Torringford Tigers
April 2025
A Message from Mrs. Galullo & Mrs. Austin
Dear Torringford Families,
A huge thank you to all the families who joined us for Parent/Teacher Conferences last month. Your partnership plays a vital role in your child’s academic success. As we move into this last trimester, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher with any questions or concerns.
As flowers bloom and daylight stretches longer, the shift in seasons can bring changes to your child’s school experience, too. Springtime often brings a mix of energy and new challenges for students. As a parent, your support during this time can make a big difference.
Here are five simple tips to help your child stay on track as the school year heads into its final stretch:
- Encourage Outdoor Learning: Let your child enjoy the spring weather—reading outside or doing math in the park can boost focus and mood.
- Maintain a Routine: Help your child stick to a balanced schedule of schoolwork, activities, and downtime for less stress and better productivity.
- Stay Involved: Ask about school and check their work. Showing interest makes a big difference!
- Promote Healthy Habits: Support good sleep, healthy meals, and hydration to keep your child energized and focused.
- Celebrate Wins: Recognize achievements, big or small. Positive reinforcement keeps them motivated.
Our students and teachers have been working hard, and soon students will have the opportunity to showcase their learning on our district’s universal screeners. Third graders, will be participating in the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) which kicks off on May 6th. Students will have a chance to “show what they know!” Parents, your support is invaluable in making sure students are well-rested and ready to do their best—let’s keep the encouragement positive and remind them to shine!
Thank you for your ongoing support of our students and staff—we appreciate you!
In partnership,
Kelly Galullo & Georgia Austin

Growing and Learning in Pre-Kindergarten
Kindergarten Wonders ~ Fun and Learning in Full Swing!
In Math, we are learning to put numbers in order from 0-10.
We are working on writing and solving equations.
We had a teen number snowball fight! Students threw their “snowballs” while the music played.
When it paused, they read the number on the closest snowball and filled their double ten frame to match.
We are learning about measuring and comparing objects’ weights by using balance scales.
We work with a partner at our vertical thinking boards. Here we were solving story problems and representing our work with manipulatives, numerals, and expressions.
In ELA, we are writing creative fiction books with a beginning, middle, and end. Students love making up their own stories!
We love reading our completed books to our classmates!
Our new unit focuses on writing Informational books. We are learning to teach our readers real facts about a topic.
Our spelling skills are really taking of as we continue through our year in kindergarten!
Students get so excited to learn new phonics skills to help them become stronger readers and writers!
Our high-frequency word review took on a fun St. Patrick’s Day twist as we searched for high-frequency word clovers around the classroom.
Leading up to our Hungry Caterpillar field trip, we read and wrote about several Eric Carle stories.
We also learned about the life cycle of a butterfly!
We love our classroom family!
March 27th is National Scribble Spot Day. Students learned about how different colors represent certain feelings and made their own scribble spots.
PLAY
Our newest play center, “Reading Games”, has been a big hit!
The kids are having so much fun practicing their literacy skills in a hands-on manner.
Science
By following the steps of the engineering design process, students created their own leprechaun traps out of recycled materials.
In kindergarten, we incorporate our learning in a playful manner.
Here is a weather station where we learn vocabulary about weather.
We also played and learned in a dramatic Garden Center where we continued our learning about the effects of weather.
School Spirit days are lots of fun!
We went on a field trip to the Warner Theatre to see The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show!
We celebrated the start of spring by making beautiful butterflies!
First Grade Fun ~ Discover the Excitement!
Our friend Griffin taught us Heggerty.
He did such a great job and we learned so much with him!
Second Grade Scoop: Fun and Learning Awaits!
Third Grade Thrills ~ What's Up in Class!
Students in Mrs. Monroe’s class have been working hard to figure out the area and perimeter of rectangles and squares in math. Students use colored tiles to build the rectangle. They multiply the length and width of the rectangle to find the area and add up the side lengths to find the perimeter.
Students use the Geoboard on the Bridges Math app to help them create different polygons to play WorkPlaces and create congruent halves of squares. The students really enjoy using the math apps to help them with their learning.
.
Partners read a book together to practice their phonics skills and their reading fluency. They take turns reading each page in the book and asking each other questions about what they read.
In reading, students work in small groups to find the message of a story “The Big Game”. After reading the text, they figured out that being a good friend and being honest with each other is more important than winning a game. The story also shows that when we make a mistake, we should be responsible and admit our mistakes so we can make amends.
A Note From Mrs. Farella, Library Media Specialist
Thank you so much to everyone who participated in the library book fair! We had a successful event and I can’t wait to buy more books for our library with the money we raised!
.
Also, as we near the end of the school year, please look for any library books that may have been misplaced and have your child return them to the library. Reading happens everywhere so it is not uncommon to find library books in unusual places.
