Retirement? Me? No way! That’s exactly what I thought when my life’s plan changed recently. Have you ever had that moment when you make a decision, then wonder if you made the right decision? Yes, I questioned my decision to retire. But guess what? God has opened so many doors for me in retirement, it’s hard not to see them!
Wesley UMC is one of those open doors. I am so blessed to be called here as your interim pastor until the Bishop and Council find the right person to be appointed here as your permanent pastor in the near future. I pray for you. I pray God will guide the Bishop and Council in their discernment and decisions for the next incoming pastor. I pray that during this time together, we journey as one to continue Wesley United Methodist Church’s vision for this church family, community and beyond.
It takes ALL of us serving together to make the vision happen: young and old. Just because we age doesn’t mean our service to God ends. It may change but never ends. It’s called Teamwork. And as we all know, sometimes teams can bump heads and disagree and that’s okay. As long as we do everything in love – anything can happen. There will be times when we will need to agree to disagree. There will be times of compromise. But we must never forget that everything we do, we do for God’s glory only.
So here we go. Let’s get going! Let’s do good; do no harm; and stay in love with God. Are you ready?

Community Grow, Grow, Grows!
They say that absence may make the heart grow fonder- and yes in some cases that can motivate us to action or to cause us to remain quiet and isolated-but remember???
And yet we know that there is work to do and summer is the perfect time to see that growth taking place, and we see is happening ever before us.
Look around. No, really! Look around you! There are 2 raised garden beds donated by GroundWorks Connect, the plants were also donated by partnerships through GroundWorks Connect staff and neighbors in the Sioux Falls area. Take note of what is growing there. God is at work! Listen to the din in the hallway on any given Sunday and see what is taking place! Growth is sprouting up all around you and GroundWorks Connect is amid it all!
Thanks to the leadership and the grace of your pastoral staff, GroundWorks Connect remains with office capabilities complete with opportunities to continue partnering with Wesley UMC on additional teaching garden builds. We know that one of your members drives a mean skid steer when soil and compost are involved for an elementary school! Wesley was onsite at Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School to assist in building and building 6 teaching gardens in June. The joy on the children’s faces was a perfect reminder of why we do what we do.
Wesley UMC, you have helped Lifescape Pathways to Success students find their way to sinking their hands in the soil. Students who would normally never feel the cool of those granules were filled with awe and wonder at the creation beneath their fingers. You have been part of that growth.
As my husband, the wonderful, Pastor Duane Coates, signs off to me when we write or speak, Always Remember, Never Forget.
Wesley, Always Remember and Never Forget you are a community steeped in Grow Grow, Growth! And GroundWorks Connect is here for the ride!

Christmas Shoe Boxes
Spirit Lake Ministry Center coordinates distribution of Shoebox Christmas gifts to over 6,000 children across the reservations of North Dakota, South Dakota and into Minnesota.
So, what is included in the shoe boxes? To start, wrap the bottom and top of a shoebox separately with Christmas gift wrapping paper. Add items that you purchased into the box. If you have children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews, ask them what they would like for Christmas. Add that, a few more smaller gifts, some candy, a winter hat, mittens or gloves, place a rubber band around the box and then the top. No bows. They don’t stack in the truck. Label the box with the age group and gender of the child on top of the box. Use the following age groups when you create your label: infant, toddler, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12, 13 and up.
I don’t have a date yet as to when the boxes will be distributed. The distribution date is usually in early November. I know that seems like a while in the future, but it will be here before we know it and now is the time to start looking for bargains.
If you have any empty shoe boxes, bring them to the church and we will wrap them with Christmas wrap and have them ready for all of you to fill with presents by October.

United Women in Faith
63 women and men attended Mission u in Mitchell at DWU July 11-13. There were also 36 women and men attending Mission u in Jamestown, ND on July 17-19. I lead one of the studies on Practicing Hope at both sites. We had some lively discussions on Hope.
I shared stories about the journey Wesley has been on the last two years at both sites. While Wesley is still a work in progress, we are already living Hope every day as we serve the neighborhood around our church. I had people approach me to ask how they might be able to tap into some of Wesley’s positive vibe. There are several churches around the conference who were impacted by the disaffiliation process, so, there are a lot of churches who are trying to find a way to move beyond the pain and grief that resulted from the disaffiliation process.
UWFaith has a district meeting coming up on September 13 at First UMC in Mitchell from 9:30am to 2:30pm. UWF also has a conference meeting coming up on October 3-4 in Rapid City. If anyone would like to go, contact Dawn Armstrong (605-988-7023).

Wesley Neighborhood Outreach News
Whittier Neighborhood Outreach
The third Whittier Neighborhood clean-up event is in the books. Just over 1,000 pounds of trash was hauled away. Thanks to the fire department and the St. Francis House volunteers everything went smoothly. We are blessed.
Whittier Residents Assn
- The Whittier Association hosted the city-wide neighborhood leaders' event on July 24th. Many city leaders were present, and we were able to address our questions to the right people. Many went away with a renewed sense of community and empowerment. Thanks to Wesley for hosting this event.
- Everyone is invited on August 5th at 5:30pm in Meldrum Park
- The next big effort we will be trying our hand at is the National Night Out event scheduled for August 5th. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy. Our Association President and officers have been working hard to provide an evening of fun and entertainment.
- Remember our motto is- if you live, work, play or pray in this area- YOU are our neighbor.
- Come eat, enjoy many activities, visit and help build community. We will be at Meldrum Park from 5:30-8:00pm. Bring a lawn chair
- If you would like to get involved and help with this exciting event. Contact Mary P. 605-254-6607
ENZYMES EXPLAINED (Part 1)
(Excerpts from Daryl Austin USA TODAY)
Imagine trying to bake a cake without heat. You’ve got all the ingredients, but nothing is happening. That’s what your body would be like without enzymes: potential but no action. These microscopic marvels turn raw materials into energy and are the invisible helpers working behind the scenes for every breath you take, every bite you chew and every step you walk. In fact, without enzymes, your cells would simply stop functioning. h “No living organisms on earth can survive without enzymes,” says Dave Farina, a science educator and founder of Professor Dave Explains. “We should be happy we have them, or we would not exist.”
Enzymes are specialized proteins that speed up chemical reactions inside a living organism.
And enzymes have the added benefit of not being consumed or used up in the process of building or sustaining life. This means they can be reused over and over again.
Enzymes are also highly specific, with each typically acting on a specific molecule or type of action. In other words, they have unique shapes that fit their target molecules similar to how each key fits a unique lock.
