CES Weekly Communicator
Issue #16: November 21, 2025
Principal Corner
Good afternoon, Chapelfield Families.
What a wonderfully busy and successful week we have had at Chapelfield Elementary! We closed out two major school-wide reading initiatives with great celebration and recognition: Read-A-Thon and One School, One Book!
We are so proud of the dedication and enthusiasm shown by our students during our Read-A-Thon and One School, One Book program! Reading is a foundational skill, and seeing the entire school embrace it so fully is truly inspiring.
A huge congratulations to our winning classrooms and students! The excitement was palpable as we announced the well-deserved awards. Some of the spectacular prizes from PTO included:
- A limo ride to Mod Pizza for our top-performing students!
- A fantastic popsicle party for classrooms!
- The chance for students and teachers to turn me into a giant ice cream sundae!
A heartfelt thank you to our amazing PTO! We are so grateful for their generous support, which allowed us to purchase t-shirts for every single student in the school. Itβs wonderful to see our Chapelfield spirit displayed so proudly!
We ended the week by focusing on important social-emotional skills during our Learning Community--Packs time. Our discussions centered on the vital concept of empathyβwhat it means to understand and share the feelings of others, and specifically, "what it is like to be in someone else's shoes."
To ensure all of our students feel valued and supported, our Student Council created a brief survey to gather input on whether all of our students feel a strong sense of belonging at Chapelfield. This information is crucial as we continue to build a positive and inclusive school environment for everyone. This was given during PACKS. Student Council's goal is for everyone to feel like they are part of the Chapelfield family.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support in all our school endeavors.
Have a restful and wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Nikki Miller

Ways you can support us at home:
Drop Off Reminders
Please help us out. Parents SHOULD NOT drive in the bus lane OR BLOCK the LANE during the following hours:
7:30-8:35 a.m. or 2:15-3:15 p.m.
Please park your car or use the carpool lane to drop off your children through Middle School West. Our job is to keep kids safe. Having parents drive in the bus lane or blocking the entrance is not safe and it blocks the buses.
We need to keep your kids safe and moving traffic as efficiently as possible. Thank you for your cooperation.
School Counseling Connection with Mrs. Jasin
This month in our classroom guidance lessons, all grade levels focused on the theme of gratitude and how noticing the good in our lives can help us shift our attention from whatβs going wrong to whatβs still going right.
Kindergarten & 1st Grade:
We read The Gratitude Jar and discussed how small moments can make a big difference in our day. Students shared ideas of what they might place in their own gratitude jars. We encourage families to try making a simple gratitude jar at home to continue the conversation.
2nd Grade:
Students explored the idea of having βgrateful hearts.β We talked about how practicing gratitude can help us switch our thinking when weβre stuck on something frustrating or disappointing. Students identified people, places, and moments theyβre thankful for.
3rd Grade:
Our third graders created gratitude webs and listened to A Little Thankful Spot. We also introduced the skills of noticing, appreciating, and expressing gratitudeβthree simple ways to build a habit of thankfulness.
4th Grade:
Students learned how gratitude strengthens relationships and practiced expressing it by writing thank you cards to someone who has made a positive impact in their lives.
5th Grade:
We discussed how gratitude can help us βtip the scaleβ when weβre feeling disappointed or overwhelmed. Students completed a fun Gratitude AβZ challenge, identifying something theyβre thankful for for each letter of the alphabet. Like 3rd and 4th grade, we also focused on how to notice, appreciate, and express gratitude in everyday life.
We loved hearing students share what theyβre grateful for this month and seeing how each grade connected with the concept in meaningful ways. Thanks for your continued support as we build these social-emotional skills together!
Best,
Mrs. Jasin

Guys with Ties and Girls with Pearls
Weβre excited to announce the start of our Guys with Ties and Girls with Pearls programs for all third-grade students--thank to our PTO for sponsoring this program as well as CES school! These groups focus on building leadership, kindness, confidence, and respect through fun activities and discussions. Students will learn what it means to be positive role models at school and in the community. You can learn more about the programs at https://www.gobeyondthegame.org/. Mrs. Jasin and Mr. Scheibeck will be the facilitators for the program at the school.
We canβt wait to see our third graders shine as they practice being their best selves! π

