Mr. Mauck's Musings
Good luck to the boys tennis team as they compete against Bloomington South with a trip to the State Finals on the line. Come out and cheer them on at the Ed Yarbrough Tennis Complex Saturday at 11. The Marching Wildcats will be competing in the Regional competition on Saturday at Evansville North. Good luck to all our students. We had a successful testing day on Wednesday. All of the Freshmen attended the Tour of Opportunity, where they were able to tour facilities associated with their desired career interests. All the Sophomores took the PSAT test. We had over 120 Juniors and Seniors elect to take the SAT. Many of the sophomores, juniors, and seniors attended a college visit, job shadow or participated in a community service project all day or after their testing. This day was a big step towards helping students make decisions about their life after high school. Congratulations to Camdyn Leuken and Deivimar Torin on being selected as this week's student and staff of the week representatives.
School Announcements:
Today is the last day of the first quarter of school. Please check PowerSchool over then next few days and check on your student's grades. The athletic department will be running eligibility reports on October 14th. Jasper High School runs on a semester grading system so no grades are final until January. Prom fundraiser chicken dinners can be picked up on Sunday from 11-1 at door #6 on the South side of campus. We had school picture retakes on Thursday and the updated order forms will be available on Monday. USI has provided us with information and registration links to there Business and Medical Day Showcases. Interested students may use the link to complete the registration. The cornerstone of a successful Democracy is participation by its citizens. Early voting is now available leading up to Election Day on November 3rd. We have included information about early voting locations and times. Participation in our elections is a civic duty and we encourage all eligible voters cast their votes. GJCS schools will observe Fall Break the week of October 19-23rd and school will not be in session.
Student Activities:
The JHS Class Officers have the October bulletin boards ready for judging. Vote for your favorite theme and earn your class some spirit points. The football team plays Evansville North at 7:30 tonight. Dubois County Cares is hosting a tailgate before the game at the SWICACC facility on 5th Street. Your SIAC Champion Volleyball team is competing in the Silver Creek Tournament at 9 on Saturday. The SIAC Cross Country tournament will be hosted at the Jasper Sports Complex at 10:30 on Saturday. Good luck to all of our runners. We have also brought back our support of student run businesses. If you are looking for a mobile car detailing business check out the flyer below.
FAFSA Graduation Requirement:
The State of Indiana has mandated FAFSA completion as a graduation requirement for all seniors. The law requires students and families complete the FAFSA or return the waiver form to the student's high school. For most colleges the early application period ends in early November, so we recommend an early completion of the FAFSA. The Student Academic Services Department has provided the following resources:
FAFSA Guide — step-by-step guidance, deadlines, and FAQs30 Facts About the FAFSA for Parents — common FAFSA questions and helpful tips for families
What Is Need-Based Financial Aid? — an overview of how need-based aid works

BOOK BANTER
Halloween month continues!!!! The window table is filled with thriller and horror books….stop by and get a new book!
We are celebrating Mrs. Keusch and the “Shakespeare Insults” project in our spotlight window. Some fantastic work here!!
Six of Crows is a fantasy novel written by the American author Leigh Bardugo and published by Henry Holt and Co. in 2015. The story follows a thieving crew led by criminal mastermind Kaz Brekker, who plots to break into a high-security prison. The novel is primarily set in the city of Ketterdam, which is loosely inspired by Dutch Republic–era Amsterdam. The plot is told from third-person viewpoints of five (seven if the opening and closing chapters are considered) different characters.
The novel is the first of a duology, completed in Crooked Kingdom (2016). An additional novella named Six of Crows: A Darker Shore, set after the duology, was published in June 2026. The series is part of Bardugo's Grishaverse. Main character Nina Zenik's storyline continues in the King of Scars duology: King of Scars (2019) and Rule of Wolves (2021), with the other Crows making brief cameos in the latter. They are also featured in the Netflix television series Shadow and Bone (2021–2023), the series' first season giving them an original storyline, including time with characters from Shadow and Bone like Nikolai Lantsov and Genya Safin. Wildcat Corner
Jasper High School is fortunate to have a school-based enterprise (SBE), our school store. SBEs are managed and operated by students as hands-on learning laboratories that integrate standards in marketing, finance, hospitality, human resources, and management. SBEs provide realistic and practical learning experiences that reinforce classroom instruction. The Wildcat Corner is a major learning component in the Business Program. The teacher and coordinator for this program is Mrs. Jessica Mehringer.
The success of the Wildcat Corner depends on the commitment of students in the Small Business and Business Administration Capstone classes as these students are responsible for working in the school store as part of their work based learning experience.
