From Doan's Desk...
If you were not aware, there are the beginnings of work on a Colorado bill that aims to limit cell phones in schools. There is no telling whether or not a resolution would pass, but it is a topic of discussion across the state of Colorado. The bill would require school boards to adopt a policy that limits cell phone use in schools by July 2026.
We are one month into our efforts to support “Distraction Free BVSD” cell phone policies. Our goal to this point has been to reinforce, remind, and promote to students that their phones are to remain away for the entire school day.
Starting February 3rd, we begin our campus-wide enforcement of consequences for using phones outside the classroom. Administration and campus security will follow the same discipline matrix that was already being used by classroom teachers in the application of policies to all campus spaces throughout the school day.
1st offense: The student’s phone will be confiscated, returned at the end of day.
2nd offense: The student’s phone will be confiscated, returned to a parent at 3:55pm.
3rd offense: The student’s phone will be confiscated, meeting with the parent.
4th offense: Cell phone not allowed on school property, defiance consequences.
We hope that we can continue working on this policy with the mindset that it is something that we can build upon for its positive attributes. The focus is on creating a distraction-free learning environment where academic performance and emotional well-being are all improved.
