School Happenings
Little Wound School in Kyle, South Dakota
Little Wound School in South Dakota proudly held its 30th Annual Buffalo Hunt Ceremony as part of Culture Week. This long-standing tradition continues to play an important role in cultural learning and student leadership.
About a decade ago, the school began inviting senior male students to write an essay on the buffalo hunt's cultural importance. Each year, the school selects one student based on their reflection and understanding of the ceremony’s significance.
This year, Josh earned the honor. He prepared for the hunt with family and elders — an important moment of learning, cultural responsibility, and connection to Lakota tradition.
BIE celebrates Josh for his meaningful participation, as well as the staff and community members who help ensure this ceremony continues to teach and inspire future generations.
Jemez Day School in Jemez Pueblo, New Mexico
Jemez Day School celebrated Indigenous Peoples’ Day with a vibrant showcase of culture, community, and pride. Staff and students arrived in their traditional attire, filling the campus with color, identity, and cultural strength.
Lunchtime featured Indigenous music and a delicious meal of posole with locally sourced red and green chile, bringing together tradition, food, and celebration. The day also gave students a chance to reflect on the deeper meaning behind Indigenous Peoples’ Day: honoring sovereignty, acknowledging cultural survival, recognizing historical truth, and celebrating the ongoing contributions of Indigenous peoples in every field and community.
The celebration at Jemez Day School highlighted the resilience, identity, and unity of the JDS Eagles — an uplifting reminder of the strength and beauty of Indigenous cultures.
Many Farms High School in Many Farms, Arizona
Many Farms High School recently recognized students and staff who show leadership, responsibility, and commitment to their school community.
This month, freshman Jeremiah voluntarily stepped up during lunch to help clean the campus after his peers. His willingness to take initiative reflects the strong values of service and community pride MFHS promotes.
The school also announced its September Students and Staff of the Month, an honor determined through peer and staff nominations. The Celebration Committee reviews the submissions and selects individuals who demonstrate hard work, positive attitudes, and strong contributions to campus life. Recipients receive a certificate, a gift card, and school-wide recognition.
Many Farms High School and the BIE applaud Jeremiah and all September honorees for making their campus a better place through leadership, responsibility, and respect.

News and Announcements
Casa Blanca Community School Educator Receives Desert Blossom Award
The Bureau of Indian Education proudly congratulates Casa Blanca Community School and educator Viola Harrison on being selected for the Desert Blossom Award by the Arizona Department of Education Office of Indian Education. This award honors educators who demonstrate exceptional dedication to Native American students, and Ms. Harrison’s work exemplifies that commitment.
For more than 12 years, Ms. Harrison has served the Gila River Indian Community as an innovative educator, mentor, and leader. Her vision for expanding STEAM opportunities at Casa Blanca Community School in Bapchule, Arizona, has transformed learning for students in grades K–5 by bringing cutting edge technology, coding, and hands on learning into the classroom through partnerships and initiatives.
Her leadership also inspired the creation of the school's Future Friday program, where students engage in robotics, engineering, makerspace projects, and real world problem solving. Beyond the classroom, Ms. Harrison builds strong connections among families, students, and educators through STEAM nights and other community centered initiatives.
Her commitment to interactive learning, cultural relevance, and student empowerment leaves a lasting impact on the school and the wider community. The BIE congratulates Ms. Harrison and Casa Blanca Community School on this well deserved recognition.
Campus Construction at Many Farms High School
A major transformation is underway at Many Farms High School through the Great American Outdoors Act Legacy Restoration Fund, helping create a modern campus that better supports students, educators, and the community.
These photos show construction progress since work began in December 2024, from laying the foundation to a modern campus taking shape. When complete, the project will consolidate educational programs into a single facility, provide more reliable heating and cooling systems, and modernize aging infrastructure to create a safer and more accessible learning environment for generations to come.
On September 3, 2026, Many Farms High School facilities and IT leaders, along with the BOS Navajo Supervisory Facility Manager, took a construction tour to see the progress!
The Bureau of Indian Education is initiating a Tribal Consultation to seek tribal input and guidance on two proposed policies: the Personal Wireless Devices & Digital Wellness Policy and the K-12 Student Artificial Intelligence Acceptable Use Policy. BIE is committed to providing a safe, culturally enriching, and academically rigorous environment for all Native students, while recognizing the profound impact new tools and technologies have on education.
