"The Flood of 2024"

When the Waters Rose, So Did We!

"The Flood of 2024"When the Waters Rose, So Did We!

"The Great Soak-tober Saga" "The Great Soak-tober Saga"

On October 28, 2024, Providence Hall faced an unexpected challenge when a major flood that disrupted campus operations. Although students and teachers were safely off-site at the time, the situation required swift action to protect our school’s facilities and ensure learning could continue seamlessly—albeit online.

Our dedicated team sprang into action, coordinating efforts to safeguard classrooms and essential spaces while minimizing the impact on our students’ learning experiences. This event highlighted the resilience and adaptability of our community, proving that even when physical spaces are disrupted, our commitment to education remains steadfast.

As the waters recede, we hope that the temporary chaos leaves us with a renewed sense of pride not only in our school’s unity, resourcefulness, and resilience but also in our physical building itself—a reminder of the importance of caring for the spaces that support our learning community.

The flood may have impacted our campus, but let’s choose not to let it dampen our spirit!

Stage

The stage’s insulation was soaked and had to be completely removed. The wood is being dried, and once it’s ready, new insulation and decking will be installed.

Rooms

In each flooded room, the crew made flood cuts in the drywall, removed wet insulation, and thoroughly dried everything before beginning restoration. All items, including shelving units, were removed from the walls to ensure proper drying.

Gym

The gym floors are still in the drying process, with water trapped beneath the floorboards. Restoration in this area will take the longest to complete.

Next Steps Next Steps

Our next steps include replacing items lost in the flood, such as curriculum, supplies, desks, and chairs, and moving teachers back into their classrooms.

The music room and stage are still undergoing restoration due to the extensive water damage in these areas. Additionally, several offices, hallways, and the teacher workroom are being worked on. We are hopeful these areas will be completed soon; however, in-person instruction will go on as planned on November 18th.

The gym restoration is expected to take longer, likely until February or March. We will communicate our plans for PE classes during this time early next week and continue to provide updates on the overall restoration process.

Due to the flood, we were able to move our fall play to another school. Further details on the fall play will be provided in upcoming Principal's Updates. We are also fortunate to have access to space at the Junior High and the Auxiliary Gym at the Elementary school for our winter sports programs, allowing extracurricular activities to continue with minimal disruption.

In addition to the gym, we’ll be replacing carpets throughout the building. The flood damage has weakened the adhesive on the carpet tiles, in time this will cause them to peel. To ensure the school can reopen by November 18th, the carpets will be thoroughly cleaned, with full replacement scheduled to take place on weekends.

Gym Floor Update Gym Floor Update

Since October 28th, we've restored six classrooms, the music room, teacher workroom, nine offices/storage areas, and two hallways. The stage is nearly complete, and the gym floor has been fully removed as we prepare for a new installation. Gym floor demolition began 16 days after the flood, and despite all drying efforts, we discovered significant water beneath the floor.
