Music
In Kindergarten students have been learning about contrasts in music and how expressive choices can make the listener feel. They have been applying their understanding of piano/forte (loud/soft,) presto/largo (fast/slow) and staccato/legato (short & detached/smooth & connected) using their bodies and hand percussion instruments. We continue to strengthen our ability to keep a steady beat and use our singing voices.
In 1st grade students have been reinforcing their knowledge of basic music notation and expressive contrasts. Using unpitched instruments and body percussion, they have been engaging with a variety of music to practice rhythms with quarter notes, paired eighth notes, half notes, and quarter rests. They have been building their music vocabulary as we explore the expressive uses of dynamics and tempo and discuss what they like about the selections.
In 2nd grade students have studied how composers use different musical concepts to express their ideas or feelings. We continue to build on our knowledge of symbolic notation in preparation for learning about the treble clef and note names on the staff. Students have been playing pitched and unpitched percussion instruments this year as well as singing and moving to music.
In 3rd grade students spent the first trimester focused on reinforcement of basic note and rest values, the treble staff, and structure/form in music. Through a variety of selections, we explored how performers can use expression to show the intent of the composer. We have recently begun the study of recorder! We will continue to reinforce our knowledge of the treble clef as we learn recorder fingerings and songs.
In 4th grade students have focused on applying their understanding of musical elements/vocabulary to selected pieces from a variety of cultures. They began their trimester with a study of traditional West African music using djembes and dununs. Students continue to build their understanding of rhythm and form as well as their ability to discuss expressive qualities in music.
In 5th grade students have been demonstrating and explaining how expressive qualities are used by performers to reflect the composer’s intent. Studying the elements of music helps us better understand why we like the music we do and how it makes us feel. Students continue to build their skills in rhythmic dictation, hand percussion technique, and vocalization through music from different genres.Art

Drama
Drama with Mr. Ewing (T, F)
In Drama all students are working on the Perform standard.
K graders are identifying and beginning to explore using the actor’s tools of body, voice, and imagination in a drama. In First grade, students are using their body and/or voice to show the emotion / feeling of a character in a drama experience. Second graders are using body, voice, and imagination to portray a character in a drama experience.
Third graders are making character choices that mirror the dialogue and emotion or movement in a drama experience. At grade 4, students are communicating character traits through the use of the actor’s tools of body, voice, and imagination. Fifth graders are working on maintaining a believable character in the world of the drama.
Drama with Ms. Szczepaniak (Th)
We are finishing up our second trimester focused on the Drama / Theatre standard Perform (share).
In Kindergarten and 1st Grade we worked on this using Story Drama! We performed scenes from The Mitten by Jan Brett, We read Thank You Omu by Oge Mora, and used our empathy to think about how the characters would feel as we brought the stories to life.
In 3rd grade, we performed story drama based on the book called The Great Fuzz Frenzy , and we explored stories from the African Diaspora to perform tales of Anansi the Spider.
Our 4th and 5th graders worked in small groups to create their own scenes inspired by The Mysteries of Harris Burdick. In February the Fourth Grade began a process drama based in Ancient Egypt. We used narrative pantomime to experience what it might be like to be a papyrus maker in 1500 BCE, we will create endings for a 3000 year old fairy tale:: The Prince Who Knew His Fate. Our Process Drama will culminate in an immersive experience in an Ancient Egyptian Market created entirely by the students. The Fifth Grade is working on a Story Drama based on a Yiddish Folk Tale called The Wise People of Gotham, and the students are jumping into this fun story with such creativity!
