We have been having so much fun at all of the end of year events. Field Day was a great success and we managed to pull off a surprise presentation for Ms. Boudreau's retirement. This was followed by a new 4th grade family picnic and celebration. We have also hosted the birthday lunch table for all the students with June, July, and August birthdays. We concluded the week with a very well attended end of year K-2 School Sing where we surprised Ms. Boudreau again with a customized thank you song for her retirement.
This week is also full of celebrations. Assuming no cancellations due to rain, the 3rd graders will go to the Leb pool tomorrow and the 4th graders will go on a town walking field trip. The kindergarten students are headed to Billings Farm on Thursday.
On Friday, we will have a parade at 8:00 to celebrate the fourth graders and then we will have a short all school end of year assembly for students and staff. At the assembly we will introduce the book, the Water Horse, that we are giving the students as a summer reading book. Dismissal is at 12:30 on Friday.
It has been a truly wonderful school year and I'd like to thank all of you for your support and trust. In particular, the PTO has done so much to keep the staff feeling appreciated and has hosted many joyous events at school.
Thank you!

Thursday Last Day of After School Care
The after school care program will happen this Thursday, but that is their final day. They will not have after school care on Friday, June 13.
The Water Horse
Our school is about to take part in a special, communitywide shared reading event. We will reveal the book and read the first few pages during Friday's student assembly. Every HSS and MLS family will receive a copy of the book, the Water Horse, and will be asked to read it together at home over the summer. I am personally asking you to make the time so that your family can participate in this special activity.
We are setting up a web page that will have links to staff members reading different chapters of the book so feel free to have your child(ren) listen to the book if that's easier for your family.
Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader, and it is also a fun, worthwhile family activity. Here are some discussion questions that you can use.
This is a novel program in that children of all grade levels will all be listening to the same book. Strange or daring as that may seem, it actually makes sound educational sense. Reading professionals recommend reading material out loud that is beyond a child’s own reading level. We also believe that you can and should continue reading chapter books with your older children, even when they are able to read by themselves. We have selected a title that can be followed and understood and enjoyed by younger students, but will still captivate and stimulate older children.
I know that you’ll enjoy this special reading time with your children. When a whole school reads a book, there’s a lot to talk about. With your help, we can build a Community of Readers at our school.

Nurse's Notes
We have so many wonderful pets who accompany our students to school every day through the rain, snow and sun. Let’s pay tribute to all the furry friends who send our students off to school and bring us all so much happiness! Thank you to all the families who allowed your companions to be photographed for this edition of the HSS newsletter. I know there are many more furry family members that I may have missed but will be sure to include them in an edition of the newsletter next year!

Sunscreen Etiquette according to skcin.org:
Did you know that a child can get sunburned in just 15 minutes? Every time a child gets a sunburn, that child’s risk of developing melanoma in adulthood is increased. How can I protect my child this summer? Follow the 5 S’s:
Slip on clothing. Find clothing that UV protection.
Slop on sunscreen. Use a product that has 50 SPF, and apply sunscreen every 2 hours.
Slap on a sun hat. Find a wide brimmed hat and one that has UV protection fabric.
Slide on sunglasses. Find some that have UV 400 rating or greater.
Shade from the sun. Try to find shade during the times of the day when the UV index is at its highest.
Wishing you a summer full of happy, healthy adventures!
