🎨 Design Contest for the Newsletter Title!

Are you interested in creating a new design for our garden newsletter title? I plan to publish newsletters to share our garden activities throughout the year. We will hold a new design contest for it.

Last year, " Lee Garden gurus" by Pranada P5 won the contest, and her design has been used for our newsletter, as you can see above. A new design is wanted for this school year.

Please see the instruction below if you are interested in the contest. We will choose the best one, and I will put it in every garden newsletter. I appreciate designs that represent well the culture of our school and garden!

Instructions:

  • Draw your design of the garden newsletter title in Landscape, not in Portrait on IPad
  • Include your First name, House, and grade on the design
  • Go to Schoology > Courses > Lee Elementary: All Students (yellow icon)
  • Click Lee Garden
  • Click New Design Contest
  • Click Add Media on the top right and submit your work.

😊Your design must be ORIGINAL. You can't copy or trace other people's work as a part or as a whole. I want to see YOUR creativity.

The due date is 1/17.

Thank you for your participation!

πŸ§‘β€πŸŒΎπŸ¨ Farmer's Market & Smoothie Sale

Thank you to all who supported the Farmer's Market & Smoothie Ice Cream sales!

I appreciate the PA/AL learners' excellent job preparing the market, welcoming people, explaining to the customers, and doing cashier at the Farmer's Market on 12/06!

The sales were a great success! We earned $115 at the Farmer's Market and $151 at the smoothie sale. They were a fundraiser to buy an ice cream maker ($87), and we had already ordered it! I can't wait to explore with you the most delicious & healthy frozen dessert using our harvest!

PA/AL learners discussed how we could use the sales money for our school and community. I was impressed with their great ideas on what we can do for others. The ideas include donating food to Metrocrest, buying stuff for the school, saving it for future use, and donating to the kids with cancer (We will order a piggy bank ($20) for this project)!

Do you have any ideas about using the sales money for our school and community?

PA/AL learners planted seeds in self-water pots, observed and took a picture of the plants every day, transplanted them in the garden, and sold them at the farmer's market.

The pictures are taken by the PA learners and me.

The ice cream was made from kale & mint (from our garden), milk, apple juice, sugar, and heavy whipping cream.

🌱 From Seed to Harvest

In September, we prepared the soil and planted many seeds, such as radishes, beets, carrots, and transplants, such as broccoli, kohlrabi, and kale. We tasted them when they were ready to harvest in November and December!

Do you know how many days it takes from seed to harvest? 30 days for radishes and 65 days for carrots! It takes time to grow vegetables. Plants grow little by little in the beginning. Some days are sunny and hot, and others are cloudy, rainy, or even stormy, and they keep growing. Plants have a story of their life like you.

When you eat vegetables, let's think about their stories. It might be fun, and I hope you appreciate the food you eat.

πŸ›πŸ¦‹ Monarch Butterfly Garden by 3rd Graders

Did you know that the 3rd graders made a Monarch garden? They planted native milkweed and native nectar plants near the lower graders' playground from late October to early November. Thank you for planting, 3rd graders!!

The garden will provide Monarchs with food and habitat to help their migration from Mexico to Canada and back to Mexico.

The 3rd graders are researching Monarchs and will share what they learned with the whole school and community. We will also get the Monarch Waystation certification from Monarch Watch soon!

Planting milkweed & nectar plants by the 3rd graders from 10/28 to 11/03

Thank you, Native Plant Society of Texas, for the Bring Back the Monarchs to Texas grant to buy the native plants!

RJL Monarch Waystation Project by 3rd graders

Thank you, Mrs. Shaner, for the excellent learning materials on Monarch butterflies and their conservation!

All the photos of the butterflies are taken in our flower garden next to the vegetable beds this year. Can you identify all of them? I hope our new Monarch garden attracts many butterflies like this. It will benefit not only Monarchs but also many other pollinators.

Thank you to the teachers for their support for our garden activities!
