  • Non-instructional gaming platforms will still be prohibited on district-issued devices.

  • Computer carts will be removed from Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classrooms, while ensuring students with Individualized Education Plans, 504 Plans, or language-learning needs continue to receive appropriate access.

These updates are part of our commitment to creating learning environments where technology supports student learning, safety, wellness, and healthy development.

As a parent, you can also reduce screentime and non-instructional use of Chromebooks by activating your Blocksi Parent account to monitor and restrict access when your student is not at school. To learn more about how to use Blocksi, read this Blocksi Parent Job Aid.

To learn more about the new resolution click here and click here for the press release.

Playgrounds Closed Before and After School

Our playgrounds are closed to families before and after school each day. This is for the safety of all parties, as we do not have supervision nor support should accidents happen. It also allows our custodial staff to focus on getting the campus ready for the next school day and avoid extra clean-up. We appreciate your understanding!

Attendance

Please do not send your child to school when they are sick.

When your child must be absent for any reason, please call the office at 858-988-2000 by 9:30 a.m. every day of non-attendance, giving the exact reason for the absence. You can also email sunselm@sandi.net.

Any child arriving after 9:00 a.m. must stop in the office and pick up a tardy slip. Let's set good habits early in the school year to arrive on time.

Food Services Information - Universal Free Meals

EVERY student is welcome to join us for FREE Breakfast and Lunch each school day.

  • Universal FREE Meals start the first day of the 2026 - 2027 School Year.

SDUSD Phone Free School Day Policy

The San Diego Unified Board of Education adopted the new Phone Free School Day Policy during the summer of 2025. This means cell phones and smart watches should be "Off and Away" during school hours. Students may not use their devices during school hours. This includes calls or texts home. Students may use classroom, main office, or health office phones for communication home. Parents can contact the school directly if you need to contact your child. Student cell phones must be turned off and stored in backpacks (not pockets). Smart watches may not be used as communication devices during the school day. Thank you for your partnership in enforcing this policy.

NO DOGS ALLOWED ON CAMPUS

Although we love your pets, they are not allowed on campus. Please do not bring pets past the school gates. Please see the district policy below.

Policy Reminder - Animals on Campus

- Animals are permitted at school only when needed for the instructional program and when

under the strict control of qualified instructors or handlers.

-Animals must be obtained from a reliable source and have written certifications that

they are in good health and are not carriers of dangerous disease-causing organisms.

- Hamsters, white rats, black widow spiders, rattlesnakes, and banded psittacine

(parrot-like) birds are too dangerous to have at school.

-Therapy and Service Dogs are allowed with proper certification.

Pets at school: Domestic pets shall not be allowed in classrooms, on or around campus.
