WRESTLING

It's been a busy few weeks for our wrestlers! Clio hosted the Metro League Championships on Saturday, February 1st, and three Mustangs finished with Metro League honors. Jackson Wilkinson earned Honorable Mention, Chase Grosch earned Second Team honors, and D'Marion Erlenbeck, who finished the tournament as Metro League Champion, earned First Team honors.

WRESTLING

The next weekend saw the grapplers competing in the MHSAA District tournament. On Saturday, D'Marion Erlenbeck dominated his competition, winning by pin (2:23), tech (21-4), and major decision (14-1) on his way to the finals match, where he pulled off an amazing tech win in triple overtime against his previously undefeated Gaylord opponent. In Montrose on Sunday, Mackenzie LaFreniere punched her ticket to regional competition with a quick pin in her first match and a 13-7 win in her second match, before a loss in the finals against the #1 seed in her weight class.

D'Marion and Mackenzie both wrestle this weekend at Regionals, hoping to continue their journey to the MHSAA State Final meet. D'Marion will be in Cadillac and Mackenzie wrestles in Howell. Tickets for both events are available at gofan.co.

Each year from September through May, athletic directors representing each of the local high school athletic conferences bring names of nominees to be considered for the Kiwanis Club of Flint Student-Athlete of the Month. We are honored to announce that two Clio student-athletes were selected to represent the Flint Metro League Stars Division for the months of December and January.

As we are just past the halfway point of the school year, I'd like to remind everyone of a few important rules regarding exiting the school grounds.

First, unless it is the end of the school day, you MUST exit via the front door. This includes students heading to GCI for the day. Exiting through a side door to get to your car faster may seem convenient, but it can expose you and others to unnecessary risks. Consider what could happen if the door doesn't latch properly or if someone is waiting outside. These risks can be avoided by exiting through the front door, which is supervised by staff and has high foot traffic.

Second, the speed limit on Mustang Drive and the parking lots connected to it is 15 miles per hour. During arrival and departure times, you should reduce your speed to react to any potential hazards or pedestrians. Far too often, I see student drivers darting in and out of parking spots to leave quickly at the end of the day. I also see students walking in and out of the roadway and parking lot looking at their phones with headphones in. Both drivers and pedestrians need to be mindful of each other. Drivers, please slow down and take turns exiting the parking lot onto Mustang Drive. Students walking, please stay off your phone and pay attention to where you’re going.

These guidelines are in place to ensure the safety of all students, staff, and visitors at Clio High School/Clio Community High School. If staff members observe further violations, your parking pass may be suspended or revoked for the remainder of the school year.

Additionally, keep in mind that parking without a parking pass may result in your vehicle being towed at your expense.

As we reach the end of the first semester, now is the perfect time for educators and students to reflect on academic performance. With the completion of the first exams, grades have been finalized, and GPAs have been updated. Parents and guardians can view these updates on ParentVue, which provides valuable insight into student progress.

Attached is a chart that illustrates the frequency of GPAs among our student body. The chart reveals a diverse range of GPAs across different grades, highlighting both achievements and areas for improvement. Notably, there is a strong representation of students in the higher GPA ranges, particularly in the 12th grade. However, it is essential for all students to strive for academic excellence, and there are numerous resources available to support their journey.

We have several supports built in the students can utilize for academics.

  • Advisory Time: Daily Advisory sessions allow students to seek additional help and guidance from teachers. Students can request passes to meet with teachers for extra assistance several times a week.
  • After-School Tutoring: Available Monday through Thursday from 2:40 PM to 4:40 PM, providing targeted support in various subjects. For those living in the district, a late bus is available at 4:40 PM to help students get home after tutoring.
  • Varsity Tutors: Students can log in with their school Google account to access personalized online help for free.

With the right resources and support, every student can find their personal best. Let’s make the most of the second semester together!

Dear Clio High School Families,

I hope this newsletter finds you well and that you had a wonderful week! As we continue to push through the winter season, we wanted to share some important announcements and updates with you.

Important Announcements:

  • Spring Testing Preparation: Our High School is preparing for our Spring testing cycle, which will take place in April. Please take the time to ask your student about accessing Khan Academy. This is a free online application that provides standardized testing practice for all grades and content areas. The site provides practice tests, and feedback results, to provide testing experiences for your student. I encourage you to have your student visit the site to gain experiences with the test questioning process. Let's work together to help them succeed!

  • FAFSA Night: We are hoping that all parents of seniors can join us for our FAFSA Night on February 26th, from 5:30 - 7:00 pm in the CHS Media Center. The event will provide valuable information and guidance on the financial aid application process. If you were unable to attend, please reach out to our counseling department for assistance, as we are currently planning to have a second FAFSA event in the month of March.

Celebrations from the Week:

  • We would like to celebrate the hard work and achievements of our students this week. Whether it was a successful project completion, a great performance, or a kind act towards a classmate, we are proud of every student's efforts. Please take a moment to recognize and celebrate your child's accomplishments.

Additional Information:

  • Parent-Teacher Conferences: Save the dates! We will be holding parent-teacher conferences on Tuesday, March 11th, Wednesday, March 12th, and Thursday March 13th. Conference times will be announced and the “drop in” format will be in place. This will be a great opportunity to discuss your child's progress and address any concerns. Look out for more details and posted information coming soon.

I want to express our deepest gratitude for your continued partnership and support in your child's education. Our school community thrives because of families like yours. Together, we can create an enriching and empowering educational experience for all our students.

Thank you once again, and we wish you a fantastic week ahead! Go Clio! Join the Mustang Charge! #THEPLACETOBE!
