Letter from the Principal

Hello MS 50 Families,

Welcome back to MS 50! We had a wonderful first week of school. We are so excited to welcome back our 7th and 8th graders and to greet our 6th graders and celebrate their entry into the MS 50 family. All homeroom teachers conducted team building activities on the first day of school that were both fun and educational. We also reviewed our 5 core values Peace and Justice, Respect, Innovation, Determination, and Empathy. Check out some pictures of our first day on our website! I am looking forward to a year filled with rigorous academics and dynamic enrichment activities and providing opportunities to build leaders for peace and justice in the world.

PTA Kickoff In-Person PTA Kickoff In-Person

Our first Parent Teacher Association meeting of the year is this Thursday, September 14 at 6:00PM! We are excited to meet in-person for our PTA meetings this year! Check in at the main desk and we will direct you to our meeting space. This year, the PTA is excited to organize our families to advocate for the resources and space needed to help our students thrive, helping to fundraise for the debate team, class trips, and graduation, and to gather and organize resources for students and families in need.

All parents and guardians of enrolled children are members! If you want to get involved, email Edda Figueroa, our Parent Coordinator or just come to our meeting on Thursday! Our meetings for the rest of the year will be on the first Thursday of each month at 6:00PM at MS 50. All dates are posted on our PTA webpage.

Team Building

We started the year with creative team building activities in each homeroom. From “tallest tower” to collaborative writing projects, to class bingo, to get-to-know-you Venn diagrams, our teachers developed lessons that helped students learn more about each other and were designed to build trust and collaboration while having lots of fun!

Diagnostic Assessments

During the first few weeks of school, all students will take diagnostic assessments in both reading and math using the program i-Ready. These assessments will provide teachers with useful data to help them create instruction that meets students' individual learning needs. We are asking all students to spend 30 minutes a week on individualized reading lessons and 30 minutes a week on individualized math lessons at home using the i-Ready platform, which will tailor lessons for students based on their diagnostic assessments. If you would like to borrow a Chromebook for your child to use at home, please reach out to our tech lead Mr. Stripp at nstripp@ms50.org. Your child’s ELA and math teachers will give further instructions on how to complete these assignments.
