Updates and Information About our School LIbrary

Hello! I'm Camille Ryckman, the Digital Teacher Librarian at Columbine High School. I'm privileged to share what makes our library such a valuable resource for your student.

Our library has become a vibrant hub where students curl up with a good book, study for exams, work on group projects, or simply find a comfortable spot to relax during lunch or their off period. Every day, I see our outstanding teachers, staff, and students make this space come alive.

Libraries are for everyone...

My long-term goal is for every student to see themselves as a library user. This might mean checking out a book, accessing digital resources, getting help with technology, or finding a quiet place to recharge. Libraries are for everyone, and I'm here to support whatever your student needs.

Tech Support & Chromebook Services

Chromebook Support

We're your first stop for Chromebook assistance! If your student's device won't turn on, has a broken screen, or has liquid damage, bring it to the library. Most issues can be resolved quickly. For more complex repairs, we work directly with our on-site tech specialist at no cost to your family.

Important note: If damage is intentional, the district will assess and issue fines accordingly. We cannot waive these fines. Please encourage your student to keep the case and screen protector on their device and handle it with care.

Chromebook Loaner Program

If your student forgets their Chromebook at home, we have loaners available:

  • Students receive 3 no-questions-asked loaner days per school year

  • Devices must be returned by the end of the day

  • After 3 loans, we request keys, a phone, or a wallet as collateral to ensure the device is returned

  • Loaner Chromebooks have a bright yellow sticker for easy identification

While most students only need occasional loaners, extended borrowing does impact availability for others. If you find a loaner Chromebook at home, please remind your student to return it to the library.

Additional Library Resources

Your student has access to:

  • Flexible study spaces for individual and group work

  • An extensive book collection across all genres and interests

  • Board games and puzzles for break times

  • Printing services

  • Basic school supplies (glue sticks, colored pencils, note cards, paper, and more)

Most importantly, we're here to help! If your student needs anything for their schoolwork, please encourage them to ask. Our goal is to support every student's academic success.

The Role of Your Digital Teacher Librarian The Role of Your Digital Teacher Librarian

As a Digital Teacher Librarian, I serve your student in three important ways:

The Digital Expert
I help students navigate our digital world confidently by developing critical thinking skills for evaluating online information, using technology tools effectively and responsibly, and building digital citizenship skills for their future.

The Teacher
I collaborate with classroom teachers to enhance learning, guide students in research and information literacy, and design learning experiences that integrate technology meaningfully. This year, I'm working closely with our AP Seminar teachers to provide specialized instruction in research skills and media literacy.

The Librarian
I create an inclusive, welcoming space for all students. I curate resources to support both classroom teaching and student interests, maintain collections that reflect our diverse community, foster a love of reading and discovery, and connect students with books and resources that spark their curiosity.

Highly Effective Schools through Libraries (HESTL)

Since joining Columbine, my focus has been on building a strong foundation for our library program. I've worked to align our library with Colorado State Library Services Standards, which provide a framework for developing an effective library that grows alongside our school community.

With the support of Principal Scott Christy, I've worked to improve our library in several key areas:

Planning and Management: Established systems and procedures that help the library run smoothly and serve students effectively.

Environment: Collaborated with our woodworking class to install student-created shelving, added a vibrant new mural, and rearranged furniture to create spaces that support various student needs—whether learning, studying, meeting with others, or relaxing.

Leadership: Drew on my K-12 experience and my time as the District Library Services Teacher on Special Assignment to provide leadership in library services across our school.

Teaching: This year, I'm focusing on direct instruction with students. I'm partnering with our AP Seminar teachers to bring expertise in research skills and media literacy to their classes, which has been an incredible opportunity to support student learning.

Camille Ryckman
Digital Teacher Librarian

My path to librarianship began in the classroom, teaching Social Studies to students navigating non-traditional educational pathways. Working with these resilient young people taught me something profound: everyone deserves access to knowledge and opportunity, and the public library is often the most powerful free resource available, especially for those who need it most.

That experience, combined with my own deep love of reading and the transformative power of education, inspired me to pursue my Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Denver. I joined the Jeffco Public Schools District office as the Library Services Coordinator, overseeing library programs across the district—a role that allowed me to expand access and advocate for students systemwide. Now, as the Librarian at Columbine High School, I bring this same commitment to every student who walks through our doors.

My core belief: The library isn't just a resource center—it's a space where students develop the independence, confidence, and agency to direct their own learning and futures. I've seen firsthand that education and opportunity can be life-changing, and I'm here to make sure every student knows the library is their place to discover what's possible.

Beyond the library, I'm a proud 5th-generation Coloradan who loves hiking our trails, exploring local restaurants, and connecting with our community. I share my passion for learning and growth with my husband, a fellow educator, and our two accomplished daughters.
