Celebrating Black History Month Celebrating Black History Month

Principal Corner

This month honors African American people's rich range of experiences, struggles, and achievements throughout history and into the modern day. Black history is important because black history is American history. Inspiring Quotes for Black History Month:

  • "We should emphasize not Negro History, but the Negro in history. What we need is not a history of selected races or nations, but the history of the world void of national bias, race hate, and religious prejudice." - Carter Woodson, 1926, historian.

  • "Never be limited by other people's limited imaginations." —Dr. Mae Jemison, the first African-American female astronaut.

  • "Defining myself, as opposed to being defined by others, is one of the most difficult challenges I face." - Carol Moseley-Braun, politician and lawyer.

  • "Laundry is the only thing that should be separated by color." - Author Unknown.

  • "In all things that are purely social, we can be as separate as the fingers, yet one as the hand in all things essential to mutual progress." - Booker T. Washington, author and politician.

  • "He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life." -Muhammad Ali.

  • "We may encounter many defeats, but we must not be defeated." - Maya Angelou.

Remember this Friday, February 17, is a Required Workday for teachers, a non-school day for students, and a day for Parent/Teacher Conferences. Don't hesitate to contact your child's teacher if you still need to schedule a meeting to discuss how your child is doing thus far. If you have concerns or questions beyond a 30-minute conference, please talk to your child's teacher about a follow-up conference. At Parent/Teacher conferences, teachers will discuss literacy and math assessment results, specific interventions your child may be receiving, Read to Achieve information (3rd grade only), and how your child is doing overall during the first semester of school.

Please be sure to send a note to school documenting your student's absences each time they are out sick. If you have doctor's notes you will want to attach these. You may also email our Student Data Manager at kathy.ornato@acsgmail.net so that she can accurately code the absences.

I invite you to visit our school's website and Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/irabjones/ and follow us on Twitter @Principal_IBJ and Instagram @IraB.JonesElementary. These will serve as a resource tool for all upcoming events, the student/family handbook, and important reminders, and you can catch up with all the wonderful things our students and teachers are doing.

As a school leader and a parent, I understand the necessity of healthy communication between families and the school. I welcome your questions, celebrations, or concerns at any time. You can reach me by calling the school at 828.350.6700 or emailing me at ruafika.cobb@acsgmail.net.

We Need Your Help!

Please put your student's first and last name on items coming to school that could easily be misplaced, such as water bottles, gloves, sweatshirts, and coats. Not only will putting names on items prevent confusion, but it also means that when misplaced items are found, we can deliver them to the right student rather than adding them to the ever-expanding lost and found. Speaking of lost and found, if your student has lost an item lately, please encourage them to look in that area or stop by after school to look for yourself.

2022-2023 ACS Calendar

Nationally, February is Love the Bus month, aimed to raise awareness and appreciation for the safe experience of riding the bus to and from school. The Week of February 13 is Bus Driver Appreciation Week. In honor of our bus drivers' invaluable contributions to public education and student safety, we plan to celebrate and show them our appreciation and gratitude; we encourage families and students to do the same! This Black History Month resource is from the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library. It is an amazing collection of documents telling the timeline of the Civil Rights Movement specifically 1939-1965. Great for older kids, but still a lot of content for all Jones ambassadors!
