Superintendent's Community Update December 13, 2023

A Message from Superintendent Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.

Dear Newport Schools Parents, Families, and Staff:

The holiday season is all about giving. I can 100% confidently say that the best gift we can give our children is the gift of an education. The ability to read, write, problem solve, and explore the incredible world of knowledge and experience that’s out there. That’s our job as educators, to give our students the lifelong gift of a quality education.

To give that gift, we need our students in the classroom every day of the school year so our teachers are able to do their jobs- grow our students with knowledge, skill, and power for the future. As I’ve said many times, Attendance Matters, Every Day! That includes these last two weeks before the start of our holiday break on Friday, December 22nd. It is important that as adults we hold fast and firm that all our children attend school every day. Just because a vacation is coming, it does not mean we should allow students to have an early start. Let’s stay focused on a good daily routine, attending school every day remaining in 2023, and reminding our students that it takes commitment to be successful- and that means going to school every day.

And speaking of commitment and hard work, the Rhode Island Department of Education’s chronic absenteeism tracker shows that all of our schools - Pell, Thompson, and Rogers – are all about 10 percent better in terms of chronic absenteeism than at this point last school year. That’s progress worth celebrating. But with more than 20% of our students still on track to be chronically absent, we have to do better! That means continuing to come together as a One Newport community to support our students and reinforce just how critical attendance is to success in school and life.

The holidays are in full swing here in Newport, and as you can see in the items below our Newport Public School students are participating in holiday concerts and plays. What a wonderful way to show off learning while also spreading some holiday cheer! It also shows that being in school, committing to our learning activities in the academics as well as our arts and clubs enables all our students to shine!

Have a great week of learning everyone!

Sincerely,

Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.

Atentamente,

Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.
