Family Newsletter

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We made it to the third week of school and have taken the momentum of students coming to school renewed of energy and excited to make a difference. This week all students in grades Kinder-5th will be tested to assess their math and reading current skills. This year the district has adopted iReady to be our testing environment. The results of these tests are a critical component for planning daily instruction as data collected after testing will show the types of interventions our students need.

  • Today, all students took the math test
  • Wednesday, they will be taking the reading test
  • Thursday, dual language students will take an additional reading test in English or Spanish language.

Please see the schedule chart below. We kindly ask you to please send your students to school to avoid any make up testing later this week. Ensure they also have a good night sleep and provide them with lots of motivation upon taking the test. Thank you for your support.

Title I Funds Presentation

We will have two Parent presentations on how Title Funds are spend in schools. The first presentation will be on Wednesday, at 5:00 pm. The second presentation is scheduled for Thursday, at 8:30 am, both presentations will be held in the school library. We'll love to see you then!

Please see flyers below.

Intramurals

We are excited to announce that Dr. Green Elementary will be participating once again in the district sponsored campus intramurals for students in grades 3-5. Permission slips are being sent out this week. Practices will be held after school starting on Monday, August 24 from 3:30 pm to 4:15 pm. Third grade students will be practicing once a week on Mondays. Fourth and fifth grade students will be practicing twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please check with your children for permission slips. See the flyer with sport categories and dates below.

Working Together for Student Success

We recognize that, in order for our children to be successful in school, they need support from both home and school. We know that a strong partnership with you can make a meaningful difference in your child’s education. As partners, we share the responsibility for our children’s success, and we want you to know that we will do our very best to fulfill our responsibilities and support your children every step of the way.

We ask that you continue to guide and support your children’s learning by ensuring that:

  • They attend school every day and arrive on time at 8:00 a.m.
  • They complete all homework assignments given by their teachers.
  • They read every day to develop a love of reading and strengthen their literacy skills. You can also help them practice math skills during everyday activities, such as shopping trips.
  • They share their school experiences with you so that you remain informed about their school life.
  • They let you know when they need additional support in any subject or area.
  • They understand that you believe in them and expect them to succeed in school.

Morning and Afternoon Traffic Safety

For the safety of both children and adults, we ask that everyone please follow all traffic and safety procedures when parking in the street or parking lot, dropping off and picking up students, using crosswalks, and walking within the parking lot.

Please remain aware of your surroundings at all times and keep your children within your reach or hold their hands when walking through the parking areas.

Thank you for your cooperation and continued support in helping us keep our students, families, and staff safe.

Accessing our School and School Grounds

Traffic:

Student drop off lane for parents to drop off students is accessible for students in grades 1-5. For students PreK and Kinder we recommend parents to park and walk your children to the building. A school personnel will be greeting students and helping out parents at the drop off area. One custodian will be securing and supervising the teachers’ access lane. Teachers will have access to the parking lot by displaying the Staff Parking green card.

Student are dropped off at the school front doors where they are greeted by school personnel. The students are either send to the cafeteria (Montessori students, PreK3 and PreK4 and SPED students) or outside to the blacktop to line up-students in grades Kinder to 5th.

Blacktop:

Two PE Coaches and the Campus Monitor will be outside assisting parents and students as well as monitoring safety.

Classrooms:

Teachers pick up students from the blacktop at 8:00 am

Lunch Periods: 11:00-12:30 Teachers take students to recess, outside monitors will bring students to the cafeteria for lunch. Teachers pick up students from the cafeteria adhering to the set schedule. Please see that recess/lunch schedule below.

DISMISSAL @ 3:25 PM

Buses/Daycare:

  • Bus students will be dismissed by teachers upon listening to an all call by the office at 3:23pm.

  • All students will be wearing a bus tag according to the bus or daycare vans they are riding. Students in PreK, Kinder and 1st grade will be picked up by our campus clerk and guide them to the cafeteria for bus boarding. Grades 2-5 will walk to the cafeteria and will be received by 2 monitors. Paraprofessionals will be securing the bus area in the cafeteria ensuring that every student on the list rides the bus/daycare vans. Paraprofessionals will account for every student by checking off students’ names as they board the vehicles.

