Parent- Child Interaction: Rhyming
SLP Explains Phonological Awareness and Rhyming
Rhymes and Songs
Fill the day with nursery rhymes. Sing them, recite them, and listen for them when out and about.
- Look for children's music and CDs of nursery rhymes and silly songs at the library.
- Read, read, and read. Many children's stories and poems are full of rhymes, alliterations (phrases containing words beginning with the same initial sound), and predictable rhythms
- Play word games that involve rhyming riddles or I Spy games. For example, "I spy with my little eye, something that rhymes with cook (book)." Or "I spy with my little eye, something that starts the same as dig (dad)."

Navigating Your Child's Temperament
Temperament
A child's temperament becomes apparent early in life and shapes her responses to the world around her.
The following three child temperament profiles are widely used:
- Easy: A temperamental profile marked by regularity, ease of approach to new things, adaptability to change, mild to moderate mood intensity and a generally positive mood. (This applied to about 40 percent of the children studied by Thomas and Chess.)
- Spirited (formerly "difficult"): A temperamental profile marked by impulsivity or unpredictability, resistance to sudden changes in routines, an underdeveloped ability to control emotions and behaviors and an intense mood. (This applied to about 10 percent of the children studied by Thomas and Cress.)
- Slow to warm: A temperamental profile marked by a tendency to withdraw from new people or situations, some difficulty adapting to change, mild mood intensity and shyness. (This applied to about 15 percent of the children studied by Thomas and Cress )
