Principal's Message
Dear Landing Trail Families,
We were so happy to welcome our students, staff, and families back this week! Thank you for your patience, understanding, and support as we found our rhythm again. Our classrooms are once again filled with energy, laughter, and learning, and it feels wonderful to be moving forward together.
We finished off the week with a fun Halloween assembly, and we’re already looking ahead to next week as we kick off our PLACE and ASAP programs. These opportunities remind us of what makes our school community so special: students exploring their interests, connecting, and building confidence through hands-on learning.
As we continue into November, our focus will remain on consistency, connection, and celebrating growth in every classroom.
With gratitude,
Louise Loh, Principal
Vice Principal's Message
Welcome Back!
We’re so glad to have our students and staff back together at school. We recognize that the past few weeks have been challenging for many families, and we want to thank you for your patience, understanding, and support throughout this time. It’s been wonderful to see students reconnect with their classmates and teachers and quickly settle back into routines and learning.
Teaching of the Month: Wisdom
Our November focus is on Wisdom, specifically how we utilize our wisdom to make responsible choices. Throughout the month, classes will discuss the importance of thinking before acting, learning from experience, and making decisions that reflect care for ourselves, others, and our school community. We encourage families to continue these conversations at home as well.
Grade 4 Safety Patrol
Our Grade 4 Safety Patrol program is getting ready to launch! Training will take place on Tuesday, November 4th, and the patrol schedule will be shared by Friday, November 7th. Patrolers will officially begin when we return from November Break on the 17th. Thank you to our Grade 4 leaders for stepping up to keep our school community safe!
Have a wonderful day,
This Week's Unplugged Thought
The Power of Play
(From The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt)
Children today are spending far less time in person with friends than any previous generation. In-person play and connection are key ingredients for developing confidence, empathy, and resilience. Let’s help kids rediscover the joy of simply being together.
Sturgeon Public Schools is proud to be the first division in Alberta to partner with Unplugged Canada, a parent-led movement that encourages families to delay giving children personal smartphones until at least the age of 14. Waiting can have a profoundly positive impact on children’s mental health, relationships, and overall well-being.
November 3 & 4 Parent/Teacher Conversations
Parent/Teacher Conversations & Interviews will move forward as planned. Landing Trail's October 28th PTC have been rescheduled for November 3rd.
Teachers will share observations made before October 6th and initial observations of how students are readjusting upon return today (October 29th), celebrate early successes, and work with families to set meaningful goals for the remainder of the term. The focus of these conversations will be around reconnecting, collaborating, and planning as we settle back into regular routines.
To ensure these conversations are timely and authentic, teachers will be focusing on dialogue rather than written updates. Grades and comments will be updated at a later date, once students have had time to re-establish consistent learning routines. During your meeting, teachers will provide a well-rounded picture of your child's progress and next steps.
We are committed to empowered learning and healthy school communities. Families are invited to view the classroom materials and resources their child is engaging with during Parent-Teacher Conversations.
We look forward to partnering with you once again to support every child's growth and success. Your active participation in these conversations is important and greatly appreciated.
Did You Know?
Students are exploring Film and Piano during PLACE.
Film: Students explore storytelling and media by connecting Language Arts outcomes in narrative, sequencing, and visual communication with Fine Arts/Drama outcomes in expression, movement, and role-play. Through planning, acting, and creating short films, students develop key skills in creativity, communication, and collaboration that inspire curiosity and innovation for Future Readiness.
Piano (sponsored by the Alberta Music Foundation): Students develop Music outcomes in rhythm, melody, and performance while learning to read notation and appreciate musical form. Cross-curricular ties include Math (pattern, timing) and Language Arts (listening and interpretation). These experiences support Empowered Learning in fine arts and nurture confidence, perseverance, and pride in personal growth and achievement.

Optional Smudging
We are so encouraged by the positive response to our smudging opportunity! With such strong interest from students, we will now be dividing into two groups to accommodate the large numbers. We began on Monday, September 22nd. Students will have the opportunity to participate in optional smudging at the end of the day (around 2:45 pm) on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Smudging is a traditional Indigenous practice that uses the smoke of sacred medicines (such as sage, cedar, sweetgrass, or tobacco) for purification and reflection. Participation is always voluntary: families may choose to have their children participate, observe respectfully, or not take part at all.
This practice supports our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, helping students grow in respect, understanding, and a strong sense of belonging.
Parental permission is required for a child to participate (Click this link to give consent).
