We are Emerson Elementary
October 2025
Hello Emerson Elementary Families!
As the first quarter of the school year comes to a close, I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude for your continued support and partnership and wish all of you a safe and restful fall break (Oct. 16 - 20th). During these past few months, our students have been working diligently and making great strides in their academic growth. I'm always impressed by their enthusiasm, curiosity, and dedication to learning.
Our focus for the month is “Rooted in Kindness and Respect,” and our Character Trait of the Month is Empathy. Empathy fosters an understanding of others' feelings and promotes a respectful, caring classroom community.
Here are 5 simple ways you can encourage empathy at home:
-
Model Empathy - Children learn by observing. Show empathy in your daily interactions with your children, your partner, and others in your community.
-
Practice Active Listening - Give family members your full, undivided attention when they are speaking to teach them about good communication and show them they are valued.
-
Encourage Perspective-taking - Ask questions like, "How do you think your friend felt when that happened?" to encourage them to consider others' feelings.
-
Teach Emotional Vocabulary - Help children identify and label their own emotions by using an "I feel..." statement, such as "I feel frustrated when...".
-
Promote Acts of Kindness and Service - Encourage your children to help others, whether it's by doing a chore for a neighbor, making a card for someone who is sick, or volunteering as a family.
Thank you for partnering with us in your child’s learning journey. Together, we’re helping our students build strong minds and bright futures!

Monthly Character Trait
Elementary students can show empathy by active listening, observing body language, role-playing, performing acts of kindness, and asking genuine questions about how others feel. They can also learn empathy by reflecting on their own feelings and those of others, standing up for someone who is being treated unfairly, or helping with simple tasks to support a classmate.
In Social Interactions
Listen to understand:
When a classmate is speaking, give them your full attention, make appropriate eye contact, and focus on what they are saying.
Ask how others feel:
Directly ask a classmate what's wrong or how they are feeling to show you are curious and care about their experience.
Observe and acknowledge feelings:
Pay attention to a person's facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice to understand how they might be feeling.
Offer support:
Acknowledge a classmate's feelings by saying something like, "It sounds like you're feeling sad," and then offer help, such as giving a hug or a kind word.
Be inclusive:
Invite a new classmate to play or join an activity to help them feel more comfortable and included.
Through Activities
Play pretend:
Engage in role-playing or pretend play to experience the world from another person's viewpoint.
Practice kindness:
Do a random act of kindness for a classmate, like writing a thank you note or helping with a project, then reflect on how it felt to help someone else.
Get involved in charity:
Volunteer for a good cause or learn about a charity to understand different needs and how to help those in their community.
Use emotion games:
Play games like "emotion charades" or "Inside Out" character matching to learn how to identify and express different feelings.
By Developing Self-Awareness
Reflect on feelings:
Think about times you felt sad, happy, or frustrated, and then try to imagine how someone else might feel in a similar situation.
Think before acting:
Consider how your words and actions might affect someone else before you say or do something.
September Student Celebration
What a pleasure it is to celebrate our students and the great work they are already doing. We celebrated our students who exemplified the character trait of curiosity, perfect attendance for the month of September, birthdays, and individual grade certificates.
