Important Proposal for ELD Program
We Need Your Input!
Dear Parents and Guardians of English Learner (EL) Students,
At California Virtual Academies (CAVA), we are committed to providing the best possible education and support for our English Learner (EL) students. Your input is vital as we continuously work to enhance our English Language Development (ELD) program.
We are proposing two significant changes to strengthen the daily instruction and program eligibility for our EL students. We believe these changes will provide more targeted support and a clearer path toward reclassification (exit from the ELD Program).
1. π Proposed Change: New Primary ELD Curriculum
We propose adopting SummitK12's Connect to Literacy CAVA as the primary curriculum for our daily ELD instruction.
Why this change? The Connect to Literacy CAVA curriculum is specifically designed to meet the rigorous instruction, practice, and assessment needs of English learners. It provides a structured, comprehensive approach that helps students build strong reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills necessary for success in all academic subjects.
Flexible and Family-Focused Learning: This program is ideal for our virtual environment as it offers both synchronous (live, real-time) and asynchronous (flexible, self-paced) language learning opportunities for our students. Furthermore, SummitK12's program includes a family language learning opportunity, allowing family members to join in and support their student's language acquisition journey.
2. β
Proposed Change: Updating Reclassification Eligibility
We propose updating the criteria for reclassificationβthe process by which an English Learner student exits the ELD program and is recognized as Fluent English Proficient.
Currently, one of the required reclassification criteria is EL students must demonstrate proficiency on the Basic Skills Proficiency measure. We propose to accept scores of Basic on Star360 and Nearly Met on CAASPP for this eligibility requirement, in addition to the currently accepted Proficient/Met and Advanced/Exceeded scores.
Why this change? This adjustment recognizes a broader range of academic readiness that mirrors CAVAβs non-EL student scores and aligns our criteria more closely with the understanding that language proficiency is a developmental process. By accepting these scores, we can create a more equitable and accessible path for students who are academically prepared to succeed in mainstream classes without daily ELD support.
Complete a Short Survey to Give Your Input!
We value your perspective as the primary advocates for your children. We want to ensure these changes benefit all our English Learner students and families.
Please take a few minutes to complete a short survey to share your thoughts on these two proposals.
You have three ways to respond:
Record an Audio or Video response: Use your phone or computer to record your spoken feedback.
Type a response: Write your feedback in a text field.
Respond in English or your primary language: You may complete the survey in English or your familyβs primary language.