Learning in the Library with Mrs. Long
We have been working hard to learn about some of the celebrations in November. First we learned about Veteranβs Day. The students learned about the history of Veterans Day, jobs in the military, and sacrifices that military people make when they serve. Kindergarten, First, and Second grade each read a different nonfiction book about Veterans Day and learned about the jobs in the military. Third and Fourth Grade read The Wall and learned about the Vietnam Memorial in Washington DC. Fifth Grade read Twenty-One Steps and watched a short news story about the sentinels of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Students in grades 2 - 5 also explored a digital choice board to learn more about Veterans Day and the military.
Last week we read books to celebrate Native American Heritage Month. Kindergarten read Fry Bread and discussed family traditions and the food associated with them. First grade read Powwow Day, discussed what happens at a powwow, and learned to dance the Jingle Dance. Second grade listened to We Are Grateful Otsaliheliga, discussed celebrations of gratitude, and learned to say several Cherokee words.Third grade read Stitches of Tradition and learned about how clothing is used in family traditions. Fourth grade read We Are Water Protectors, discussed the connection Native Americans feel with nature, and briefly discussed the Dakota Access Pipeline. Fifth grade read Chester Nez and the Unbreakable Code, learned about the Navajo Code Talkers of WWII, watched a part of a video interview with Chester Nez, and discussed the difference between primary and secondary sources. Students in grades 2 - 5 also explored a digital choice board about Native American Nations, myths and legends, and about the Navajo Code Talkers.
Third grade students are finishing up their ocean animal research projects and have learned how to use different resources on INFOhio to research their topic, and then how to use Google Slides to share the information. They have learned how to change the background of the slides and add images and videos.
The other grades are currently reading books about Thanksgiving and pumpkins. Kindergarten and First grade students read Bear Says Thanks, and discussed the things we are thankful for, and Little Kids Table, and built a table to hold 5 food items. Second grade students read A Bold Pumpkin Plan and designed their own bold pumpkin houses, as well as the book The Very Last Leaf. Fourth and Fifth grade read Balloons Over Broadway and are currently building βballoonsβ to attach to the Ozobot robot handlers. They will then code the Ozobots to follow the same path on a map that the real Macyβs Thanksgiving Day Parade follows.
Keep reading with your students and encouraging their love of books!!!
Cold Weather Reminder
Please make sure students are dressed warmly for recess as the weather gets colder. We will be outside for recess unless the temperature falls below 17 degrees.
If you need coats, hats, or gloves, please reach out to the front office or Mrs. Jasin.
Attendance
Did You Know?
Missing two days per month - excused or unexcused - can add up to a child being considered chronically absent.
Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more (approximately 18 days) during a school year, regardless if the absence is coded excused or unexcused!
Parent Phone calls to change transportation
The front office is a busy place the last 30 minutes of school. We ask that parents NOT CALL to make transportation changes after 2 p.m. Please make sure students know your plan of pick up before they come to school.

Support our School
Chapelfield sure knows how to "top off" a great Read-A-Thon! First and foremost, we'd like to thank the MANY parents, guardians and loved ones who helped their Chapelfield students read, participate in fun read-a-thon activities, and raise funds in our biggest annual fundraiser. With your help, we were able to raise $17,091 to support critical programs benefitting the students, teachers and school community throughout the year. A special thank you goes to Mrs. Long, who championed our special βOne School, One Bookβ program, bringing the Wild Robot to each of our homes this fall.
This week we celebrated with a school-wide assembly, acknowledging our fundraising leaders and our readers! Fun prizes for our students included a limo ride to a special lunch, popsicle parties, an exclusive "escape room" experience and last but certainly not least, the opportunity to turn Mrs. Miller into a sundae (check out our classroom winner teachers putting the "cherry on top" - they did not hold back!). All Chapelfield students received a read-a-thon t-shirt to celebrate a special month of reading. We are so grateful to make these special Chapelfield memories!
5th grade Committee

The cards cost $20 each, and a portion of every card sold supports our 5th grade class. The sale will run through November 21, and cards will be delivered before the holidays!
