Nestling into the School Year
Parents!
As we nestle into the school year, it’s time for our students to get into gear and continue building strong academic and behavioral habits! We are asking for your continued partnership in helping your child make the most of each school day.
Please encourage your child to be at school every day, arrive ready to learn, and follow classroom and school procedures and expectations. Consistent attendance, a positive attitude, and responsible behavior all play an important role in student success.
Thank you for partnering with us as we work together to help every Miller student Saddle Up for Success.

For the month of October, our character trait is conflict resolution. When we teach kids the tools to deal with disagreements and misunderstandings we are giving them a core life skill to be successful in school and in life. Ways that you can work on conflict resolution at home is letting children express how they feel without blame and practice active listening.
Our consequence referrals also began last week. Please encourage your child to make good choices at school and demonstrate leadership. As a reminder, students will not be able to participate in our end of trimester rewards for discipline referrals.

School Immunization Deadline is 10-09-2026
All students must be vaccinated with the required Indiana school immunizations (IC 20-
34-4-5) or be able to show proof of an appointment. Those students that are compliant will be excluded from school starting on 10-09-26. Notices have been sent home for those students that are not compliant.
Vision and Hearing Screening
This month I will be conducting vision and hearing screening which is required by the state of Indiana. Vision is screened in first and third grade and for any student suspected of having difficulty with vision. Hearing will be screened in first and fourth grade. Referrals will be sent home with students who do not pass screening. The referrals must be completed by a doctor and returned to the school nurse. Vision screening does not replace a complete eye examination by an ophthalmologist or optometrist.
Help Prevent the Spread of Illness at Miller School.
The start of fall usually means the start of flu season and the spreading of germs around school. You can play an important role in helping your child have a healthy place to learn. Here are some ways you can help our school stop the spread of germs:
● Know when your child is well enough to go to school and when they should stay home because of their symptoms. Some reasons to have your child stay home include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and respiratory symptoms that are getting worse or not improving.
● Encourage your child to practice healthy habits, like washing their hands often and covering their mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing.
● Make sure your child goes for their yearly check-ups and gets the recommended routine vaccines they need. This helps keep your child healthy and in class by reducing the spread of germs in school and making sickness shorter and milder.

October is a busy month for Miller Elementary. It’s Fire Prevention month, Anti-bullying month and we continue to celebrate Hispanic Heritage month. We are also super excited about our 1st Family Fall Festival on Friday October 9th starting at 5:00pm. We hope to see our Miller families enjoying a fun evening out. I am, of course, in charge of our Anti-Bullying week’s activities. We will be celebrating Ant-Bullying week October 12th -October 16th . During that week I will be in each of the classrooms presenting an Anti-bullying program called Child Safety Matters which will include a Parent Information sheet to be sent home. Your child will receive the info sheet when I come into their class. Please look for this sheet and ask your child about what we talked about. One activity I am hoping we all participate in is our Unity Day on Wednesday October 14th where all the schools in Merrillville will be wearing orange to show solidarity. We all stand against Bullying and will wear orange on the 14th of October. Hope you will join too!!!