Dismissal Areas:

All non-bus or daycare students will be dismissed from the front of the school by their teachers. Each grade level has an assigned waiting area for parents. Any student attending the after school extended daycare will be gathered at the Community Room.

Afterschool Traffic:

The drop off area will be accessible for students pick up. We encourage only students in Grades 1-5 to use the drop off area. PreK-Kinder parents will park and walk to pick up their children. Pre-determined teacher volunteers, PE Coaches work the traffic flow and crosswalks.

Pets:

Here at Dr. Green, we love pets, I have myself a lovely schnauzer at home; however, by city and district policy no pets are allowed in all our school grounds unless you are using the pick up lane and the pet is inside the car. This policy has been established for many years for the safety of both adults and children. We thank you for adhering to this important policy.

Drop Off Zone Drop Off Zone

User uploaded image

Drop off zone will be open every day in the morning and at dismissal. For the safety of all students and adults, we will only open one lane as in previous years. The second lane is for faculty and staff entrance to the parking lot. We recommend that the drop off zone is used for students in grades 1-5. Students in grade PreK and Kinder require more time due to car seats and additional personal supplies. In order to efficiently and timely expedite the drop offs, we ask that parents and students are ready to get off the car, including a kiss and a hug at home. Please do not park in faculty parking spaces-the first three rows or double park. We appreciate your understanding.

Extremely important! Please do not park in the yellow line adjacent to the sidewalk. Parking in this area blocks vehicles parked in the last row.

Transportation Transportation

Please notify your children teacher and office staff if your children will be riding the school bus. Transportation is provided only to those students whose parent signed a transportation request form and this was approved by the school office. Please call our office at (915) 236-3000 to verify if you meet transportation eligibility criteria.

Dear Parents and Families,

Welcome to the 3rd week of school! We hope everyone is settling into a wonderful school year. We are excited to continue supporting our students as they grow and strengthen their skills in Reading and Math.

This week, students are completing their I-Ready BOY diagnostic assessments. At the end of the week, we will carefully review and analyze the assessment data to identify students who may benefit from additional academic support. Students who score at 30% and below will be considered for targeted Reading and/or Math intervention.

If your child is selected for intervention, please be on the lookout for an Intervention Letter coming home. We ask that you review, sign, and return the letter as soon as possible. We look forward to providing the appropriate support for your child. Please feel to reach out with any questions you may have.

Our goal is to use assessment data to meet each student where they are and provide the instruction and support they need to be successful. Thank you for partnering with us and supporting your child's learning journey!

Here's to a fantastic third week of learning and growth!

With appreciation,

Your Math & Reading Interventionists

I am Mr. Zarate, the Instructional Coach for Dr. Green Elementary. I am excited to once again be a part of the Hawks family!

I will be posting some fun activities to do with your children at home. I will post 1 math and 1 reading activity and occasionally post a science experiment to do with everyday household items.

Reading:

Try to get a line on your Fall Bingo card, or better yet, fill out the entire card. I will send out a paper copy with the students. Please write the title of the book read for each square. Return it for a small prize!

Math:

Engage elementary students with hands-on fall family math activities using natural outdoor objects like leaves, pinecones, and pumpkins. These simple projects build counting, sorting, measuring, and geometry skills through playful autumn themes.

Nature Counting and Sorting

  • Leaf Estimation: Gather a handful of leaves. Guess how many you have, then count them to check your work.

  • Pinecone Patterns: Line up pinecones, acorns, and small stones in repeating color or size patterns (like big, small, big, small).

  • Pumpkin Seed Grouping: Clean out a small pumpkin. Count the seeds by putting

  • them into piles of ten

Measurement and Geometry

  • Twig Numerals: Break twigs into short pieces. Use them to build numbers or geometric shapes like triangles and squares.

  • Tree Trunk Measure: Wrap a string around a local tree trunk. Cut the string to match the size, then use a ruler to measure the string length in inches.

  • Apple Weigh-In: Weigh different apples on a kitchen scale. Order them from lightest to heaviest.

Kitchen and Holiday Math

  • Recipe Fractions: Double or cut a simple autumn recipe in half using measuring cups.

  • Candy Corn Probabilities: Sort a small pile of candy corn by color. Predict which color you will pull out of a bag with your eyes closed.
