Nonnewaug High School Parent News
August 31st, 2026 to September 4th, 2026
Hello Nonnewaug families,
We are elated to welcome our new students and families to Nonnewaug. We are excited to get the year going and to make Nonnewaug even better than it was last year. Our students and staff certainly accomplished a tremendous amount during the 2025-2026 school year.
Students have had a very successful transition from the summer slumber into the first few days of school. Counseling met with over 100 students on the first day to make sure that student needs were met. Teachers are focused on setting routines and providing a rigorous curriculum. Many of our students and parents have figured out our pick-up and drop-off routines. We appreciate all of your efforts and want to work in a collaborative manner with you to make sure that your students have the best year possible. Attendance, academic performance, building relationships and rigor will be the anchor priorities for us as we create a community of learners at Nonnewaug.
The culmination of the NHS Shared Summer Read of The Boys in the Boat is this Thursday night's book discussion/movie night in the NHS auditorium at 6:30 pm. Join us as Kate Peterson shares her father’s crew experience, we discuss themes from the novel, and use our critical thinking skills to analyze the film. Doors open at 6 pm. Light refreshments will be available for purchase. Extra credit is available to students who participate in this event or have participated in any other events this summer. See your English teacher for further information.
Please see our 2026-2027 Scheduling Calendar so that you can track our weekly bell schedule. We have added the finals information there. Our bell schedules can be found here.
Sincerely,
Mykal Kuslis - Principal
Declan Curtin - Assistant Principal

Graphing Calculators: The recommended graphing calculator is the TI-84 Plus CE or the new TI-84 EVO. If you are unable to purchase a graphing calculator, NHS has a limited number available for students to loan for the school year. Please sign the yellow permission slip for a loaner graphing calculator provided by your student's math teacher. Any questions, please email Mrs. Belanger at sbelanger@ctreg14.org.
Parking on Campus- With the return of fall sports and other events at Nonnewaug, the Woodbury Fire Marshall would like to remind parents and spectators to only park in designated parking spaces. We have been informed that deputies of the fire department will be present at Nonnewaug events and will be ticketing individuals who are not in designated parking spots.
Attendance - Regular attendance at school is required by state law, and is an important component of student success. Please use this link as a general attendance overview. Class time is an invaluable opportunity for students and teachers to interact and exchange ideas. In order to receive maximum opportunities for learning, students need to be present in every class. Attendance is so important that it is one of the criteria for granting course credit. (course credit is granted on the basis of two criteria: passing grade and attendance in that specific class within the requirements of the school policy.) We appreciate your support in ensuring your child is in attendance daily.
We are excited to partner with Yale University again this year for their voluntary “Kick Nic” vaping reduction program. Please see the program information here and if you have any questions or would like to opt out, please see here.

Athletics/Clubs
I hope everyone is excited for the 2026-2027 school year. The fall season is here. This year we have a new system for sports registration called “Final Forms.” The new system allows families to register only once for the year rather than for each sports season. There are three objectives that need to be completed before your child can participate in Nonnewaug Athletics.
An updated physical uploaded to Final Forms. ALL PHYSICALS MUST BE UPLOADED TO FINAL FORMS! Emailed physicals and hard copies will not be accepted for athletics. Please use PDF formatting.
Parent/Guardian signature on Final Forms (parent login)
Student Athlete signature on Final Form (student login)
Please allow at least 48 business hours for files to be reviewed for approval. Here are some helpful links to help parents and athletes sign up for Final Forms. A few features include how to create an account and how to upload physicals and documents:
To find our athletics schedule for the upcoming fall season you can go to the CIAC website. The link is posted here.

Fan Attendance- Please remember that it is a privilege to watch our student-athletes compete. If a fan and/or parent gets removed from an athletic facility, they will have to sit out the next two home games. This is a Berkshire League rule for all teams. We have not had to remove any of our parents the past two years during our winter sports seasons. We thank you for your anticipated cooperation.
Nonnewaug will now be cashless for home game entries into our events. Nonnewaug will be using GoFan. GoFan is an online ticketing system. Fans will need to purchase a ticket online to enter football and basketball games. Entry fees are - $7 for adults and $4 for seniors/students. Juniors: Two more Common App & Naviance work sessions will be offered this week. Students can find the sign ups in their Class of 2027 Classroom.
Seniors: Make sure you obtain your college credits earned in high school! The CCRC does NOT have access to these so the responsibility falls on the student. Here’s how to obtain them:
ECE Credits - Students looking to apply their ECE credits from their high school courses to their chosen college will need to request (and pay for) their official transcripts be sent to their chosen college. Here is the link for UCONN.
AP Credits - Students looking to apply AP Credits to their chosen college need to request (and pay for) an official AP Score Report from the College Board be sent to their chosen college.

Updated Cell Phone Policy
Cell Phone Policy Changes
Each classroom is equipped with phone holders, placed in a secure location.
Upon entering the classroom, students are required to place their cell phones in the designated phone holder ONLY, and they should be set to silent. Students will be required to use the holder. The phone is to remain in the holder if the student is leaving the room (i.e. going to the bathroom) and returning. Attendance will be taken for each class by teachers checking phones in the phone holder. If a student does not put their phone in the phone holder, they will be marked absent.
In the case of an emergency, students can request permission from the teacher to access their phones discreetly.
Special accommodations, as determined through the PPT or 504 process, can be made for students with documented medical or accessibility needs. These cases should be discussed with the school administration.
Students are not allowed to use cell phones or any recording devices to take pictures of students and staff members without their knowledge and/or consent. Students are also prohibited from posting pictures or video of students and staff members on the Internet.
At the beginning of, and periodically throughout the academic year, the cell phone policy to include phone holder usage will be communicated to all students and parents/guardians.
Students are responsible for their own cell phones and should not handle other students’ devices.
Nonnewaug High School will take reasonable measures to ensure the security of the phone holders.
Any listening device including but not limited to air pods, earbuds, and headphones are a distraction to the educational process as well as a safety concern. These devices should not be used during any academic classroom time. During passing time and other non instructional periods (study hall, lunch), only 1 air pod can be in at a time.
