Dear Icahn Families,

I hope you had a restful and enjoyable summer.

As we begin the 2025-2026 school year, I want to extend a warm welcome back to all of our students and families, and a special welcome to those joining the Icahn family for the first.

The start of a new school year is always filled with excitement, possibility, and the opportunity to renew our commitment to the work that defines our passion. Our dedicated educators, administrators, and staff have been hard at work preparing to ensure your child has a safe, engaging, and enriching experience every day.

Icahn Schools remain committed to academic excellence, social-emotional support, and strong partnerships with families. Together, we can ensure that every student reaches their full potential.

Please know that we value your partnership. Communication between home and school is key, and I encourage you to stay connected with your child’s school and teachers throughout the year.

Again, thank you for entrusting us with your child’s education. We will continue doing our best to make you proud to call yourself an Icahn parent.

I look forward to our continued partnership throughout the year.

Sincerely,

Lawford Cunningham

Superintendent

September's name comes from the Latin word for "seven," but it's the ninth month of the year, a misnomer from the original Roman calendar. When January and February were added to the calendar, September was pushed to the ninth position but kept its original name.

Icahn Scholars: Excelling Together, Every Day Counts

We are so proud of our students, staff, and families. Together, we continue to show what is possible. Icahn Charter Schools once again outperformed city and state results.

Icahn Outperforms City and State!

Proficiency Results NYS Exams Grades 3-8 2024–25

Icahn Charter Schools: ELA 87% | Math 87%

NYC DOE: ELA 49.1% | Math 53.4%

New York State: ELA 53% | Math 55%

This achievement reflects high standards, hard work, and our shared belief that all children can thrive when given the opportunity.

Every Day Counts

Academic success is built on consistent attendance. All students can fall behind when they miss too much school, no matter their potential. Research shows that starting as early as preschool, missing just two days each month, or 10 percent of the year, can make it harder to learn to read, keep up with classmates, and stay on track for graduation.

Over time, the impact adds up:

95% attendance = about 9 days missed (less than two weeks)

90% attendance = about 24 days missed (nearly a month)

80% attendance = about 38 days missed (almost half a term)

70% attendance = about 57 days missed (a full term of learning lost)

Being late also matters. Arriving just 10 minutes late every day adds up to 6.5 days of lost learning each year.

By middle school, attendance is one of the top warning signs for dropping out. By high school, it predicts graduation more accurately than test scores. That is why building strong routines and prioritizing being in school every day is so important. When students attend regularly, they not only strengthen their skills but also build friendships, stay engaged, and develop the confidence they will need for future success.

Our students are proving that excellence is possible when families, schools, and communities work together. By celebrating achievements, focusing on attendance, and connecting with resources like the New York Public Library, we are ensuring every Icahn scholar continues to thrive. Remember, always ask for support from your school. We are here to help.

Icahn Charter School Cell Phone Policy Icahn Charter School Cell Phone Policy

Beginning in the 2025–26 school year, and in accordance with New York State law, Icahn Charter Schools are reaffirming our policy on student use of personal electronic devices, including cell phones, during the school day. This has already been our practice at Icahn Charter Schools, and it now aligns with State requirements to create distraction-free schools and ensure safe and focused learning environments.

Cell Phone Policy Guidelines:

  • Students may bring cell phones to school, but they must remain powered off and stored in the area designated by the school.
  • Cell phones may not be used in classrooms, hallways, bathrooms, the cafeteria, or any other part of the school building.
  • If a student needs to contact a parent or guardian during school hours, they may do so through the main office.

We also strongly recommend that students not be given cell phones with internet access. Young children do not yet have the perspective and maturity to safely and appropriately navigate the online world without supervision.

Policy Violations:

To make sure this policy is applied consistently, the following steps will be taken if a student does not follow it:

  1. First offense: Verbal reminder; phone held in the office until the end of the day.
  2. Second offense: Phone held in the office; parent or guardian must pick it up.
  3. Third offense or more: Progressive disciplinary action, including possible loss of the privilege of having a phone at school.

We encourage families to go over this policy with their children and support our efforts to create a respectful, focused learning environment. Please be assured that in the event of an emergency, students will always be able to use a school phone or reach out through staff.
