BRHS Financial Aid Information Night
BRHS is excited to be hosting our annual Financial Aid Information Nights on Wednesday, December 6th and Wednesday, January 17th from 6:00 - 7:00 pm. Students and parents are encouraged to attend to learn about FAFSA and about navigating the financial aid process for college. There will be information about scholarships, grants, student loans, and some general college information as well. The FAFSA process has been updated this year, so we hope that everyone can make it to one of the sessions. Please remember, that completion of a FAFSA, TASFA, or an opt-out form is a graduation requirement per Texas Education Agency guidelines.
BRHS Robotics Has Success
The Robotics team's hard work has defined a successful season, earning accolades such as the Judges' Award and securing a spot in the Wildcard round through their exceptional Engineer Notebook. Additionally, the addition of five middle school members enhanced the team, contributing by coding games for our booth and introducing a new driver. Notably, each team leader significantly boosted their team's performance during competitions.
Kelsey Combs spearheaded the Engineering Notebook, ensuring its completion with meticulous attention to detail. Despite personal challenges, Kelsey's unwavering commitment and focus significantly contributed to the team's progress. Jack Jones elevated the team's CAD modeling skills by mastering Fusion 360, impressing judges with the model's quality and professionalism. Jack's leadership will also guide the team towards earning Fusion 360 certifications, enhancing their industrial-level modeling skills. Paige Gelvin led the marketing team, collaborating with Mrs. Hamilton's Entrepreneurship class, resulting in a significant increase in the overall team score.
Under the leadership of Ace Farr and Edgar Orduna, the team experienced continuous progress throughout the season, meeting deadlines, mastering skills, and developing a versatile robot capable of scoring in multiple aspects of the game. Notably, team problem-solving during competitions was entirely student-led, showcasing the team's dedication and expertise.
Capturing Kids' Hearts December Focus: Responsibility
As you probably know, BRISD is a Capturing Kids' Hearts (CKH) school district. As a part of our efforts to help our students learn about and exhibit certain character traits, we will be focusing on a specific trait each month. We will also be sharing a newsletter with you so that you will know what your student is learning about.
This month, we’re challenging your students to reflect on their experiences and take responsibility for how they choose to learn and grow from these experiences. We are partnering with you to grow and develop your child’s sense of responsibility. As you reflect as a family, celebrate your accomplishments, identify areas you may want to improve, and consider new ways to serve others in the days ahead.
Join us in the BRHS Black Box Theater as we present "The Bold, The Young, and The Murdered" December 14-16 at 7:30pm. See the flyer for more details.

Approval by the College Board’s Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) is required before students can take the SAT, SAT Subject Tests, PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, or AP Exams with accommodations. School 504's and student IEP's do not transfer over to College Board testing automatically and documentation must be collected for students to receive their accommodations.
Please fill out the attached form and send to Mrs. Ingersoll for processing. College Board approval can take up to 8 weeks, so please return ASAP if this pertains to your child.

Federal student aid from the U.S. Department of Education (ED) is money to help you pay your education expenses at a college, career school, university, or graduate school. The quickest way to apply for federal student aid is online at studentaid.gov, where you will find the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA
Tip: Before starting to fill out your FAFSA, make sure to create your FSA ID—a username and password that is used to access ED’s websites. Your FSA ID is used to confirm your identity and electronically sign your federal student aid documents, including the FAFSA.

Spanish
Students in Ms. Morales' Spanish classes had the opportunity to experience Dia de los Muertos in an authentic way. Ms. Morales even modeled some traditional face painting for the students.

How can parents talk to their kids about vaping
As the use of vapes/e-cigarettes becomes more prevalent in society, kids may be tempted to try them out or give in to peer pressure. Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine. Nicotine is highly addictive and can harm adolescent brain development, which continues into the early to mid-20s. E-cigarettes can contain other harmful substances besides nicotine. Talking to your kids about vaping can be difficult but here is a link that can guide you.

Are energy drinks safe for adolescents?
Energy drinks do not provide sustained energy and have a higher likelihood of a “crash-and-burn” effect. Caffeine excretes water from the body to dilute the sugar entering the bloodstream which can lead to dehydration. The current recommendation for adolescents ages 12-18 is to consume less than 100 mg of caffeine per day, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Energy drinks can contain 100-200 mg of caffeine per serving. Consuming high amounts of caffeine can be risky for adolescents. Some side effects can include:
· Dehydration (not enough water in your body).
· Heart complications (such as irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure and heart failure).
· Anxiety (feeling nervous and jittery).
· Insomnia (unable to sleep).
Boosting your energy without energy drinks:
· Eat well
· Get plenty of sleep
· Drink water to stay hydrated
· Work out or move around when tired
· Cut back on caffeine slowly
Sick students
Please keep all sick children home from school- this includes fever greater than 100 degrees, vomiting or diarrhea in the last 24 hours. If you are unsure, please call your healthcare provider or school nurse for advice.
