Principal Update 6/10/24
We have reached the end of another terrific year at Memorial. These final days will include a lot of reflection, reminiscing, and a few goodbyes. While we all look forward to a break from the day to day routines of school, we are also aware that for some, summertime can bring feelings of sadness and missing friends and the adults that students interact with every day. So, there are a few things that I would like to share as resources and options for staying connected and in a bit of routine for the summer.
1. Summer Reading: Please see the information below about summer reading in MURSD. Building a lifelong habit of reading every day is a great skill. We hope that each child will spend a portion of their day every day this summer either reading or being read to- or a combination!
2. ST Math: We are SO proud of our mathematicians this year. They have made tremendous progress on their grade level ST Math journeys and persevered through challenging puzzles. ST Math will continue to be available to your child until mid-August when the promotion update happens, so see below for more information on spending the summer with JiJi.
3. Summer Readers at Upton Library: See below for information regarding weekly Memorial staff reading times at the Upton Library. We look forward to connecting with your children over the summer and hope you can join us for a few story hours.
4. Reading on the Lawn: If your child is looking to connect with some friends and get some summer reading in, please plan to attend one of our open summer reading on the lawn days. Bring a beach towel, some water, and a good book or two and spend some time reading with me. Wednesday mornings from 9:00-9:30am on 7/10, 7/17, 7/24, 7/31, 8/7, and 8/14.
I appreciate those of you who completed our school survey this spring. We had a much lower response than years past, and so I hope that anyone who did not complete it but would like to share information, ideas, suggestions with me will reach out through email to schedule a conversation. I truly appreciate those of you who provided ideas and suggestions for further family and community involvement next year. Since coming to MURSD four years ago, getting community events back up and running to pre-COVID involvement has been slow. Bringing back field trips and nights like Specialist Night has been nice, but like several of you mentioned, we are still missing those opportunities for stronger home-school partnership. I am going to spend the summer working on a plan to incorporate more in-school parent opportunities as well as a series of family nights that parents can opt into attending. I hope that you will see and feel a difference in that next year.
And finally, a big thank you to our families for your part in a terrific school year. Your support of your children, of our teachers, and of our staff is what makes our school such a special place. Your children are amazing, and I love watching every single one grow from Prek and Kindergarten through Grade 4. I am excited to have our fourth grade families in on Tuesday morning to share in the celebration of an awesome class. Our fourth graders are tremendous role models for our younger kids and exemplify RISE. They deserve to have a send off with all of the bells and whistles, and I look forward to doing just that on Tuesday.
Have a wonderful week and summer!
Warmly,
Wendy

School Hours
Our school hours are 8:45am-3:15pm. Drop off begins at 8:45 and students who arrive after 9:00am are considered tardy. We will begin dismissal right around 3:15pm.
Due to the hectic nature of the late afternoon, we will no longer be allowing parent dismissals from the main office after 2:45pm. If your child has an appointment, please plan to dismiss him/her earlier, or make use of our pick up line at 3:15pm. Thank you for understanding.
