The FACE Forum
May 2025
It’s hard to believe that May is already here! We know this is a busy month as you get ready to wrap up the school year, host various end of year staff, family and community events, and still try to keep it all together for the final six weeks! We also know it hasn't been an easy school year and our FACE team is so thankful for all you and your teams have been doing all year long to support students, families and school communities! As you take time this month to appreciate your school and department teams, please know how much we appreciate YOU!
Inside this month's FACE Forum newsletter, you'll find information on May workshops for families and staff, upcoming events, food distributions, community resources for families, morale boosters, partnership highlights, and more! While our FACE Forum monthly newsletter is an internal newsletter intended to only be shared with district staff, you are welcome to take any applicable parts of the newsletter that may support families and add to your own site/classroom newsletters and family messaging.
Thank you for ALL you do! We are grateful for each of you and wish you a wonderful May ahead!

Participants will read Whitaker’s and Fiore’s book, "Dealing with Difficult Parents"-- a practical resource for educators that provides insights into transferable ways to effectively communicate and best collaborate with all parents, helping build important trust and partnership.
Communicating with parents is one of the most challenging and potentially stressful tasks that teachers face on a daily basis, but also one of the most important tasks. Whether trying to resolve a heated argument or delivering bad news, it is essential to know how to handle difficult situations and establish positive relationships with your students’ parents. In this updated second edition of the bestselling Dealing with Difficult Parents, award-winning educators Todd Whitaker and Douglas J. Fiore help you develop a repertoire of tools and skills for comfortable and effective interaction with parents.
The book’s features include:
- Tools to help you understand parents’ motivations and how to work with them rather than against them;
- Detailed scripts for dealing with even the most stubborn and volatile parents;
- New strategies for increasing parent involvement to foster student success;
- An all-new chapter on the role that social media can play in interacting with parents; and
- A new chapter on initiating contact with parents to build positive credibility.
This must-read book will equip you with the skills you need to expertly navigate even the most challenging encounters with parents, and walk away feeling that you have made a positive and meaningful impact.

We'll be adding to this library regularly, so keep checking to see what's new! The link allows anyone in San Juan to view the resources, so please feel free to share the link with your site/ department team members!
Human Trafficking Resources for Families
The city of Sacramento has one of the highest rates of human trafficking in the country. A 2022 report estimated more than 13,000 potential victims of human trafficking between 2015 and 2020. The numbers are exponentially growing since then, especially within our local district region. Human trafficking occurs every day on a national and global level. This crime impacts not only women and girls, but also men and boys. Many refer to human trafficking as “the crime that hides in plain sight.” Why? The signs are right in front of us, but many have not been trained to recognize them.
3Strands Global Foundation offers resources, education, and support, empowering communities to combat human trafficking and protect vulnerable individuals. Thanks to a generous grant 3Strands Global Foundation received from our incredible community partners at the Rotary Club of Point West-Sacramento, our San Juan Unified students, families, staff and community now have free resources available to learn about human trafficking and important ways to help prevent it.
The flyer below can be shared with families (translated fliers will be uploaded on the FACE intranet page as we receive them back).
Stay tuned for an optional virtual, self-paced staff education course that will be available soon and professional learning hours will be awarded for completion. More information will be communicated in Behind the Scenes and Leadership Reflections.
For more information, please contact Amy Rovai Gregory (arovai@sanjuan.edu).
California Community Resource Guide Now Available!
The new California Community Resource Guide has been added to the FACE intranet page. It's a terrific resource to share with families who may be in need of employment, healthcare, housing, transportation, food access, mental health support, or financial assistance.
The César Chávez Youth Leadership Conference and Celebration is a free college and career motivational event for junior high, high school and community college students, as well as parents and community members. Taking place on May 10 from 8:00 am-3:00 pm, the goal of this annual conference is to introduce the value of attending college - particularly to individuals who may not be considering higher education due to lack of information or financial resources.
Each year, the conference delivers an engaging program that:
- Nurtures the concept that all individuals are leaders;
- Provides information on the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) admission requirements;
- Provides information on the California Community College (CCC) matriculation and enrollment process; and
- Introduces college success resources and career workforce opportunities in STEM in the public and the private sector.
This free conference averages over 1800 attendees each year, from predominantly low-income and underrepresented backgrounds. Attendees leave empowered, believing they can achieve their goals and knowing the resources available to them to do so.
To learn more and register for free, visit https://diversity.ucdavis.edu/ccylc
Did you know that EVERY student in San Juan Unified can use their student ID number as a Student Success Card to access Sacramento Public Library's digital collection of resources for free?! Check out the flyer below and please share with your families and staff!
It's a Great Time to Show Your Volunteers Some Appreciation!
Let’s take a moment to show our incredible volunteers how much they mean to our school community! Volunteers play a vital role in creating a positive, enriching environment for our students, and their time, energy, and dedication deserve to be recognized. Whether it’s through a small thank-you note, a special event, or simply acknowledging their efforts, showing appreciation can make a world of difference.
The FACE department has some volunteer appreciation key chains! If you’d like some, please email volunteer@sanjuan.edu with the quantity and where they should be sent. These will be sent via district mail, so please also include who they should be addressed to.
