Superintendent's Message
Welcome Back to a New School Year in the Burlingame School District!
Dear Burlingame Community,
As we stand on the threshold of the 2026-2027 school year, we are filled with immense joy and anticipation for the return of our vibrant students, dedicated staff, and supportive community. This year marks a renewed opportunity to strengthen our partnership and work hand in hand toward our shared goal of nurturing each and every learner’s potential. Together, we are ready to embark on an inspiring journey of discovery and growth.
Behind the scenes, our District Office team has been working tirelessly to ensure a smooth and successful launch to the 2026–2027 school year. We are proud to share that we have reached 100% staffing for all certificated and management positions, ensuring our schools are fully supported. To enhance the learning experience, we are rolling out a new 1:1 student-device initiative—providing iPads for TK–1st grade, Chromebooks for 2nd–4th grade, and Apple Neos for 5th–8th grade—alongside the implementation of the 'Great First Eight' curriculum for our Transitional Kindergarteners. We have also prioritized educator development through a district-wide partnership with the California Reading & Literature Project (CRLP) to strengthen support for our English Learners. Furthermore, we are reintroducing Care Solace to provide 24/7 confidential mental health and social-service coordination for our students, staff, and families at no cost. These operational enhancements, including the launch of our new digital employee portal, reflect our unwavering commitment to providing a supportive, modern, and high-quality educational environment for every Burlingame learner.
In Burlingame, we are rooted in supporting each student academically, behaviorally, and emotionally with at least a year’s worth of growth. Whether through providing extra academic support, teaching skills for self-regulation and emotional intelligence, or inspiring students to reach beyond what they thought possible, our Burlingame Educators are dedicated to helping each and every child thrive.
While our seven schools share core values, each brings its own unique traditions and spirit to our district. To support these communities, we have invested heavily in creating modern, welcoming learning environments. We are thrilled to share that our district-wide Family Resource Center is now open, and we have added two new Transitional Kindergarten classrooms at McKinley. Furthermore, all seven sites are receiving modern cafeteria upgrades, with our Multi-Purpose Rooms (MPRs) scheduled to be fully open for students by October 1st.
Beyond these major projects, our maintenance teams have worked tirelessly this summer to ensure our campuses are ready. From installing energy-efficient LED lighting and completing vital plumbing and irrigation repairs to refreshing our schools with new paint and landscaping, we are dedicated to making every site functional and inviting. Looking ahead, we are also pleased to share that the front entrance improvements at Burlingame Intermediate School (BIS)—including expanded sidewalks for student bus traffic—will be completed within the first few months of the school year.
As we start this new chapter together, let us unite to celebrate our shared strengths and cherish the unique traditions that make our community special. By working together, we can cultivate truly remarkable experiences for every one of our students. Wishing everyone a year filled with growth, connection, and achievement—because in Burlingame, we remain steadfast in our commitment to the potential of each and every single student.
Welcome back, and let’s make this year extraordinary!
Sincerely,
Dr. Marla Silversmith
Superintendent

Did you hear? BSD has a district-wide Family Resource Center (FRC). The FRC is located at McKinley Elementary but serves the entire district. We believe that every family deserves access to the tools and opportunities that foster growth, well-being, and connection. The Big Five Community Packet
Immediate Action Emergency Response for Schools
The Big Five is a common emergency plan adopted by all San Mateo County school districts and law enforcement agencies. Created by San Mateo County's Coalition for Safe Schools and Communities, it provides five immediate action responses in any given emergency: Shelter in Place; Drop, Cover, and Hold On; Secure Campus; Lockdown/Barricade; and Evacuation.
The Big Five has become the cornerstone of emergency response for San Mateo County's schools. Learn about The Big Five for the Community: English (26-27) / Spanish (25-26--this will be updated by the County soon).
