BUSD Community Engagement Team Collaborated with BEF on their 2nd. Toy Drive
Juliana Hesselgesser Beautiful Annual Toy Drive Project
The BUSD Community Engagement Initiative, inspired by the vision of a local BE mom, achieved remarkable success through collaboration and heartfelt service. Partnering with Juliana Hesselgesser for her 2nd annual toy drive, the initiative united local businesses like The Wave on Wave Hair Salon, Carol Downing, and the Bonsall Women's Club in a shared mission to support the community. BHS student volunteers demonstrated their dedication by investing hours in wrapping toys and assisting parents in transporting them, fostering a culture of empathy and teamwork. This Saturday morning event exemplified how community members can come together to make a positive impact, leaving a lasting impression of generosity and unity during the holiday season.

Bonsall Unified Community Engagement Initiative seeks partners to continue family outreach programs
Bonsall Unified’s Community Engagement Initiative Seeks Partners to Continue Family Outreach Programs
Bonsall Unified School District’s Community Engagement Initiative (CEI) is a district team focused on strengthening collaboration, communication, and inclusion among students, families, and schools through structured outreach and support programs.
The CEI team includes Sullivan Middle School Assistant Principal Tiffany Suetos, teachers Carolina Carcamo and Scott Rodarte, paraprofessionals Erika Diaz and Krystal Diaz, Bonsall High School students Evan Pepper, Kaylee Pepper, and Daniela Berrios-Ramirez, and community members John Pepper and Carla Ramirez. Together, they help coordinate the district’s English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC), District English Learner Advisory Committee (DLAC), Native Learner Advisory Committee (NLAC) meetings, organize Family Literacy Nights, offer business etiquette and English support classes for multilingual parents, provides hotspots for families in need of internet, supports cultural events at all sites, and connect families with donated resources when needs arise.
The team is led by bilingual community liaison Leonor Rodriguez, now in her fifth year with Bonsall Unified. Rodriguez was born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico, and later moved to the United States, where she learned English as an adult. She is one of nine siblings in a family story she describes as “the American dream,” with several siblings working in education, law, and other professional fields. A Bonsall resident, Rodriguez is the wife of a retired Marine and the mother of two daughters. Her personal and professional background inform her work supporting multilingual families and facilitating connections between home, school, and community.
With the current grant funding cycle for the Community Engagement Initiative nearing its end, Bonsall Unified School District is inviting local businesses, organizations, and individuals to partner with the district to help sustain CEI programs. Community support would help maintain Family Literacy Nights, parent education opportunities, and outreach services for families.
The next Family Literacy Night, themed “ALL About STEM!”, is scheduled for Thursday, January 22, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. at the Bonsall Community Center. The event will feature interactive activities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics for students and their families. All families are welcome to attend!
For more information about the Community Engagement Initiative or partnership opportunities, contact Leonor Rodriguez at leonor.rodriguez@bonsallusd.com or 760.631.5200.
