Library Books Return Contest!

All PS8 library books must be returned by Friday 6/12!! Please finish reading your books now and bring them back this week.

The grade having the fewest books left to return by the end of the week will win the Book Return Contest. The winning grade will win an extra recess and a prize! Check the front hallway daily for updates on progress by grade.

To keep the library healthy for next year, all missing books must be replaced by the borrower. Any damaged, missing, or lost books should be replaced with a hardcover version, or you can send a $10 replacement fee to the library. If the book is located by the end of the school year, the fee will be returned. Please feel free to contact Mrs. Oden as needed (joden@schools.nyc.gov).

Chromebooks and iPads - Return

Chromebooks and iPads need to be returned before the end of the school year if your child is not returning to PS 8 in September or is not continuing to a NYCPS middle school. Devices should be returned to Eileen or to classroom teachers.

DJ Marc Bars LIVE at Celebrate Brooklyn (6/13)

We’re excited to share that on Saturday, June 13, at 3pm, DJ Marc Bars (our MC and DJ for school events, as well as a Kids Cre8 teacher) will be taking the stage at Celebrate Brooklyn for what he expects to be the biggest multigenerational family dance party Brooklyn has ever seen! He will be bringing along a select few P.S. 8 students to perform two songs live on stage!

Marc wanted to personally invite the entire school community on 6/12 at 3pm to come out to the Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park to dance, celebrate together, and support our PS. 8 students who are performing on stage. Throw on your dancing shoes and join us for what’s shaping up to be one of the highlights of the summer. 💃🕺

"Phones Down" Picnic! (6/14)

A Phones Down Picnic will be held on the Dwight Street lawn at Coffey Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday June 14th. This event embodies the spirit of SenatorAndrew Gounardes' legislation and advocacy on responsible technology use. This public picnic invites Brooklynites to enjoy quality time outside—creating, playing, and collectively putting phones down to be present with one another and nature. The Red Hook Art Project will lead a mural and an affirmation card decorating session, and they have made special pouches to hold your phones. Pioneer Works will lead a flower pressing activity. Both Dodge and the Armory YMCA will bring an obstacle course and lead field day games for kids. The Girl Scouts of Greater NY will lead a bracelet making station, and have goodie bags for prospective girl scouts. Giveaways include fresh fruit from GrowNYC and books for all ages from the Brooklyn Book Bodega. Please RSVP HERE or by using the QR code on the photo at right. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to call 718-238-6044 or email lando@nysenate.gov or gounardes@nysenate.gov.

Frequently Asked Questions & Common Situations Frequently Asked Questions & Common Situations

Absences

Please let your child's teacher know that your child is absent. Also email Keisha Worrell (nworrell2@schools.nyc.gov) if your child is absent because of an illness. If your child has an appointment with a physician, another school, etc, ask for a letter stating why the child is absent. Be sure to share that letter with Keisha. This will still be considered an absence but will be coded to explain the absence. Students should aim to miss no more than 10 days of school during the year. If your child will miss school because of travel, please share travel information with Keisha as well. She is tasked with documenting where a child is if not at PS 8.

Family Income Inquiry Form

Lunch and Breakfast are free for all students. However, funding for PS 8 is partially determined by families’ completion of Family Income Inquiry Form. You can decline to share income. Simply completing the form helps PS 8. You do not need to list your child's ID (OSIS) number to complete. We expect 100% completion for PS 8.

Lost and Found

The lost and found is located inside the main entrance at 37 Hicks Street. The PS 8 PTA also leaves merchandise in bags on the top shelf of the lost and found; no need to check in with Eileen if you have ordered anything from the PS 8 shop. Please label your child's lunchbox, water bottle, clothing.

School Bus

There is a stop-to-school bus available for students in grades K-2 who live at least 0.5 miles from school. The bus picks up at the corner of Joralemon and Hicks at 8:12 AM. The bus leaves PS 8 around 2:45 PM. It is expected that children take the bus to and from school. If you think your child qualifies for the bus, please reach out to Keisha Worrell, our school secretary, at nworrell2@schools.nyc.gov. Only students who are formally on the Office of Pupil Transportation (OPT) bus list are able to ride on the bus.

Schoolyard Use After School

The PS 8 schoolyard is not a public playspace. After school, New York Edge and Kids' Orbit students and staff should be the sole users of the schoolyard. Please share this information with any sitter or other care takers. Legally, only the afterschool programs have the right to use the spaces and play structure of the front and rear schoolyards.

Students Who Need Medication At School

Medication Administration Forms (MAF) for the 25-26 School Year are available now. Please have the forms completed by your child’s physician in time for the new school year. Make sure you sign the second page of the MAF. Submit the forms to our school nurse once the school year begins. Do not send in medications until the nurse lets you know that the MAF is approved. All medications must be in their original packaging, unopened and with a pharmacy label.

Transcript Requests

Please email Lauren Coe for 5th grade requests and Keisha Worrell for Kindergarten to 4th grade requests. Transcripts will be completed based on the order the email requests are made. If you want to know if the transcripts were sent, please contact the receiving school. Also, allow teachers 2 weeks notice for all receiving school documentation.
