Praise and Prayer are needed for Emily Crews and her mother. She has done very well in her treatment of her first cancer and is released from treatment!! Prayers are needed for an unrelated cancer found in her neck. Surgery is scheduled for next Tuesday.

Another praise for Emily Crews! She just found out she will be a grandmother! Her step-daughter will be expecting in the end of July.

Prayers are requested for Marie Bolen's father. He has been diagnosed with lung cancer. The Bolen girls are aware that his lungs are "sick" but do not know details other than that.

Mentor Program - As we discussed in the fall, we are excited to begin our WKE mentor program here this spring. We appreciate you informing us of students you feel may need an extra support system here at school, who otherwise do not have an advocate. We have put together a list of mentor teams to work together to support student success and seeking the best interest of the student at all times. We will roll this out at a collaborative conversation in January and move forward from there!

"Every child deserves a champion- an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection, and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be."

New After School Program - Our district social worker, Alma Puente Ruiz, recently was awarded a grant for an after school tutoring program. We are fortunate to be the site she selected to host this program. We will be asking to use classrooms for tutoring, more to come on the logistics of this. We are in need of one instructional assistant who would like to work with this program Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:15 - 3:30, at the rate of $15.00 an hour. Please let Ms. Mitchell know if you are interested.

Please Welcome - Wanda Veal is a new member to our WKE family as part of our custodial team. She will be working on the 600 hall as well as other duties.

Please Welcome - Savannah Harris is joining our WKE family in January. She will be a member of the second grade team. She is a recent graduate from CIU. We are excited to have her!

Please Welcome - We are fortunate to have Dianne Steelman join our family Monday through Thursday. She will be working with math RTI tier students. If your class is impacted by this schedule you would already be informed. She begins seeing students Tuesday, January 14th. In some cases she will be pulling students out and in other cases she will be pushing in. We will share her email as soon as possible so that you can communicate with her what you would like her to work on with your students.

Father Daughter Dance - Please let us know who from each team will be attending/helping with the Father Daughter Dance. Thank you

Google Training: GRADES 3,4 & 5 - We have confirmed the dates for our initial Google training: Thursday, January 16th during your planning period with follow-up discussions after school. This was the only time that could be worked out. Our focus will be Google Docs for Collaboration and Google Classroom for Workflow. Please save those dates on your calendar. All teachers in the above grades are expected to attend the training.

Math

I want to thank those of you who have started taking a look at our options for the math textbook adoption. As of Thursday, there are 5 titles (ORIGO just arrived) in Room 506 to look through. Don't forget to check out Bridges online. Remember the deadline to complete the initial review is January 27. I will keep you posted as additional titles arrive. We should be getting 2-3 more titles soon. Just so you know, Room 506 will be in use Monday and Tuesday during Kate Bishops visit. Please let me know how I can best help you and your team through this review process.

Literacy Corner

We are looking forward to a great week of learning with Kate Bishop on Monday and Tuesday. For quick access, here is the schedule.

As you think of titles you might need for your classroom library, you may want to check out this doc for some great series- organized by level bands. There are some fresh new faces and a diverse representation of main characters. Most of these titles can be purchased from Booksource. so you can add them to your classroom library shopping list. For those of you who chose to have Booksource compile your list, I'll be in touch soon to get started. It's an exciting time for Reading at The Knoll!
