August 13, 2026

Dear Families,

Welcome to the 2026-2027 school year.

During our Welcome Back staff huddle on Wednesday, August 5, I had the opportunity to share my vision for SkyView over the next five years. I titled the session “Factory Reset,” which felt especially fitting as we enter a DCSD Charter Renewal year. This summer, I had the privilege of completing our charter renewal application, a process that required me to reflect deeply on where we have been, who we are today, and where we want to go as a school community.

We are an incredibly blessed school. The staff and faculty of this building work tirelessly to ensure an excellent, holistic education for our students. The fruit of their labor translates into a modified application because we are a high performing school in all facets of our program. If you are interested in hearing more about charter renewal, join the SVA Board of Education meeting via Zoom next Wednesday, August 18th at 5 PM.

As we embark on a new school year and the next 5 years of excellence, I thought it would be a good time to share the top 10 things I have learned over the past 8 years in leadership. My hope is that these lessons will resonate with you, and you will find take aways for your journey in our community.

  1. Judging a situation from the outside looking in can create confirmation bias. Have you ever witnessed a toddler meltdown in public? Have you ever observed a student in your child’s class struggle with attention? Did you pause today during carline after a student melted down and think, “Wow, that child has issues?” Have you ever filled a Thursday folder, observed the score on a spelling test, and thought, “Glad that’s not MY child.”? Have you ever listened to the stories from your child as they retell their day and thought, is anyone doing anything about that student? Have you ever stopped and imagined life through THAT family’s lens and reached out to support them? Have you ever contemplated the heartbreaking conversations that are taking place with teachers and administration? Have you ever reflected on the devastation they battle as they seek ways to help their child?

  2. Students need praise even if they earn an A. In my early years of teaching, I never praised my students for their grades. I never saw the need. If they earned an A, I believed the satisfaction of success should have been enough. Boy. Was. I. Wrong. Remember that your student needs praise for their efforts.

  3. Students need you to believe in them. Before Maddy was born, I functioned in delusion. I expected my students to achieve academic success with ease. I was, after all, providing a well-structured learning environment, and my lessons followed the 5 dynamics of teaching. Each one included demonstration, guided practice, and independent practice. They were textbook lessons. Then, Maddy blessed our lives. She was anything but a textbook student. I realized, as I watched her battles, how many students my lack of flexibility impacted. I realized over the nights of tears with Maddy, that I likely broke the hearts of many of my struggling students. It is gut-wrenching to ponder. After watching Maddy battle to succeed and be ignored by many teachers, I vowed that if I ever reentered the world of education, I would always see the best in my students. They would know without question that they mattered. Believe in your child even when they fail a test or score “Approaching” on a standardized test. Believe in them even when they make embarrassing, disruptive, or harmful decisions. It is that belief that brings back their hope and their desire to try again.

  4. When a reaction doesn’t match the situation, you need to ask why. When your child battles emotional outbursts or behaves in a manner drastically different from their day-to-day, ask why. There is always a why. Seek to understand. Generally speaking, the why reveals some kind of fear, worry, or pain.

  5. At one point or another, your child will be that child. Don’t judge a parent from the outside looking in. You don’t know their story. You haven’t walked their journey.

  6. Learning to write a well-developed thesis demonstrates growth, but so do countless other average, daily wins. Celebrate the growth observed in a completed planner or a week that homework was only forgotten 2 of 5 days.

  7. The student who battles being the “bully” more often than not navigates unthinkable pain, heartbreak, or abuse. Empower your child to speak into them as only a child can.

  8. Sometimes homework has to be ignored for a heart-to-heart talk. Yes. They might get a zero. Yes. Their grade might drop. That’s OK. It’s one night. Grades can be rebounded. But gaining insight into the heart and mind of your child is priceless.

  9. Expecting immediate success is unrealistic. I would actually assert it’s tragic. A butterfly has to struggle to emerge from the cocoon, or it will die because it lacks the strength to fly.

  10. You get the lowest level of behavior, you model. I learned this the hard way when Hunter was 2 years old. I forgot to leave my mom the car seat. Suffice it to say my son picked up on and used correctly a certain expletive frowned upon in most circles. When asked where he learned such a word, my son proudly proclaimed my guilt. Suffice it to say I was not too old to be disciplined by my mother. She quickly and passionately reminded me that day that no child of hers would cause her grandchildren to stumble.

Our SkyView vision and mission are admirable, to be sure. As we embark on the next 5 years of a new renewal cycle, I encourage all of us to contribute in a positive way to our community. Let’s collaborate together to put hands and feet to life-long learning and honorable leadership. Let’s continuously ask ourselves the following questions. Are we encouraging our students to sit with hurting? Or to walk alongside the wounded? Are we encouraging them to strive for excellence? Or to learn from failure?

Honored to Serve You All,

Janet Worley

Inclement Weather & Dismissal Procedures

As an unpredictable weather season approaches, we want to share what families can expect when inclement weather impacts dismissal, outdoor activities, delays, or school closures.

