Message from Principal Rogers Message from Principal Rogers

Hello SIS Families,

We’ve had a successful week completing our first IXL LevelUp Diagnostic Benchmark of the school year! Students completed the Math Diagnostic on Tuesday and the ELA Diagnostic today. Thank you to our students and staff for their focus and flexibility as we implemented an adjusted schedule to provide dedicated time for both assessments.

The information we gain from IXL will be an important resource for our teachers throughout the school year. The diagnostic provides detailed, real-time information about what students know and what they are ready to learn next. Teachers will use this data to identify areas of strength and opportunities for growth, inform classroom instruction, provide targeted support when students need additional practice, and identify opportunities for enrichment. Most importantly, this is not data that will simply sit on a report—we want to use it to help us make informed instructional decisions and respond to what our students need.

Tonight is our SIS Parent/Guardian Orientation, and I’m excited to welcome you! This evening is designed for caregivers, so students do not need to attend. Please see the details below to ensure you know where to go and what to expect; we look forward to seeing you this evening!

Next week is Shorewood School Safety Week. Our goal is to ensure that every student and staff member is informed, confident, and well-practiced in our school safety procedures. Each day will focus on a specific safety protocol, with opportunities for students and staff to practice what to do in the event of an emergency. Tomorrow during Flex Time, teachers will review our School Safety presentation with students so they understand the purpose of each drill and know what to expect next week.

Our tentative Safety Week schedule is below. Please note that some drills may need to be adjusted based on weather conditions.

  • Tuesday, September 22 – Fire Drill (weather permitting)

  • Wednesday, September 23 -- "Hold" Drill

  • Thursday, September 24 – "Shelter" Drill (Tornado/Severe Weather)

  • Friday, September 25 – "Lockdown" Drill and Emergency Alert Test

  • Monday, September 28 – "Evacuation" Drill (weather permitting)

As a reminder, there is no school on Monday, September 21. We look forward to welcoming students back on Tuesday, September 22.

As always, please take a few moments to review the important information and updates below. Have a wonderful rest of your week, and I look forward to connecting with many of you at Parent/Guardian Orientation this evening!

In Partnership,

Tiara Rogers, SIS Principal

SIS Parent/Guardian Orientation: TONIGHT, September 17, 6-8 p.m.

Please come to SIS Parent/Guardian Orientation tonight from 6-8 p.m. The event is just for adult caregivers, giving you the opportunity to walk your child’s schedule and briefly see each of their teachers. If you are driving, try to arrive early enough to find street parking. Ask your student for their schedule (or look for it in Infinite Campus) so you can find your way around. We will have building maps available.

Note: because PE and Art/PLTW meet during the same period on alternating days, you can go to either class during the appropriate bell schedule period and meet the other teacher later in the evening if you wish.

SIS School Picture Ordering Information / Retake Day

In Flex Homeroom classes today and tomorrow, teachers are distributing School Picture proofs and ID cards. Please ask your student for the proof, which includes the link to visit the Scholastic Reflections website to place an order, if you'd like portrait prints. Enter your email address and “your access code” (it’s your child's Student Number, which you can find in Infinite Campus, by asking your student to find it on the sticker in their binder, or by looking on the portrait proof). Please place your order before Monday, October 5, if you care to. Packages will be delivered to school and sent home via Homeroom teachers.

Students who were absent on the original picture day (or ones who’d like to try for a different outcome) will be photographed on Picture Retake Day on Tuesday, September 29 during the 1st and 2nd Hours. You must submit this form <<Picture Retake Day Signup>> by 9 a.m. on Thursday, September 24 for your student to be on the list for a retake appointment! Retake images will replace the original image for the SIS yearbook.

Costa Rica Trip: Interested Traveler and Chaperone Q&A

Does your child take Spanish and want to know more about the Costa Rica Trip in the summer of 2027? Interested student travelers and guardians are invited to attend an optional informational meeting in Profe Anton’s Room 234 at SIS on Friday, September 18, 4-5 pm.

Topics will include the student application process, payments, important due dates, and safety information. While it is NOT mandatory for a parent/guardian to attend this meeting with their child, it is recommended. Also, any parents interested in potentially chaperoning the Costa Rica Trip (we may need one or more parent volunteers) must attend one of these two meetings and fill out an interest survey to be considered.

SIS PTO News SIS PTO News

Thank you to everyone that attended our SIS PTO meeting last night. We will be having our next meeting on Wednesday, October 21 at Three Lions Pub at 5:30 p.m. All are welcome!

Please save the date for the SIS Fall Dance on Friday, November 20 from 6-8 p.m. More information will come, including how to volunteer/chaperone.

