English and Language Arts with Mr. Winston

Next week, scholars will complete several important assignments as we wrap up Unit 3. Students will revise and submit the final version of their The Giver Narrative Writing assignment, which will be typed and submitted through Class Notebook. As a reminder, this assignment will be graded as a Summative Assessment in Aspen.

In addition, students will complete Unit 3 Skills Assessment #2, which includes a multiple-choice section (Form A) and a written response section (Summative A).

To help prepare for the assessment, we will also begin diving deeper into poetry analysis by reading and discussing the poem “At a Window.” Students will practice analyzing how poets use language, imagery, and structure to communicate ideas. This work will prepare scholars for the written portion of the Unit Skills Assessment, which will ask them to analyze a poem using textual evidence and clear reasoning.

As always, please encourage your scholars to read for 20 minutes each night and to send me a message on Canvas if they have any questions.

Math with Mx. Gomez

We had a lovely Pi day! Thank you for the donations! It was great to see students learn about and understand the concept of Pi and how it’s related to circles.

6th Grade Accelerated Math

Students will have a Form B(Investigation) on Monday before we transition into Unit 1 which covers Area, Volume of cubes and prisms. Students will then have a practice day over the skills they’ve learned at the beginning of the week and round out the week with a Form A.

7th Grade Math

On Monday, students will have their final review day for the RCT! Students received a Study Guide which we reviewed in class on Wednesday. Students also received a Pear with more practice that gives multiple opportunities for students to practice their skills with equations and inequalities. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we will take RCT #5. On Thursday we will be moving on to learning about distance before we transition into Unit 7 over Angles, Triangles, and Prisms.

Please encourage your child to stay on top of their assignments and reach out if they need support.

World Geography and Cultures with Ms. Wesselhoft

Next week, students will take part in a virtual field trip with the National Portrait Gallery to help launch our upcoming Global Citizenship summative task. During the visit, students will explore how portraits can tell powerful stories about individuals who have made an impact on their communities and the world. This experience will help inspire ideas for their Global Citizenship Portrait Project.

Students will also take their unit quiz and then begin investigating the cultures of the Americas. Through their cultural exploration, students will build background knowledge that will support them as they choose and research a global citizen to feature in their portrait project.

Here is the new wishlist link if you would like to donate to the Geography classroom.

Earth and Space Science with Ms. Sagan

Hello scientists!

This week, students showed their knowledge of our Oceans, Atmosphere, and Climate unit with their Amplify Post Test AND showed their mastery of the 30 roots they learned for the 3rd quarter. Excellent work!

Next week, students will begin their 6th unit - Weather + Water. This unit deals with the water cycle, reading weather maps, predicting weather, and discussing natural disasters. Next week’s primary focus will be on heat transfer, phases of matter, and the water cycle, and close out with an exit ticket on the Water Cycle.

There are no more roots for this quarter – well done everyone!

Notes from MLL Support

Last week we switched to a new focus in preparation of DC CAPE – iReady three times a week and HMH two times a week. Students are encouraged to complete iReady lessons as much as they can to better prepare for CAPE. Students will earn incentives when passing an iReady lesson with a 85% or above.