Inclement Weather Dismissal

Inclement weather decisions at SkyView Academy are based on current conditions and established safety thresholds. Lightning is one of the primary factors in determining when inclement weather protocols are activated. Even if skies appear clear or sunny, any lightning strike within a 10-mile radius requires us to implement safety protocols. Inclement weather procedures may also be activated for rain, snow, severe weather, or a “feels like” temperature of 22°F or below.

However, from time to time, there may be a need to implement Inclement Weather Dismissal for another matter. If a matter at school requires an alternative pickup pattern, the administration will communicate the decision. We respectfully remind you that the safety of the students, staff, and faculty remains the priority during these events. We will share communication with the community as soon as we are able.

SkyView Academy uses the Perry Weather system, a professional weather-monitoring and lightning-detection platform that tracks local conditions in real time. The system provides immediate alerts when lightning or severe weather is detected nearby, allowing staff to quickly pause outdoor activities and ensure the safety of students, staff, and visitors. View our live weather system.

When inclement weather protocols are in effect during dismissal, we work diligently to make the safest decisions for our students. We appreciate families’ patience and cooperation as dismissal procedures may need to be adjusted or delayed based on changing conditions.

Weather Delays & School Closures

SVA follows the Douglas County School District (DCSD) for weather-related delays and closures.

For the most up-to-date information, please visit the DCSD Weather Delays & Closures page. SVA will also communicate applicable weather updates through text message, email, and our website.

A Note for Our Commuter Families

As a commuter school, SVA relies on the DCSD Snow Team to monitor road and weather conditions. Because our students travel from many different areas, conditions can vary significantly from one family's route to another.

If SVA is open but you believe conditions in your area make travel unsafe, your child’s absence will be excused per district and state policy. Please follow our regular attendance protocols and notify the school of your decision.

Your child’s safety is our top priority. Thank you for your understanding, patience, and flexibility as we navigate changing Colorado weather conditions together.

Traffic and Carline

Lockheed:

  • Lockheed works diligently to be collaborative neighbors.

  • We respectfully expect our community to work in collaboration with them as well.

  • SVA students may not sit at the picnic tables located in front of the Lockheed building.

  • Lockheed will permit the use of their parking lot during carline with the following understanding:

    • Cars must enter the lot nearest Walmart and travel parallel to Business Center until they reach the last parking aisle closest to SVA.

    • Cars must follow the same pattern to exit the Lockheed parking lot.

    • Car may not access the back of their building. One of our carline cars sped through the back of their facility and nearly hit a Lockheed employee.

    • Cars may not cut through the main lot.

  • We will work in partnership with Lockheed and Deputy Walker to ensure safety remains the priority of our community.

AM Entrance:

  • Safety remains our top priority.

  • Deputy Walker monitors the North Entrance from 7:40 AM to 8:00 AM.

  • Deputy Walker monitors the East Entrance from 8:00 AM to 8:30 AM.

  • MS/HS Students enter the building at the North Entrance from 7:40 AM to 8:00 AM.

  • MS/HS Students arriving at 8 AM or later will enter the building from the East Entrance.

AM/PM Carline Reminders:

  • Please pull all the way forward to close all available space.

  • Please remain off your cell phone while in carline.

  • Please turn your signal on so our traffic attendant knows you are ready to pull out.

  • PM CARLINE VIDEO

PM Parent Walkers:

  • We recognize some families prefer to greet their students in person. We desire to work collaboratively with our community.

  • Parent walkers may cross the crosswalk after 3:45 PM to pick up their students from their grade level line.

  • Our lower-grade students become overwhelmed by the crowd at the door. Our priority as adults needs to be the safety of our students.

  • Crossing after the 3:45 PM time frame ensures the Hawks Out Students are safely at their grade level section.

  • Crossing after the 3:45 PM time frame allows our classes to arrive at the grade level waiting area after All Call is announced.

Senior Reserved Parking Spots

These will be available via MySchoolBucks in the school store. The spots should be available in the school store when registration opens. However, all student drivers must have a parking permit.

  • Please fill out the Student Parking Registration form with your car information (required for either option)

  • Please fill out the Reserved Parking Spot Agreement

  • All designs must be submitted to Mrs. Dove by Wednesday, September 9th, for approval.

Senior Sunrise

Saturday, September 12, 2026, on the large turf, from 5:45 am to 7:00 am. Students can bring blankets and games, such as spike ball.

Senior Painting of Reserved Spots

Saturday, September 12, 2026, from 8 am to 11:00 am - students are responsible for bringing their own paint and painting supplies. In the past, students have brought inexpensive rollers and paint brushes that can be discarded at the end of painting. Students have used different types of paint, and they all seem to hold up the same. A suggestion would be to go to a local paint or hardware store and ask the paint department. Special paint, UV paint, can also be purchased from Amazon, along with sealants.

More senior information.
