Attendance and Absences

DCPS is transitioning to a new system for tracking excused absences. Starting September 8th, parents and caregivers must submit excuse notes for attendance through Aspen GO—a mobile friendly version of Aspen Parent Portal, and the same platform used for school enrollment and reenrollment. Please visit the DCPS Attendance webpage for guidance on how to submit an excuse note.

English and Language Arts with Mr. Winston

We had a great week in class further tracking character change and conflict through the week’s reading, “Skitter Hitter” by Jason Renolds. Next week, we will complete our final in-class reading for Unit 1 titled “Raymond’s Run” by Toni Cade Bambara. We will also spend time in the school library on Tuesday. The school’s stellar Librarian, Mr. Reichlen, will share information about the expansive set of resources that Deal’s library has to offer.

Additionally, we will organize our binders in class next week. If you are able, it would be helpful to provide your scholars with 5-tab dividers for their ELA binders. No worries if you are not, as I plan on having enough for everyone who needs a set.

As always, please encourage your scholars to read at least 20 minutes each night. Practice makes progress!

World Geography and Cultures with Ms. Wesselhoft

Students have been hard at work crafting their letters to local representatives to make changes in their communities! Next week, in class, students will finish their final draft and mail their letters.

We will then learn about the Five Themes of Geography before the LONG weekend!

Math with Mx. Gomez

Students may submit their scratch paper for Pear homework and their respective iReady lesson(s) due on Friday when we return October 14.

6th Grade Accelerated Math

  • Next week, students will use tape diagrams to model dividing whole numbers by fractions. They'll also take a mock test covering fraction division concepts. The Unit 3 RCT #1 will be administered on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 7–8.

7th Grade Math

  • In Math 7, students will apply the constant of proportionality to solve problems involving cost per item and item per cost. Later in the week, they'll use long division to convert fractions into decimals. Students will take the Unit 4 Formative D assessment on Wednesday, October 8.

Make-Up Opportunity for Math 7 Students

Students who were absent for Yom Kippur and missed the Unit 3 RCT in Math 7 can come after school on Tuesday to complete the assessment.

Earth and Space Science with Ms. Sagan

Hello scientists!

Great job last week – I loved seeing you work hard on understanding plate boundaries, examining plate movement with milky ways, exploring wave motion, and more. Great work!

Next week is a short week. Students will be completing an engineering challenge where they will design a building with the goal of surviving an earthquake! The materials used will be marshmallows and toothpicks, which means we will need some donations of marshmallows! If you are able to, please send a bag of mini marshmallows in with your student on Monday for our lesson on Tuesday. We will wrap up the short week with Roots Quiz 1.6 on Wednesday 10/8, followed by the Amplify Critical Juncture assessment.

Looking ahead, our Term 1 Roots summative which will be on Wednesday, 10/15. The summative will include all root words to date. Please help students remember to study over the long weekend! There are Blooket links posted to Canvas for students to study.

Donation Request: Mini-Marshmallows and Toothpicks

Another week, another food donation! We are doing another favorite lab - the Great Shakeout Lab! This lab requires mini-marshmallows and toothpicks in order for students to build a building for our "earthquake simulator" (me, putting the building on a tray of jello and shaking it violently).

If you can, please donate!

Roots!

Root Words 1.6

  • Alp = mountain (think Alpine, The Alps)-ic = like, of (think artistic, scientific)

  • Meta = after, beyond (after, beyond (think metacognition, metastasize)

  • Morph = shape, form (think metamorphic, morphology)

  • -ic = like, of (think scientific, artistic, biologic)

  • Sed = sit, settle, rest (think sedimentary, sedentary, sedate)

Keepers: uni, bi, tri, post, gen, poly, sub, hyper, pre, pyro, topo, seismo, petro, ign, super

Blookets

Throughout the year, I will post Blookets before every summative to help students study. Blooket is a platform that turns study flashcards into interactive mini-games in order to make studying fun! I highly recommend that students get a feel for the platform through the Roots Q1 Blooket that is posted under the Roots Q1 module. Please ensure that your students are clicking the correct link - there is a link that requires an account (for the overachievers who want to track points and collect the little icons) and a link that does not require an account (for the kids who just want to study). If your student is complaining that Blooket keeps asking them to sign in, then they're clicking the wrong link!

Notes from MLL Support

Last week we integrated ACCESS Speaking practice based on student levels and their reading materials in class. Students practiced writing and recording their answers into their computers. Students also continued with their stations with iReady on Tuesdays/Thursdays and student applications on M/W/F along with a teacher-led station.

Library Corner

Mr. Reichlen has created a new web collection of school and public library links to support the novel lists for independent reading texts from the CommonLit 360 ELA curriculum. Here students can find access points to all of the catalog records for recommended texts that support each of this year's unit themes organized by grade level and unit. Students can checkout and place items on hold. The collection will be updated throughout the school year to provide access to recommended titles as units change.