District and Community News District and Community News

From the District Nurse

In 2023, Wisconsin passed a law allowing your child’s school to maintain and administer a quick-relief asthma inhaler to treat life-threatening respiratory distress at school. Similarly, Wisconsin law allows schools to stock FDA-approved nasal epinephrine spray (Neffy) as our emergency medication for anaphylaxis. All Shorewood schools now have a stock albuterol inhaler and Neffy, in addition to an epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen). These may be utilized by our health team and first responders for urgent and emergent situations only. These stock medications do not replace the need for students with prescribed emergency medications to have their own at school.

In addition, as we start the year, we wanted to share a few reminders from the health offices:

  • Immunizations: Wisconsin Student Immunization Law (Wis. Stat. § 252.04) requires all students to meet a minimum number of required immunizations to attend school. You may check your child’s records using the Wisconsin Immunization Registry (WIR) and use this form to update your child’s information. Immunization requirements can be waived only for health, religious, or personal conviction reasons. Your child's immunization record must meet Wisconsin State requirements by the 30th day of school, 10/14/2026. Either by having your child receive all required immunizations or by filling out, signing, and returning the form waiving immunization to the school.

  • Medications at school: If your child needs to take medication (prescription or over-the-counter) at school, this form must be completed every school year for all prescription, emergency, and over-the-counter medications. Please bring the completed form, with the prescribing provider’s signature for prescriptions, and medication in its original packaging to the main office at your child’s school.

  • Health conditions and support plans: If your child has any medical diagnoses that require specific care, it is important to keep the school informed. Some students may require an Individualized Health Plan (IHP) or an Emergency Action Plan (EAP) at school to help support health needs while they are at school. Medical diagnoses that should be reported include, but are not limited to:

  • Seizure Disorder

  • Severe Allergies (Allergy Action Plan)

  • Asthma (Asthma Action Plan)

  • Diabetes

  • Feeding support needs (G-tube)

  • When to stay home: Please keep your child home if they have:

    • An illness that significantly impacts their ability to learn.

    • A temperature of 100°F or higher.

    • Vomiting

    • Diarrhea

    • Untreated live head lice.

    • A confirmed communicable disease that requires students to stay at home.

Please reach out with any questions you may have related to this information or your child’s specific needs. We look forward to working together to ensure a safe and healthy school year!

Kindly,

Cassandra Gabor

Reporting School Absences and Appointments

We appreciate when guardians report student absences to the SIS office in a timely fashion. Whether your student needs to arrive late, leave school for an appointment, or will be out for the whole day, you now have three ways to report the information so we can keep things flowing smoothly. Please use whatever reporting method is easiest for you!

  1. Leave a voicemail on the attendance line at 414-963-6959
  2. Email sisinfo@shorewood.k12.wi.us
  3. Use the Infinite Campus Portal (More > Absence Requests)

For medical appointments, please submit the slip you receive from the doctor's office after the appointment to the main office, either on paper or via email to sisinfo@shorewood.k12.wi.us.

When your student was in elementary school, it may have seemed natural for you to notify their teacher about absences and appointments. You do not need to do that in grades 7-12. The office will record attendance information in Infinite Campus, where all of your child's teachers will see it.

Refer to the SSD 7-12 Grade Attendance Guidelines

To learn more about reporting student absences through the Infinite Campus website, please click here for a brief introduction or here for a video. The Campus Parent (Infinite Campus app) is available both on the Apple and Google Play stores. If you need help with accessing Infinite Campus, please contact Iris Bohan at ibohan@shorewood.k12.wi.us for assistance.

Wanted: Boxes of Kleenex!!

We no longer require boxes of tissue on the school supplies list, but we still count on families to donate this vital resource as early and as often as they are able. If you have the means, please consider sending a few boxes of tissues in with your student during the first few days of school. All of our noses will bless you!

Should families have to donate facial tissues to schools?

Schools already provide essential hygiene supplies—such as toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, and period products—by purchasing the lowest-cost options available. While this keeps budgets under control, it often results in low-quality items. If facial tissues were added to the school budget, they would likely be purchased in the same way. Anyone who has had a cold can imagine how unpleasant it would be to rely on tissues that feel like institutional-grade toilet paper.

Adding facial tissues to the budget would also require shifting funds away from instructional materials such as books, classroom supplies, and other learning resources. Although bulk purchasing might meet student needs, estimating the exact amount needed each year is difficult.

A more practical and flexible solution is to request voluntary donations throughout the year. If every student was able to bring three full-sized boxes, the communal supply might be sufficient. Families who can contribute more are welcome to do so, while families on tight budgets are not obligated to contribute at all. This approach helps maintain an adequate supply of tissues without burdening teachers or reducing funding for essential classroom materials.

Thank you!
